Unladylike Behavior
Who: Michelle and Sophia (and special guest, Ruth Vega)
What: Fight Practice (and scandalizing the neighbor)
When: Wednesday, January 10
Where: Michelle's house
Warnings: None, probably
Status: Incomplete
Ruth Vega drove onto Miss Webster's property and down the drive to the large parking area between the main house and the outbuildings. She worked in real estate so she knew how much the property was worth, and still didn't understand how the young woman had afforded to buy the property. Miss Webster had only said, "It was a gift," when she asked. It made her wonder just what the young lady had done to earn such a gift.
She knocked and rang the bell at the house, but no one responded. She couldn't see into the garage so didn't know if Miss Webster was at home or away. Well, it wouldn't hurt to look around, just in case she was in one of the other buildings. The barn was locked up, but she found the door to the machine shop unlocked when she tried it. Rationalizing that she should check that Miss Webster was inside, and hadn't just left it unlocked, Ruth opened the door peered inside.
Half of the 30 x 60 foot building interior contained all sorts of equipment that Ruth didn't recognize. Other than a barbell and weights, and a set of dumbbells, she had no idea what most of it was for. The other side of the building was open, with some padded mats on the floor, and a variety of weapons on the walls, many of which were unfamiliar and just weird looking.
Miss Webster and the girl who lived with her were on the mat, both dressed as if for bed, in loose knit pants and undershirts that did little to hide the bras they wore. Ruth tried not to judge; it's not like they were in public, or expected to be seen in those outfits. As she watched, Miss Webster seized...Sophia?...and flung her to the ground. She sprawled there for a long moment, and Miss Webster helped her up. "You want to try to slap the ground with your arms, to absorb some of the impact. Like this," she added, and fell backwards, her arms whacking the mat noisily.
She rolled back to her feet with surprising ease. "Try it again." Sophia tried it a few times, with Miss Webster correcting her each time. "You'll get the hang of it eventually, Miss Webster said. "I think that's enough fall practice for now."
She walked to the wall and grabbed some boxing gloves. She tossed a pair to Sophia. "A famous fighter in my world once said, 'Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face,' and he was right. Most people will flinch, or freeze, if they get hit. It's a natural reaction, but it's not helpful. Getting over it takes practice."
