WHO Bucky & Kara
WHAT Talking and things
WHEN: Monday morning
WHERE: Their room
WARNINGS: mentions of sexual activity
STATUS: Closed/Complete
Something was wrong. Bucky knew that the moment he became aware of his surroundings. His metal arm was resting over Kara's waist, his hand splayed across her tummy, and one of his legs was nestled between hers. He wasn't wearing a shirt, or even pants. Just boxers. Thin boxers, from the feel of them, and with how close they were together, there was a high probability that she could feel him against her back. Bucky went still as a statue as his eyes flew open, confirming what he'd surmised thus far.
Very, very carefully, he began to extricate himself in the hopes that he wouldn't wake her up. Memories flew by him, only they were of the future. It was very disconcerting in a way that Bucky couldn't quite put into words. He got off the bed and went for his dresser, opening the drawer reserved for long sleeved shirts he could sleep in and found Kara's clothes. A memory tugged at him and he opened the next drawer down to find his sleep clothes piled in with his socks and underwear. Bucky marveled at that as he pulled on his shirt to hide the scars and the cold metal of his arm from her. She didn't need to see that.
***
Kara made a whimpering noise when she lost the warmth of Bucky’s body pressed against hers. It was much cozier in his arms. Of course, after a few moments, when she was fully awake, she realized that something unusual was going on and remembered the past week. They moved in together. And not only that, but they had sex. A lot.
It wasn’t difficult for her to figure out that Bucky was probably freaking out about everything. She rolled over and propped herself up on her elbow, not caring that she was only wearing one of his t-shirts at the moment. “Hey, come back here,” she said, frowning a little when she saw that he was pulling on a long sleeved shirt. After all the times she assured him that the metal arm didn’t bother her, it hurt that he still wanted to keep that part of himself hidden.
***
Kara looked very good in his t-shirt. He was willing to give it a beat if she wasn't freaked out waking up in bed with him. Did she remember the past week? Bucky walked back over to bed and carefully climbed back in with her, sliding beneath the covers. He still kept a bit of distance between them, turning on his side to face her, his hands underneath his head.
"I didn't mean to wake you," he replied softly. "How did you sleep?" They'd had a whole week of living together, of having a happy, healthy relationship, but he didn't remember exactly how they'd gotten to that place. It was comforting to know that they could get there, he was just worried about what it was going to mean for them now that they'd had that experience to work off of.
***
“I was sleeping great,” she said. “Until someone decided to leave me all by myself.”
Kara wasn’t about to let him get away with pulling back. It was pretty obvious that he remembered the same things she did from the past week and she knew him well enough to know that he was probably afraid he was going to hurt her somehow, even though that made no sense, especially after the past week.
As she moved to close the distance he left, she reached out and pressed her hand against his chest. “I love you,” she said. “Are you okay?”
***
It was more of a surprise than it should have been as she closed the distance between them. "I don't remember how we got to where we were last week," Bucky said after a long minute of silence as he tried to figure out what he wanted to say. He wrapped his arms around her again. Being close to her was comforting and grounding, and she wasn't panicking so that was good.
"I love you too." He let his fingers draw random patterns on her back to distract him from panicking anymore than he already was internally. He thought of the house he'd bought for them all and wondered if it would be for all of them plus one. "I like living with you. Being close to you. That doesn't have to change. Right?" He'd understand if she wanted to go back to her place.
***
Kara was relieved when he wrapped his arms around her. She’d been afraid that he would reject her efforts and pull away. And when he said that he liked living together, she let out a breath she didn’t even realize she was holding. This last week had been great and she was afraid that he’d want her to go back to her own place because of his concerns about hurting her.
“I don’t remember how we got there either, but I liked it,” she said. “And I would definitely like to keep living with you.” Assuming they could figure out the space issue since apparently Veronica and Summer would be moving in too. As least, she hoped they would be, even though now she understood why neither she nor Bucky remembered that the wedding was happening.
***
Bucky wasn't quite as comfortable as he wanted to be, but logic told him that if he pulled away drastically now, something irreparable might happen. That was unacceptable. He was glad that she didn't want to move out, that she liked what they'd experienced. He was trying not to panic about the sex while trying to think of the right way to ask if she'd actually had an IUD in place like they'd thought.
"I had told you so much. And you still love me. Do you- remember any of it?" That would change things, but before he got too ahead of himself, it was important to have all the information possible.
***
“I remember everything,” Kara said. And none of it changed how she felt about him. “And of course I still love you.” There wasn’t much he could tell her that would change that.
She hadn’t realized yet that they’d been having unprotected sex. Once she did, she would probably freak out a little. Or a lot. But for right now, her focus was on Bucky and making sure he was okay. She knew from the start that she was going to have to be patient with him because of his baggage and she was totally okay with that. He was worth it.
***
That was both a relief and terrifying to hear. He wouldn't have to tell her again, but there wasn't much she didn't know. Bucky let his forehead rest against her's for a few minutes, quiet as he just enjoyed being close to her. There was no way he was ready to be a father, nor even a husband, but he and Kara were closer now as a result. That much was undeniable.
"I don't know what happened, or how, but I'm glad it did." He let his hand rest low on her hip. How long would it take before they knew for certain? Since they'd been so far away from having sex before whatever it was hit them, Bucky thought the possibility that she'd had gotten the IUD were slim to none.
He pressed a soft kiss against her lips. They shouldn't have sex again, not until they knew, but he wanted to test the memories in his head. Could they truly be together?
***
Kara lazily returned his kiss and then smiled at him again. She knew that he’d been afraid if they became physical that he would somehow hurt her, despite her assurances that it was nearly impossible, and now she was hopeful that this unexpected glimpse of the future would make him willing to take that step.
“So am I,” she said. “I hope that it’s really our future.”
The last thing she wanted to do was pressure him to have sex again, so she wasn’t going to ask him about it yet. He probably needed some time to process everything that happened this past week and that was totally reasonable.
***
Their future. That was something he never thought he'd have, let alone with someone as kind and special as Kara was. Even if that included a child they might not strictly be prepared for.
"Last week. When we were together. You'd had something done to prevent pregnancy." He paused for a moment to think about how he should word what he wanted to say. "Things are all- jumbled. When did you get that done?" He didn't think it was likely, but considering how unreliable his memory could be, he needed her to confirm it.
***
It took her a moment to recall what he was talking about and as soon as she did, her jaw dropped open. “Uh… well, I actually haven’t,” Kara said. “Because we weren’t there yet.” Which meant that they had no protection last week.
“Shit.”
Kara didn’t swear very often, but that seemed like a fairly succinct summation of their current situation.
***
Bucky just scooted closer so that he could wrap his arms around her and pull her close. That's what he'd thought. "When would you know?" he asked, because they needed to start thinking of a plan and what to do if it turned out that she was pregnant.
He was weirdly calm about the whole thing. No, he wasn't the least bit ready for a child, but at this point, it was either a reality or it wasn't. If it was a reality, there were options, but Bucky knew that decision resided almost entirely with Kara. Plus, there was the issue of whether or not his being an enhanced human and her not being human made a difference when it came to their offspring.
***
“I don’t know,” Kara admitted. Her physiology was similar to that of a human, but not exactly the same and there weren’t exactly a lot of people she could ask to help her understand the differences. “I’m not even sure if it’s possible for a human and Kyrptonian to procreate.”
Maybe Clark would know. Or Alex. She was going to have to have some uncomfortable conversations this week. “I’ll see what I can find out.”
***
Bucky could piece together what finding out would entail on her part. He pressed a kiss to her forehead in response. "We'll figure it all out," he promised. That was the extent of what he was comfortable promising, since so much was outside their control.
"What can I do?" She knew best what she needed. All he wanted to do was support her and she was too important for him to just guess what she needed or wanted.
***
Knowing that he would be there to provide support was pretty much all Kara needed and she smiled at him as she snuggled closer. “Promise you’ll love me no matter what happens,” she said. Not that she thought Bucky would abandon her if they were unexpectedly pregnant, but she knew that neither of them was really prepared for that.
“And I guess I should look into actually getting an IUD soon,” she added, almost turning it into a question. They had been waiting because he wasn’t ready for a physically intimate relationship and she wasn’t sure if that changed.
***
"Of course I will," he replied with a bit of a smile. She'd done the same for him and what he'd asked her to carry was far worse than a child. "You're the best thing that's happened to me in a long time, Kara. Nothing's going to change how I feel about you." Bucky knew that to be true. What he did want to wait on was proposing until they knew for sure. He didn't think he was ready for marriage, but if there was a baby on the way, he would take that step and at least ask the question.
"You don't have to rush," was his reply about the IUD. They had to know first if she was pregnant and then they could figure out a game plan. Bucky also needed a bit of time to settle, to get the memories sorted in his head. Future, past, present. It was hard to keep straight on a good day with the past and the present, so adding the future on made things complicated.
***
Kara nodded. At the very least, she needed to make sure she wasn’t pregnant before trying to get birth control. Though at the same time, she was glad that they’d taken that step, even if they weren’t exactly themselves at the time, and she hoped that Bucky wasn’t going to want to go back to waiting indefinitely.
“I don’t have any regrets,” she said. “I like living with you and being close to you.” She echoed his earlier words, hoping he would understand what she meant.
***
"I don't have any regrets either," Bucky promised her, pressing another soft kiss against her lips. "If this is what the dome decided to do to us - brings us closer together - I'm okay with that." So far, the dome had caused the incident that brought them together, and now it had brought them closer.
He'd tell her about the house once he spoke to Steve. "I'm glad you don't have to wait for me again." The last thing Bucky wanted was to make her wait for him any longer than he already had, only with the magic of the dome, that time was gone in a blink, their memories the only way to know he'd made her wait.
***
“Well, let’s at least wait until we can figure out the birth control thing for real,” Kara said. Of course, condoms could probably work as a stopgap, but she figured a few days to sort things out was a good idea either way. “And I’ll talk to Clark and Alex as soon as possible and see if either of them knows if pregnancy is even a possibility.”
Alex might not know, but she was a scientist, so it was possible. And Clark was dating a human, so presumably he knew how he and Lois were handling the whole birth control thing. Not that she really wanted to think about that.
***
Bucky smiled. She already had a plan and that was good enough for him. "This probably wasn't the best time for Clark to arrive, but I am glad your cousin is here," he replied. Now that he thought about it, that had been their first time and after she'd found out Clark had arrived. He was going to have to make their next 'first time' more special next time. Maybe when he showed her the house. After they found out if she was pregnant or not.
"Hopefully between the two of them, you'll get some answers." J'onn might be a good resource, too. "And I'll talk to Steve in the meantime. Make sure he's good after the wedding." And also to make sure that he was good with Kara living with them, not to mention the possible pregnancy and the house. There was a lot to talk about.
***
Oh right, the wedding. Well, at least now they knew why they hadn’t remembered that. “At least you didn’t miss time?” Kara said. It was a sliver of a silver lining in this whole mess. She knew that Bucky had been more concerned about that than he was willing to let on.
“And I am glad Clark is here too,” she said. “You two will have to get to know each other.”
***
She was always able to find the silver lining, no matter how small it might be. In all honesty, so long as he and his people were whole, happy and healthy, Bucky would count that as a win. Or at least, not a loss. "We will," he replied about Clark, thinking of the bachelor party. Hopefully they wouldn't have to test out Kryptonian strength in a very unfun way against his own.
"What do you feel like for breakfast? I should probably get something started soon." There was a part of him that didn't want to get up, but he knew it was the right thing to do.
***
“Pancakes,” she said immediately. “And bacon. And eggs. Ooh, maybe some hash browns?”
It was good that she was living with two people who had immense appetites. At least they wouldn’t look at her strangely for eating as much as she did.
