Who: Chris Argent and Talia Hale
What: Just a random run-in
When: Today
Where: That Book Place
Warnings: None
Status: Closed/Complete
It was his day off and he didn’t have a shift with Jill, so Chris was running a bunch of errands -- such was the joy of being an adult. He had a few books to pick up at the bookstore that they’d been holding onto for him, but before he grabbed those he was taking a quick look around since he actually hadn’t been in for a couple weeks -- he’d just called to see if they had what he needed.
He couldn’t help having a love of knowledge; it was one of the few things he was grateful to his father for. One of the few things that Gerard hadn’t given him and corrupted.
Possibly the only thing, but he wasn’t going to delve into that.
No, he was just going to make a random sweep of the store and see if anything caught his eye. And sure enough, after about fifteen minutes, something did -- except it wasn’t a book by any means.
“Hello, Talia,” he greeted with a slight nod. They were grown adults who could full well keep their private lives private, but they had progressed to the point where they could both acknowledge each other civilly; a bit of conversation wouldn’t raise any eyebrows.

Talia liked to read too, although today she wasn’t looking for literature. No, she was looking for a certain recipe she used to make when Derek was a kid. She had the book back home, but of course it hadn’t come here with her and she needed it. They had shelves and shelves of cookbooks here, but of course, it wasn’t as easy as she’d hoped to find the right one.
Hearing Chris’s voice, she turned to face him, nodding in greeting. “Good afternoon,” she said.
They’d spent a lot more than that one night together, but an observer wouldn’t be able to tell they were more than casual acquaintances. They were that good at being discreet.
***
Of course they were, they had to be. They didn’t especially want or need anybody finding out that they were sleeping together. Not that they were ashamed of it, but the knowledge getting out was a headache neither of them needed.
He most certainly wasn’t ashamed of it, though, they’d covered that already -- and she obviously believed him or things wouldn’t have continued.
“Are you looking for anything in particular?” he asked curiously. “I can take a try at helping, if you want.”

“A recipe,” she said. “One of Derek’s favorites. I can’t remember all the ingredients so I was hoping I could find the cookbook I had at home. But it doesn’t seem like they have it here.”
She sighed, crossing her arms and looking over at him with a raised eyebrow.
“And you? Searching for an ancient Latin text, perhaps?”

That got a snort out of Chris. “If I was doing that, I’d have better luck at the library. But no, I’ve got a couple books they’re holding onto for me and I just wanted to take a look around before I pick them up.”
It was even the truth, too, which was good. Not that he was planning on lying to Talia, but if he was going to outwardly lie to the public as a whole… well, the best lies had a kernel of truth somewhere in them somewhere.

She nodded, putting the cookbook she was looking at back on the shelf. Noticing there was nobody around them, she gave him perhaps a longer look than she should have. There were no plans to meet tonight...yet. She intended to change that.
Without words, however.
She raised an eyebrow questioningly, knowing that he would understand.

Chris was good at silent communication, not so much because he’d had to be as because he liked studying people. He liked knowing about them. And he had long since learned that a good deal of communication was silent.
And so he just gave her the slightest of nods -- he knew exactly what she’d meant, and it was exactly how he felt like spending his evening. Or at least a good portion of it. No, the majority of it. They’d quickly learned that while he was only human, he was surprisingly good at keeping up with her, which made for an entertaining evening for the both of them.

Talia wasn’t ashamed of their affair in the least. She enjoyed it immensely and they were both uncommitted adults. But keeping it quiet simply seemed the proper thing to do; she didn’t want or need the town or particularly their children discussing her sex life.
It was between her and Chris, and nobody else, for however long it lasted.
“I suppose i’ll have to search the internet for the recipe,” she said, sounding g a bit annoyed. She was perfectly capable of using a computer, but she was the sort who still preferred books.
“Good evening, then, Argent,” she said, giving him a look saying she was going to make it very good for him indeed.

“Good evening, Talia,” he returned with another slight nod before they parted ways.
They both knew the routine by now, though. If they ran into each other in public like this and decided they wanted to enjoy each other’s company -- which was how it mostly went -- they quietly arranged it with each other, separated, and met up at the inn. This time wasn’t going to be any different.
He picked up the books that the store had been holding for him -- it wouldn’t do to make things look suspicious just after having been talking to her, after all -- and slipped away to the inn.
He didn’t enjoy keeping things from Allison, as a general rule. It wasn’t how he liked living his life. But his involvement with Talia was an entirely different story. His involvement with Talia was full of details Allison would probably just plug her ears and go “lalalala” at, anyway.
