Back home in Lucas, Kansas, Dorothy wouldn't have been caught dead at a Starbucks. She thought they were terribly over priced, and not really all that good. She preferred her coffee straight out of an electric coffee maker right in her own kitchen, with just a dab of cream and a pinch of sugar. But a job was a job, and she definitely liked getting the paycheck. It wasn't great, she didn't have a whole lot left over after she took care of the necessary things, but it was a paycheck.
A glance at the clock told her it was time for her break. She finished up the order she was working on, then pulled her apron off. Grabbing her drink from under the counter, she headed to the front side, and hoped there was an empty seat where she could sit. There was, but someone was sitting right next to the empty.
"You mind?" she asked, hoping she didn't look too desperate. She really wanted to get off her feet, and she had no desire to go to the back of the store. She liked to stay out front, where she could see what was going on.
