Cesare rubbed his eyes, trying vainly to relieve the headache that had built up earlier and reached a pounding crescendo as the night wore on. He was slouched in his chair, annoyed beyond words as the situation unfolded itself on the network. He wasn't a man that enjoyed being forced to act. He wasn't a man that enjoyed being pressured to move one way or another, and most of all he wasn't a man that enjoyed being questioned. He wasn't a man with integrity, it was true, he was a man that compromised his morals regularly for the sake of whatever needed to be done in the moment. But this? It was irritation and setback he didn't have inclination or patience to play out.
Cesare opened his eyes and squinted in Lucrezia's direction. She helped. She was here and that helped. He got to his feet and approached her, smiling faintly though it didn't make him look any more relaxed than he ever did. Any more kind. He touched her face then sank down to a crouch so he could rest his head in her lap, his hands settling on the outside of her thighs. He remained like that for a long moment, silent, breathing her in and relaxing into the familiarity of her. It was comforting.
He did manage a laugh, bleak though it was, and looked up at his sister. "I played my cards wrong with Cuthbert," he said by way of introducing what was troubling him. "And he's proving more of a liability than he is a tool." He shook his head. "My folly for expecting more from a child." It wouldn't ordinarily bother him, he'd simply cast Cuthbert aside and proceed, only that the boy's actions were paving the way for future dissent. It annoyed Cesare. He wondered if the other two, Georgia and Lissa, were also annoyed by the situation.
