Since regaining his memories, Jace had been far happier. The memories returned hadn't all been good ones - Jace and Clary had both had a difficult few years. But in the end, after they'd defeated Valentine and Sebastian, there had come a rush of happiness like Jace had never thought he'd have.
Love, instead of destroying him, had opened his world to exciting new possibilities. Opening his heart to her had allowed in a joy like he'd never known. He felt more alive than he'd ever felt before. And while he was still often a conceited, self-centered jerk, around Clary he was an entirely different person.
That did not, however, mean that he liked Madison Valley. Jace was not a person who liked being idle. He was not someone who could settle well into a peaceful little town like this. Although Jace had lost the self-destructiveness that he'd had before he met Clary, he still had the heart of a fighter. In Madison Valley, there was nothing to fight. And in addition to that, the constant ache in his heart that came from Alec's absence was hard to bear.
Isabelle (and others) were constantly telling him to accept that he was there and that he needed to settle down and find a Mundane job. Always before, he'd chafed at the idea. It seemed anathema to everything that he was. In fact, if he wasn't a shadowhuntwr, Jace had no idea who he actually was. It was so entwined with who he was that it wasn't possible to separate the two. Nonetheless, he couldn't simply do nothing. And there was only so long he could spend working out at the gym.
So he'd decided a few weeks ago that he wS going to have to listen to Isabelle's advice. He was going to have to swallow his pride and take a job if he wanted to eat, or buy Christmas presents. And while he hated that it was necessary, Jace had accepted the inevitable and had found himself a job. Working the grill at Wendy's. He hadn't told anyone about it, and he hated it every bit as much as he thought he would. But he was very much looking forward to his first paycheck. He couldn't help but grudgingly thank Valentine for giving him the discipline to handle horrible and unpleasant situations.
He had closed tonight at work, and when he was done he locked up, and started heading to Anytime Fitness, still wearing his uniform. Once he got thee, he would shower and cement the alibi that he had given Clary. Because of how late he got off, he'd never met anyone on his walk to the gym.
Until tonight.
Recognizing someone on the street in front of him, he ducked quickly into an alley and hoped that they wouldn't follow.
