As a child born and raised in Madison Valley, Laine Stilinski was used to dealing with weird and unexplained things. So when she walked out of her house to go to school and found herself standing on a different street, she didn’t panic. Instead, she calmly pulled out her phone and set about figuring out where she was. Or rather, when. 2017 was the year she was born, so her parents obviously weren’t looking for her yet. This had happened before, so she knew she just needed to go find one of them.
Since she was closer to her Dad’s house, she headed there and let herself in. Luckily, the locks were the same in her time and she spent equal amounts of time at this house and the Pack house. No one was awake yet, so she went to the kitchen, got herself a snack, and settled at the table with one of her notebooks and a pack of multi colored highlighters.
Laine was humming to herself and color coding something when she finally heard footsteps. “Morning, Daddy!” she said, looking up and greeting Stiles with a bright smile. “Can you pour me some milk? The jug was too heavy.”
***
Stiles walked into the counter when he saw Laine sitting at the table. Shock had made him cut the corner too fast so now he was rubbing his knee and trying not to swear while he got his wits together.
“Geez, morning Laine. Ow.” Oh man he really was going to die. Could there be any more reminders of he and Kate coming up? “Milk. Sure. Milk.” He looked in the cupboard first before shutting it and rubbing his face. “And we keep that where it’s cold.”
***
Laine giggled. “You need coffee,” she said. “Grandpa says I’m not allowed to touch the coffee pot so I can’t make it. I only broke it one time…” To be fair, she almost set the house on fire that time, but this version of her dad didn’t know that.
“Oh, and there’s no more pop-tarts,” she added.
***
“Okay breaking it once when everyone needs it to function is like a natural disaster Laine.” Stiles managed to get her milk and actually put the milk back in the fridge before starting on coffee. And for a moment kind of wished he had something to fortify the coffee with but there definitely wasn’t any in the house.
“We’ll go shopping. I mean we have to anyway for some clothes and stuff.” There was probably some around somewhere but he didn’t know where they’d kept the stuff from last time. “So...weird stuff again.”
***
“Uh huh. I’m already making lists!” she said, proudly holding up the color-coded sheet of paper in front of her so Stiles could see it. “I looked online and found out that this is the year I’m born.”
Laine had no idea that her innocent words were about to cause a massive panic attack. “I didn’t call Mommy yet. I was closer to this house so I came to see you first.”
***
Stiles had managed to start the coffee before she said that so he didn’t drop and break the pot or anything but he was glad he was looking away from Laine. There was a couple of panicked counting on his fingers before he felt like thumping his head on the door frame.
Nope. Just nope. Couldn’t be.
“Hey I’m going to call your mommy and let her know you’re here.” He pointed at the chair she was already sitting in. “Stay. I’ll be right back.”
***
Laine was happy to stay put for the moment now that she had milk so she simply nodded and picked up her cup to take a drink, being careful not to let any slosh over the sides. Done with her lists for now, she decided to draw some pictures for her grandfathers. They always loved her artwork.
***
Stiles stepped out the back door before pulling his phone out of his pocket and dialing Kate. He was tapping his fingers on his leg in agitation while waiting for her to pick up. “C’mon, C’mon...oh hey Kate you’re not pregnant are you?” He just sort of blurted that out as soon as he heard her voice then grimaced before sinking his hand in his face.
“Oh and good morning.”
***
Kate’s morning had been interesting already, with the arrival of two children for her and Nick this time around. They’d barely arrived at the big house hoping to con breakfast out of Clay when her phone rang and she groaned inwardly to see Stiles’ number on the display. She had a feeling she knew what this call was about.
Though she wasn’t expecting his question and fumbled her phone, nearly dropping it. He could probably hear a bit of a clatter on her end before she spoke. “No, I’m definitely not,” she said. “And I’m guessing I know why you’re asking. Is it Laine again?”
***
“Uh yeah.” Stiles cleared his throat and managed to lift his face out of his hand so he could be understood while trying to talk on the phone. “She up, well this is the year she was born so I might have panicked.”
Understatement.
“So she showed up here first this time. How many are showing up there?”
***
“Nick and I have two so far,” Kate said. She really wasn’t sure what to think about Laine being born this year. Maybe she could keep the girl away from Nick. They seemed to be back on an even keel after everything and the last thing she wanted was for something to change that. “Antonio’s back, but older this time and with a little sister in tow.”
Which meant Stiles wasn’t the one who was panicking yet. “We just got to the house, so I have no idea if anyone else has kids here.” It sounded like there was an awful lot of noise inside, but she couldn’t say for sure.”
***
“I’ll probably start calling around but apparently I need pop tarts and if I leave her alone with the coffee maker too long I’m afraid she’ll experiment.” Stiles really didn’t want to have this reminder out there for Nick that he’d way overstepped his bounds with Kate and so far Nick wasn’t choosing to beat him over it. Not that he didn’t want to have Laine around, she was kind of cool for a kid he didn’t know what to do with, it was just the circumstances.
“So I guess I’m going to the store.”
***
It was going to be an interesting few days, that was for sure. It always was when the kids hit town. “No others so far?” Kate asked. “I’m surprised. I seem to remember you being popular last time around.” Not as popular as Nick, but then again, no one was. She idly wondered if he was going to have others show up too.
Laine got bored coloring her pictures and decided to go find her father. She quietly stood behind him until she realized that he was on the phone with her mom. “HI MOM!” she shouted. “After Daddy takes me shopping, can we visit you?”
***
“No not yET…” Laine managed to shoot Stiles’ blood pressure up about 50 points and he dropped the phone when she did that. There was a reason his phone always had some sort of case on it. Kate got to hear the clatter and him saying ‘oh shit’ from what sounded like twenty feet away until he managed to fumble the phone back off the ground.
“Laine I think you started the gray hairs.” Stiles ducked his head down and pointed at his hair. “Is it all gray there? Am I starting to look like your granddad? Anyway, mine were all spread out last time so I’m not saying there won’t be more but just Laine right now.”
***
Kate couldn’t help but laugh when their daughter startled Stiles. She waited patiently for him to pick up the phone. “Well, why don’t you guys swing by after you go to the store,” she said. That would give her time to get Antonio and Lily settled and break the news to Nick that she had a kid with Stiles again.
“Nooooo, you don’t look like granddad or pap,” Laine said. “And pap always says you need to keep your shirt on.”
***
“Yeah I don’t get half naked like a werewolf all the time don’t worry about it.” Stiles rolled his eyes for the shirt comment and then remembered he should be talking to the person on the phone too. “Yeah, that sounds like a plan. Need anything from the store since we’ll be there? I’ll have Laine make a list so we don’t forget anything.”
Because their daughter thought color coding was fun. He approved.
***
“Food, but I wouldn’t ask you to grocery shop for a house full of werewolves,” Kate said. “Although, if you could pick up a few outfits for a 12 year old boy and a 6 year old girl, that would be helpful.”
She trusted Laine to pick clothes for her other kids. Not so much Stiles.
***
“Dude the jeep won’t hold enough food for your house.” Stiles snorted and took a deep breath. He was going to have to see Nick and Clay. And he hadn’t seen Jeremy since getting arrested a couple of times and he knew how the alpha was about people being trouble.
And he always had a slightly guilty conscience about things around people.
“Sure. I’ll get my personal shopper here to help me out.” Stiles grinned at Laine. “We’ll see you soon, assuming I can keep her out of the marker department.”
***
Laine’s lower lip jutted out dramatically. “But Daaaaaaaddy, my yellow and pink highlighters are almost dried out!”
Even without seeing her daughter’s face, the tone of her voice made Kate laugh again. Obviously she and Stiles had their hands full in that universe.
“Yeah, Daddy,” she said. “We all need some new markers.” Hopefully no one would freak out in front of the kids about Stiles stopping by. Clay seemed to be doing better with him around and Nick was the only one who knew about their dalliance, so it might not be a complete disaster. “I’ll see you in a little while.”
***
“Oh my god we’ve created a monster.” Stiles sighed knowing they were going to end up in the highlighter department when they stopped to get clothes. “We’ll be there soonish anyway. See you.”
