Raven had gone on a breakfast run this morning. She would never subject the housemates to her own cooking. She knew someone else could have done so, but she was in the mood for Hinkles breakfast foods. She got enough for her and Murphy and anyone else in the house who wanted it.
When she returned, she was a little bit shocked at what she found waiting for her. Murphy was sitting at the kitchen table with Alex, the little boy who claimed they were his parents last year. She remembered him, of course. She also knew this was a thing that happened in this town from seemingly every year. Last time Alex was here, Raven was absolutely shocked. This time, she was actually glad to see him. At least she thought she was.
"I really picked the right morning to crave Hinkles, huh?" she said, placing the bag of food on the table.
She glanced at Murphy, trying to gauge his reaction to their visitor.

“No, you picked the right morning to crave a bag of potatoes,” Alex said with a roll of his eyes. “Yes, Mom, you picked the right morning for Hinkles.”
“Alex, don’t be a little shit.” It would’ve been a much more effective rebuke if you weren’t trying not to laugh at him, Murphy. Just a word of advice.
Last year he’d been super weirded out by the kid because dude, come on, him sleeping with Raven at all? Even just to end up with an accident!baby that they were raising together? He’d wanted to smack someone for that. Just someone, nobody specific. Now, though? Now, though, Alex made a whole lot more sense -- the concept of him did, anyway.

Raven just chuckled. "Nah, it's alright. He's only speaking the truth."
She remembered the kid had a snarky streak. He certainly got that from both of his parents. She actually was proud of it in a way.
Then she started thinking about the last time he was here. She and Murphy were barely talking to each other. Now, they were living together and sharing the kitchen table. She wondered if Alex picked up on that.

“Call it a token attempt at being a good parent,” Murphy said with a shrug.
“You rock and you know it,” Alex said, rolling his eyes. But that made something click for him, something that had been under the surface. Something that hadn’t quite made sense yet. “You two are a lot more… relaxed,” he said, eyeing them warily. “What’s with the personality transplants or whatever?”
***
Raven was trying to think of the best way to answer that. This was probably confusing to the kid. It also made her wonder if he was ever going to happen, since he had different memories. The people who were raising him weren't close like this. Then she wondered if she and Murphy just aren't going to work out in the future, and that was just making her sad to think about it. So she stopped.
"Well, your dad and I are...well, we get along better now."
That was one way to go with it.

Alex snorted so hard he nearly choked himself. “I do have eyes, Mom,” he said. “I have eyes and I’m pretty observant. I get that from both of you guys, y’know.”
Okay, Murphy had to admit the kid had a point there. But what did he say in response? He had no idea. So he just went with the best he had at hand.
“Not so much a personality transplant as we just kind of grew on each other.”
***
"I know, hard to believe, right?" Raven said to Alex. "But it's true. We like each other now."
It was more than like, really. At least they did seem to get along in the future alternate universe if what Alex said was true. They got along with each other for him. Though it was nice to know they were good parents like that, she still preferred the way things were now. She and Murphy got along now because they wanted to be together. They just worked for some odd reason.
