Ella had settled into life in Madison Valley pretty well. Ever since the relationship confusion in February, she’d been so much less tetchy about being with Kenny and Tea. She’d been entirely comfortable with them seeing her scars then, she couldn’t justify going back to trying to hide the monstrous marks that painted her skin.
But a child? That was something Ella was entirely unprepared for. He was cute, especially when he grinned and his dimple showed. But seriously. A quick glance at the network assured her this was just another bout of Madison Valley weirdness, and apparently it had happened a couple times before. That didn’t make it any easier, when she was faced with little Joey McCormick.
“Kenny!” she yelled, her voice booming through the house.
***
The whole relationship confusion wasn't too bad. Kenny did have a lot of fun, but he was glad things were back to normal, and he and Ella agreed to keep their relationship casual as it had been before. He liked her a lot, but he was not ready to be committed at all.
He thought he'd have some time off from Madison Valley bullshit, but it turns out that the dome had other plans. That morning, he had a rude awakening when his daughter had suddenly arrived. Not only that, but Tea's son (who had been here before) and their own daughter were here too. Tea had explained what was going on, which Kenny wasn't too happy about.
Tea had gone out with with Luca, so it was just him, Karyn, and Nona eating lunch in the kitchen. Suddenly he heard his name being called, so he raced upstairs. He walked into the room where Ella was. "What? What's wrong?" he asked, worried that something happened. Then his eyes fell on the little boy who was hugging Ella's legs.
"Oh, right. So that’s our kid from the future or an alternate universe or some shit, according to my other kid,” he shrugged.
***
Ella arched her brow. Kid from the future? Oh hell no. Ella was not having kids. Nothing against the boy, nothing against Kenny either. But she was not interested in hosting a parasite inside her body for nine months, then having to deal with it for years afterwards. No thank you. Not her idea of fun.
“Good, you can have him.” Ella attempted to pry the small boy off her legs. Her efforts only made him hang on tighter.
***
"I don't think he wants to let go," Kenny commented when he noticed the little boy hug her tighter. He was a little amused by it, which he tried to hide his smile behind his hand. But he knew Ella was uncomfortable, so he figured he should help her out. He turned to the little guy.
"Hey. What's your name again?" he asked. Nona had mentioned it on the bus, but he had forgotten it.
"Joey," the little boy replied. Kenny nodded. "Okay, Joey, are you hungry? We're having PB&J sandwiches downstairs."
"Yeah! C'mon, Mommy, let's go downstairs!" Joey said, grabbing Ella's hand and attempted to drag her with him.
***
Ella was grateful for that, and she nodded at Kenny in an effort to say as much without saying it. She could deal with the kid having her hand better than having him wrapped around her leg.
“At least he’s cute,” she said to Kenny. Not that she’d ever consider actually having kids, but if she did, she’d hope they’d be cute. Joey was adorable, and Ella let him lead the way downstairs. He navigated the house like he knew where he was going.
***
"Of course he's cute, with parents like us," Kenny said as they made their way downstairs.
He lead the way into the kitchen, where two girls were sitting at the table eating their sandwiches. One was an eight year old with blonde hair who looked like Kenny and the other was a couple years younger, was the spitting image of Tea. The younger one jumped up when she saw them all come in.
"Joey!" she said excitedly and ran to hug him. "Hi Ella!" she smiled as she hugged her too.
"Right, so that's Nona, my kid with Tea. Apparently, she thinks you’re like a second mom. And that one over there is Karyn." Kenny pointed to the blonde girl who looked at Ella and Joey. "That's Joey? Is he as annoying as Nona?" she asked.
"I'm not annoying!" Nona crossed her arms angrily.
The two girls started bickering, while Kenny just rolled his eyes and muttered, "You're both annoying" before he quickly made a sandwich for Joey.
***
Joey climbed into a chair next to Nona. Ella hovered at the door just watching the chaos. She really didn’t know what to think about these kids. Joey perplexed her the most, but the girls were confusing in their own right.
Kenny seemed to be handling it all right, and that made it less daunting for Ella. But it was still weird. Hopefully they wouldn’t be stuck with these kids for too long!
“You gonna make me a sandwich too, Daddy?” Ella asked. She was being a smart ass, but it was helping her not freak out too much.
***
One thing Kenny learned about this place and South Park was that when things got weird, it's just best to go with the flow. Besides, these things don't normally last long. The kids will go back soon enough. They just had to deal with them until then.
"Ha ha," he said sarcastically but he still made her a sandwich quickly. Once he was done, he sat back down to finish his own.
"Why'd she call you that?" Karyn asked. "Does she have a daddy kink or something?"
Kenny wasn't quite sure how to respond to that. He just shook his head. "No, I'm pretty sure she was just joking."
Meanwhile, Nona and Joey just looked confused. "Mommy, what is she talking about?" Joey asked Ella.
***
“Nothing,” Ella said with a sigh. Leave it to her to make a joke that turned into a thing. She had no idea how to be a mother, or even a responsible adult when there were kids around.
“The rest of you are calling him daddy, so I did too. That’s all.” She cursed herself for being so careless. She should have known better. But really how could she? She’d never been around kids.
***
"But he's not your dad," Karyn pointed out while Joey and Nona kept asking Ella what was going on. Kenny turned to Karyn. "How about you stop talking about that. How the fuck do you even know what that is anyway?"
"The internet," she shrugged as she sipped her juice. "Whenever I don't understand anything, you tell me to google it."
Kenny nodded then suddenly turned to the younger kids. "Hey, you two stop pestering El- er, Mommy, I mean, whatever, and google it," he told them.
***
“Seems reasonable to me,” Ella said. She sighed. Three kids in the house. That was a lot. More than she’d ever bargained for. She wasn’t sure she wanted kids, ever. She had no desire to settle down, to be a mom.
Joey was cute, but that didn’t mean she wanted to give up her life to be his mother.
***
Kenny instantly regretted telling the kids to google it as now they kept asking him for his phone. "Fine, here," he said as he reluctantly handing it to Nona. When Karyn tried to reach for it, Nona snatched it away and Kenny said, "Not you. You're grounded from my phone." Karyn had sent some texts to Ella that Kenny didn't want her to.
His daughter shrugged. "Whatever. I'm done eating, can I go play videogames?" The other two nodded and said they wanted to go play too.
"Yeah, fine, go. Mommy, er, Ella and I will clean up," Kenny told them. Once all three kids had left the room, he sighed. "I can't wait until they go back. I have no idea what I'm doing."
***
“I can’t do this,. Kenny.” Ella sighed. She wasn’t going to be much help with the clean up. She leaned against the counter. “I have no idea what I’m supposed to do with a child.” Especially one as little as Joey.
“I’ve never been around kids.” And never really wanted to be, truth told.
***
After a moment, Kenny got up and began cleaning up the mess they made. He was putting the dishes in the sink when Ella had spoke. "Me neither. My parents weren't the best example. I just try not to do what they did." In fact, they were a bad example of what parents should be like. They often drank and hit their sons. Kenny wouldn't do that, though he did end up swearing in front of the kids. He was pretty sure you weren't suppose to do that.
"And I know you said you can't do this, but I think you can handle it," he told her, putting a comforting arm around her shoulder. "And this is a temporary thing, it's not like Joey will be here forever. He and the other kids will be gone before you know it. And if things get too overwhelming, you can just come to me or Tea. She's been through this before."
***
Ella drew a breath and nodded. “Yeah. Okay. You’re right.” She nodded again and allowed herself a moment to lean against Kenny and take comfort from his presence. She was terrified she’d screw this kid up, but Kenny was right. Joey wouldn’t be around long. She didn’t think she could do it, otherwise.
