Nothing. No drug. No type of alcohol. Maybe not even good sex could compare to the thrill you got from eating cotton candy. At least in Kady's opinion. For no other reason she came to the fair. The magician had no interest in the rides of dodgy engineering. Not the games rigged to part you from your hard earned money. No other food. Just cotton candy.
Still, she wandered the midway as she tore off chunks of spun sugar dyed a lurid pink then tucked it between her lips where it could melt on her tongue. She found tiny moments of pure bliss in the treat, and didn't care who saw the look on her face each time another piece of fluffy goodness left a sticky mess on her fingertips. For all she knew, the people she passed or bumped into were clients at the Den, and had seen far more than this of her.
She found herself entering the rides area without paying too much attention to where she was...until she came face to face with a memory.
"But I don't wanna go in by myself! It looks scary!"
"Goddammit, Kady! When are you going to grow up and realize the whole world is scary. Just...go inside. I'll meet you at the exit."
"Why can't you go in with me?"
"None of your business. Just go in."
Kady had been five. The thing that hadn't been any of her business and why her mother wouldn't go in with her was her mom had been strung out and needed a fix. There'd been a hedgemage among the roustabouts who had agreed to work with her mom to feed her magic addiction...for a blowjob. This place would allow her mom to ditch her long enough to get her fix.
Fully grown Kady looked at the place with a mixture of childhood terror, a neglected daughter's resentment, and the anger fueled determination of an independent woman intent on reclaiming her strength.
The sign on top of the rickety building read Fun House of Terror and Mirror Maze in faded letters. It was a trifecta of nightmares for children everywhere. There were more detailed explanations coming from the barker about working your way through the Fun House with its rooms of illusions, moving floors and false doors on into the House of Terror where demons and ghouls waited to steal your soul then finally, you worked your way through the Mirror Maze with its deceptive turns and dead ends.
Kady huffed as she scowled in open disapproval of the place, even though inside the little girl who had been lost in a similar place all those years ago screamed for her older self to conquer the beasts she couldn't back then.
"...fucking sadists," she muttered as she contemplated going in or not.
