Who: Jack Kline & Dean Winchester
Where: Axe Throwing
When: After the birthday debacle.
Warnings: none
Jack was enjoying the time he got to spend with Dean here. There hadn’t been enough of it when the end of the world was coming up fast at home, and the last thing he remembered was becoming a bomb to eliminate God, but that had never come to pass. At least not for this version of him. Before he could see it through, he had come here. Just appeared out of nowhere. And the three people he loved most in the world were here too, so he never really questioned it. He met Dean and Sam’s children, cat shopped with Castiel, and grew to love the life he had found here. He never asked about things at home, like what had happened after or if Chuck had been locked away, he just knew that most things had turned out okay. And if not - his family was here, they were safe, and that was all that mattered to him. He was simple, and didn’t mind being blind to life there, at least for now. In his few short years of life he had never known fun or had a chance at a life that wasn’t fighting, so this place was a nice break. Axe throwing hadn’t been something that Jack had ever known to be an actual thing until he had overheard several conversations about it from customers at his work. He had thrown axes before - knives, swords, anything with a blade really, but only at work and mostly when something he was hunting was trying to get away from him. From what he understood this axe throwing was like a sport, like darts, where there was a big target and you scored it and everything. He really wanted to try it, and the night after he heard about it Dean happened to come into his Taco Bell to grab some tacos, and the pair ended up making plans to go. With the soft rustling of wings, Jack appeared on Dean’s front lawn before the man had a chance to go to his car and get in. He might have been a little early, but he was excited. “Hey, Dean,” he said with a small wave. “Do you want to drive or can I give you a lift there?” It might have slipped his mind that they were supposed to meet at the place. “Do you know if they have axes or if we’re supposed to bring our own?” Dean had been given plenty of time to reflect on his behavior and the way he had treated Jack back home. He had come to the realization that he had reacted poorly, due to the repeated losses that all seemed to follow in his wake. First it had been Castiel, then his inexperience caused him to hurt innocent people and then his mother became one of his victims, and that had been the final tipping point. Overcome with grief and frustration over his inabilty to save anyone, he had lashed out at the easiest target. When the nephilim had made an appearance in Madison, he was determined fix that. He wasn’t sure where on the timeline he came from, but Dean had managed to figure out that regardless of what point, there was already bad blood between them, and he wanted it to be different here. He had just kissed Lisa and Charlie goodbye and was on his way to the car when he was suddenly startled by an unexpected voice. Dean turned around to face Jack, biting back his urge to snap at him for sneaking up on him like that, but he knew he meant no harm. “I’ll drive us, and, no. We don’t need to bring our own axes.” He motioned for Jack to get in the passenger seat of the car and he walked around the front to get in the driver’s seat, starting it up. “So, how’s work? Meeting any cute chicks? Or…guys, I suppose.” “Sorry,” Jack said, the look on Dean’s face saying that he was surprised to see Jack come out of nowhere. He was probably not used to it anymore, with any of the angels here. Jack walked around to the passenger side of the Impala and got in, waiting for Dean to start the drive. Unconsciously maybe he had wanted to catch Dean before he left as a ride in the Impala with Dean behind the wheel and the soft rumble of the engine was familiar and comfortable to him, a thing that made him happy, and maybe a little nostalgic. All that was missing were Sam and Cas, but he had a feeling those days were most likely over. “Work is good. We have a lot of downtime on my morning shifts and I think I’ve made and tried everything on the breakfast menu, and a lot of the fountain drinks. Not the most exciting ever but it keeps me busy,” he shrugged at the question of cute girls or guys coming in. “A lot of nice looking people come in, two girls have put their phone numbers in my cell phone, but I haven’t called anyone,” he shrugged again. “What about you? How is work and the family?” "It's all good. Don't worry about it." Dean assured him with a smile and a wave of his hand. "If I worked there, I would probably gain like twenty pounds from eating that junk all the time." He commented with a laugh, tapping along the steering wheel to the rhythm of the song playing. "Wait. Excuse me?" He turned to look at Jack with wide eyes, slightly shocked. "Not one, but two girls gave you their number, and you haven't called or texted? Dude, why the hell not?" At the mention of work and family, Dean just shrugged. "Work is work. Lisa and Charlie are good. I swear, she's the cutest baby I've ever seen. Wait till you see all these pictures I took of her." He beamed proudly at the mention of his daughter, completely in love with her and everything she did. "Still have a ways to go with wedding planning stuff. Supposed to get married in September, I think. Not sure if that's still happening." “I’m just glad I don’t work for a pizza place, my paycheck would go entirely to them.” Jack smiled, and gave a laugh at Dean’s words. He wondered silently if he could gain weight, he had never really thought about it before. He had only been around a few years but he had never changed, aside from a few haircuts and styles. Would he just always look like a teenager? He shook his head to clear the thoughts and smiled over at Dean. “Yes, two girls. I’m not sure I want to call them yet, the speed dating thing was kind of scary and I’m just not sure I’m ready to date. Harper from our home was nice - oddly enough, I liked her, but she was into killing and keeping her boyfriends so that wouldn’t have worked out. Think I’m just not mature enough to have a bond with someone like that. I might not ever feel mature enough.” There was the question of marriage and children and things like that, but he shrugged yet again, pretty content where he was now in life. At least that’s what he told himself anyway. He was okay with living vicariously through Dean, Sam and Castiel. “Charlie is so adorable, you’re lucky. I can’t wait to see the pictures.” He pulled a pack of bubblegum from his shirt pocket and offered a stick to Dean before he took one himself. “You think you’re getting married in September?” he asked. “Could it happen sooner or later than that?” "Sometimes I overdo it at the Taproom. It gets quiet and I've got this nice big kitchen at my disposal, so I'll whip up some crazy shit. Scott loves trying out my creations, so it all works out." He turned to look at Jack with a raised brow over his comments about dating and Harper. "First off, she was a crazy bitch. The majority of chicks are not that insane. I mean, they can be. But…" His thumb tapped against the wheel and he tried to figure out what to say. "Okay, well, if you don't feel ready, then you're not ready. It's not a big deal." Dean shrugged it off, not wanting Jack to feel uncomfortable. He passed on the gum and turned into the parking lot for the axe place. "Definitely later, not sooner. I guess I should check with Lisa on how things are going with the plans. I left most of it up to her." “I liked your creations too,” Jack turned to look at Dean “Have you ever thought about opening a place of your own? Like a foodtruck maybe, or something on the side?” Dean would sometimes make something new and different and watch you while you tried it, an expectant look on his face at the compliment he hoped to receive, or at least he used to. In the Bunker before life got really bad. He knew Dean didn’t exactly like to rock the boat, and he understood that completely, but it was just a thought, and maybe a compliment to how good his things were. “Harper was nice when she wasn’t going psycho on us, and I can handle a crazy girl like - that crazy better than someone who is normal, right? I dunno. I don’t know how life is supposed to go for me. Naked people freak me out, necromancer girls are hot - I don’t know what I think about dating another male.” He was just weird. He knew he was, he also knew he had the potential to be horrible, and he didn’t want that either. It was just a lot to think about. He blew a bubble and and let it pop. He was kind of fascinated by bubblegum, more so the bubbles you could make with it. “Do you know if you’re going to have a big wedding or a small one? If she does decide to have it later, Charlie might be walking by then and can throw flowers. That would be cute.” "My own place?" Dean questioned, never having thought about it before. "No, but now that you mention it, a food truck might be something to look into. That's a good idea, thanks." When Jack said that naked girls freaked him out and necromancer girls were hot, Dean almost went off the road. "Okay, first off, it's completely okay if naked girls freak you out. Second, necromancer girls are not hot and you should stay as far away from them as possible. Third, nobody knows how life is going to go for them. The beauty of Madison is that you get the chance to have a life you never would back home." He pulled into a parking spot and killed the engine, turning to face Jack. "I wasn't going to say anything, because I don't know where you come from exactly, but I think it needs to be said." Dean inhaled a deep breath and reached out to place a firm hand on Jack's shoulder. "I fucked up, and I'm sorry. I was a complete dick to you, and I wasn't patient enough. It's no excuse, but I had a lot going on at once and I just snapped. It wasn't right, and you didn't deserve it. You are every bit a Winchester, and I'm sorry I made you feel otherwise." He didn't want a chick flick moment or anything like that, so he exited the car and went over to give Jack a hug. "I'm really glad you're here, and I hope you can find a life worth living." He placed his arm around Jack and walked with him into the building. "Probably a small thing. I forgot the name of the place. I think it's some kind of garden or whatever the fuck." Jack nodded thoughtfully at Dean and then shrugged a little bit. He knew most guys didn’t disappear at the sight of cleavage or the thought of a lapdance, and he knew he was strange for it, but it was nice of Dean to try to spare his feelings and say otherwise. He was about to say that maybe he needed to explore naked people on the internet before he tried to confront the real thing. That just sounded like an odd thing to say, so he shut his mouth. Maybe Harper had used a spell on him or a used a trick of some kind, but there was no way for him to deny that he wouldn’t have minded kissing her, or that he wasn’t intimidated by anything that could have happened in her apartment. It might not have been limited to her though, there might be other girls that had that effect on him. Maybe not. As far as he was concerned he had a long time to figure those things out, and he hoped Sam, Dean and Castiel would be around to help him sometimes. When Dean turned towards him after he parked, Jack sat up a little straighter and turned to face Dean too. Jack could feel his eyes start to well up, but he turned his face forward and tried to blink through it. He hadn’t expected Dean to ever say anything like that to him, not ever as Dean was never really the type for emotional stuff often, but that was exactly what Jack needed to hear and who he needed to hear it from. His whole body felt lighter, like a huge weight he had been carrying around was being lifted. Jack knew he would never feel completely free of it, because he’d never forgive himself for anything he’d done, but hearing this was what he needed. “Don’t be sorry. I’m just -,” he took a deep breath and he couldn’t actually speak. “Thank you. For saying that. For feeling it.” A single tear slipped as soon as Dean got out of the car, and Jack tried to compose himself as he got out of the car to walk in with Dean, but when he felt Dean’s arm go around him in a hug, Jack was nearly done for, but he breathed through it and buried his face for a few seconds against Dean’s shoulder. “A garden something? Huh,” Jack repeated, and smiled up at Dean keeping up small talk as they went in. “I never knew the name of the place at all. I just wish we could bring our own axes. My neighbor gave me this really cool suit of armor and the knight came with this super heavy battle axe. Eh, it’s probably too long to throw anyway.” Without the stress of having to save the world, Dean was much more capable of understanding Jack, and being able to accept his differences. If the kid didn’t feel comfortable around naked chicks and boobs, he wasn’t going to push it on him. His fingers ran through Jack’s hair in a comforting caress and he held the embrace longer than usual. “Yup, a garden. Outside wedding. I’m really hoping it doesn’t rain, cause that would totally suck.” He turned to look at the other in awe and gave him a playful shove. “Dude, you have a suit of armor completely with a battle axe, and you didn’t tell me?!? You better show me when I bring you back to your place.” |
