Lucas was not feeling the Christmas spirit even a little. The shadow of his loss seemed to extend over everything, darkening even the lights that twinkled and the carolers that sang as he walked down the streets. It was supposed to have been a happy Holiday season this year, with he and Paige counting down the days to expanding their family, looking towards the future with hope and optimism. Instead, it was shrouded in grief, and it was a grief that Lucas wasn't sure would ever go away.
It had affected his relationship with Paige, too. He still loved her more than he could ever express, but there was tension there that hadn't been before. They were each dealing with the loss in their own way, and he was afraid that he'd permanently damaged their relationship somehow by suggesting that they try again soon. It had apparently been too soon to her. Lucas had only been looking at things logically, believing that if they were able to conceive again, maybe some of the sadness would fade. He knew that losing this child would never stop hurting, but at least they might have a little bit of joy to counteract it.
Apparently Paige did not think the same way.
He was out Christmas shopping right now not because he wanted to be, but because he knew that he had to be. He didn't feel festive, or intoxicated by the season. He felt...empty, as if someone had shoveled out everything from inside of it and left it on the curb with the garbage. But he had to get something for Paige for Christmas. It was expected. And he would do it for that reason and that alone.
Not that he'd found anything. His frustration was growing as he went in and out of the stores, trying to find something that struck him. But his heart just wasn't in it and he hadn't had any luck so far. If there was anything he was looking forward to, it was New Years, and putting this terrible year behind him.
