When Halloween had been explained to Lucrezia Borgia, it had only reminded her of a masquerade from her own time. Little else about the occasion had made much sense to her. Masks and parties were things she could relate to and understand, but once the boy began to prattle on about spirits in conjunction with candy and good fun, she had to simply accept that there were some practices in the twenty-first century that would have to remain a mystery. Regardless, she had dressed appropriately for a Roman masquerade, and it turned out that she was not far off. Her clothing, which on any other day made her a spectacle, blended in with the other costumes she passed in the crowd. She wore a flowing pink and red gown with a draping of sheer fabric down the back. A crown of pearls rested in her golden hair, but unlike last time, these were made of plastic. Everything in this place was made of plastic. She carried with her a mask, but after only a few minutes at the party, she had grown bored with it and it now rested in her palm held down by her waist.
Just when she had begun growing anxious that she would not recognize anyone at this party – nor did she know enough about the local customs to begin mingling freely – Lucrezia had spotted Cassiopeia Black. She instantly made a beeline towards her friend. She had not yet begun to sample the... fruit punch (was that what it was called?) of the party, but she had with her several pieces of candy that she had collected. She was smiling genuinely by the time she had reached her friend, especially emboldened by the fact that Cassi was wearing one of the dresses they had worked on together. "Cassiopeia, I am so glad you are here, too," she cried enthusiastically. "And you look so well! So many others chose to dress so... bloody."
