Alex had pretty much been thrown for a loop when Dinah showed up while she was in the kitchen making coffee. She'd heard stories of random children showing up once in awhile. It sounded like it was some kind of tradition at this point. Maybe she should have expected she'd have to deal with this at some point, but she didn't. It was a complete shock.
Even more shocking? She wasn't adopted. She was the biological child of both herself and Sara. She still couldn't believe it. This shouldn't be possible, but in one universe, there was a lab accident that created this child. Once again, Alex was left trying to logically understand how this could be.
She'd try to deal with that later. Now, it was time to introduce Dinah to her other mother. Alex had the presence of mind to warn Sara ahead of time, at least.
"You want to knock on the door?" Alex asked her child. Yeah, that wasn't going to be any less weird.
"Okay," Dinah replied enthusiastically before knocking.
Now, all they had to do was wait. It was strange how much nervous tension Alex was feeling right now.
***
The surprise wake up call by her daughter with Sam had been enough to knock Sara off balance. Things were still a little weird between them since his Valentine’s Day proposal, even though it hadn’t really been him, and the arrival of a future child was… awkward, to say the least. Of course, it wasn’t the first time that Sara experienced this so she was able to roll with it.
Getting a phone call from Alex that they had a child was a little more surprising. She’d gone home to shower and change, seen the remnants in the kitchen that Dean had company for breakfast and wondered if he had kids show up too, and was just making another pot of coffee when she heard the knock on the door.
Taking a deep breath, she smiled as she opened it. “Morning,” she said. “There’s coffee brewing.” That was for Alex. She crouched down in front of their daughter, Dinah, and studied the girl’s face. She could definitely see bits of both of them represented there. “Do you want some juice, Dinah?”
***
Alex could definitely tell that Dinah was just so happy to see her other mother. The girl did seem smart enough to understand this was a different situation involving a portal and another earth. So in a way, she was meeting her parents again for the first time.
She couldn’t help smiling a little when Dinah went to give Sara a hug. It was kind of adorable to see Sara being hugged by a small child.
“Yes, I’ll have some juice,” she said, nodding.
***
Sara wasn’t expecting a hug, but she adapted easily and returned it. “Okay, great,” she said. “I’ll get that and we’ll get some coffee. Why don’t you find something to watch on TV while Alex and I talk in the kitchen for a few minutes.”
Once the girl was settled on the sofa, she headed to the kitchen. “So. How many do you have so far?”
***
Alex watched Dinah head into the living room area, making sure she was okay. It was weird feeling all maternal like that. She was used to feeling responsible for Kara as they grew up, but this was different. This was her kid...somehow biologically.
"So far, just this one," she replied. "I've heard about this invasion, so I'm expecting more. How about you?"
She was curious.
***
“A daughter with Sam,” she said. “I stayed at his place last night and she woke us up this morning.” Sara figured it was probably a good thing that the kid hadn’t found either of her parents in bed with someone else. They still weren’t really in a monogamous, committed relationship.
This was the first time that she’d had a kid show up with someone she wasn’t actively dating though, which was interesting. “I’ve been through this a few times. It usually lasts about a week.”
***
"Even though you've been through this, that must have still been a shock to wake up to," Alex said. "It definitely was for me when this little one showed up."
She glanced once more at the girl watching tv in the other room. "So I guess there is an Earth that we both live on, huh?"
She knew about the different universes and Earths already. She supposed it wasn't such a stretch that it was possible they were both from the same Earth in some alternate world.
"Do kids show up sometimes to parents who aren't together usually?" She might have had a crush on Sara at one point, but they had never been anything other than friends. So this was a bit surprising to her.
***
Sara definitely wouldn’t be opposed to hooking up with Alex, but she had enough confusion in her life with Sam that she definitely wasn’t looking for anything serious. “I guess,” she said. “It’s never happened for me, but I’ve heard about it from other people.” There were definitely worse people she could have kids with than Alex.
“So, basically, we’ll have to figure out a schedule for keeping her until she gets sent back where she belongs,” she said. “It’s probably easier for me to do days since I should be at the club in the evenings, but being the boss has its perks.”
***
Alex wouldn't mind a hookup so much, either. She decided she was going to just have fun and see where her new life and identity would take her. Sure, she'd like something serious at some point, but she wasn't sure that was something she could have here in Madison Valley. She pushed that thought aside for now.
"Well, this is a first for me in general. My first kid invasion," Alex said with a little laugh. It was the nervous sort, like she had no idea what she was doing. She knew she wasn't ready to be a mom at this point in her life. She wasn't sure it would ever be something she'd want.
"I think that schedule works out. I work days, you work nights. At least the dome is being convenient that way."
***
“Yeah, I guess it’s something,” Sara said. “Although I have another one I have to worry about too. Hopefully they’ll get along.” Her kid with Sam was from Madison Valley and should at least be used to weirdness. Then again, it wasn’t like their home world was all that normal either, so maybe this one would be okay too.
She poured them each a cup of coffee and handed one to Alex. “We’ll make it work. I’m sure we can get help from some of our friends if need be too.” Maybe she’d make Dean babysit. That would be funny.
***
"Hey, I could even look after your other one if needed." How hard could it be to care for two or maybe three kids at one time?
She took a sip of the coffee offered to her. "Dinah's pretty smart and mature, I think. I bet she'll handle the other siblings thing okay. I am betting she has some cousins, too."
She definitely needed to talk to Kara about this. She wondered if her sister had any arrive. She'd call or text soon to find out.
***
Sara smiled. “You’re sweet. I’ll let you know if I need some help. In the meantime, I guess we should get to know our kid a little better, huh?”
***
Alex chuckled to herself. No one really called her sweet before. That was more reserved for her sister, who truly was a nice person. Alex had her moments, she supposed.
She glanced over at the little girl still sitting patiently on the couch. "I think that's a good plan. I actually do want to know more about her."
***
“Me too,” Sara said. “And her world.” Because she found she liked the idea of a universe where she and Alex knew each other and got together. Even though she wasn’t particularly interested in the idea of a relationship here and now, it was nice to think about having one in another time and place.
***
Alex liked that idea of that as well. Of course, she wasn't sure what a relationship in her own world was like, yet. Having a life somewhere with Sara didn't sound like a terrible thing at all. She would never expect anything like that here, and she was okay with that. She still liked her life here. She could admit that to herself at this point.
She smiled at the girl sitting on the couch. She was glad that in some life, she could settle and have a family of her own. It was possible.
