It was a nice, warm day that almost didn’t feel like it was winter at all, and that was the kind of day Riley loved best. Warm and sunshiney and blue skies. And it was a great day to be outside. That was what she loved about this place, one of the very few things she actually liked about being in Madison Valley. Being outside and feeling very outside. It was nice and so different from her part of New York.
Since it was nice, she decided to take the long way home from school, which doubled the already long walk but let her stroll through neighbourhoods that weren’t her own, find new people and see new things. Riley liked that. She didn’t even mind doing it alone. Riley did a lot alone these days. Half of what she would normally do with Maya, which was almost everything. Sometimes it was lonely. Sometimes, like when she was walking, it was nice to have the time to think.
And at fifteen she had a lot to think about.
And being Riley, she was a little weird about it.
Face up toward the sun, eyes all but closed, she walked down the street, taking slow, careful steps so she didn’t stray into the street. Not so careful to make sure she didn’t walk into people.
