WHO: Liam Stewart and OPEN
WHAT: Shopping
WHEN: This evening
WHERE: Walmart
WARNINGS: TBD, probably not
STATUS: Open/Ongoing

Liam hadn't done speed dating, of course, because he was already in a relationship. A stupid sort of epic one that had him completely committed to her - something that had nothing to do with her abilities. Even when she'd tried to compel him to forget, it hadn't really worked, which was one of the things that convinced Liam that his relationship with Ruby was absolutely the real deal.

If he hadn't been in a relationship, though, he definitely would have gone. He loved the idea of it, even if it was just for making friends. He could use some more friends here.

Madison Valley seemed to be in one of its downtimes between weirdness now, and Liam was just enjoying that fact and trying to relax. Right now he was at Walmart, with basically a cart full of snacks and fresh fruit. Did he need it all? Nope. But he wanted it and it was stuff that he couldn't get back home.

He headed towards the checkout and noticed someone waiting in line who only had a few things.

"You can go ahead of me, who knows how long it's going to take to check all this stuff out."

Geralt at Walmart. If anyone knew how weird that situation was they'd laugh themselves sick. Weirder still was what was in his cart.

A cube of Diet Coke cans.
A dozen four packs of LED bulbs.
Seven rolls of duct tape.
A 10 pack of mens boxers.
A 5 gallon bucket.
And a goldfish complete with small aquarium set up.

He turned a look to the young man that came up to the line, looked him up and down then looked him dead in the eyes.

"As gracious as that offer seems, I was here first,"

"Uh," he started, pretty sure that wasn't the case. After all, Liam wasn't going to cut in line - he didn't do that. Whatever. He'd let it be. He wasn't one of those guys who was naturally aggressive, like this guy seemed to be.

"Okay, then."

He was quiet for a few moments, looking at his phone and the network as he waited in line.

"Er...you like fish?"

He was trying to be nice.

The person at the register was paying with coins. Coins! In this world, Geralt knew that was annoying. And there were still two people in front of him.

He looked into the aquarium with the bug eyed fish in the baggy. "It is for my girlfriend's daughter. She just arrived. I thought it would be something to help her settle in."

Honestly, Liam didn't understand why anyone would pay with something other than a card. It was so much easier and you didn't have to hunt through your bag for it, slowing down the line. Thankfully, he wasn't a cashier and didn't have to deal with people like that.

"A fish?" He would have thought more a stuffed animal, or a cuddly pet like a puppy or a kitten. But maybe she had allergies. He wasn't going to judge.

"That's nice of you."

"I considered one of those little fuzzy rodents with no tails, but it bit the employee and sent her to the hospital for something called a tetanus shot." Geralt shrugged. "Fish do not bite."

Geralt glanced at the young man's cart. "Are you a being that survives on nothing but sweets?"

"A hamster? Or a gerbil? Yeah, they're cute but they can definitely be mean too." He'd had one when he was a little kid. You could pet them at least...but he was correct in that they didn't bite.

"Uh, no." I just...kind of went shopping for sweet things tonight. They were hard to come by in my world and I'm just making up for lost time."

"I don't know." Anything beyond cat, dog, or horse meant little to Geralt. "It didn't have a tail. I suggested that they feed the vicious little bastard to a snake." That hadn't gone over well, especially with the mother of a child that had been nearby.

The Witcher nodded at the man's answer. "Ice cream. We did not have that back home."

"Yeah, same. We didn't have electricity after the infrastructure collapsed so we didn't have anything cold. Very few things fresh. We mostly ate out of dented cans without labels."

It hadn't been fun, that was for sure, but it had kept the alive.

"I heard that those little gerbil things eat their own kids."

All modern things were new to Geralt since he was more familiar with what they'd just been through than now, but he wasn't going to share that.

"Nekkars eat their young when the population of their hives gets too big. I assume it is the same for the gerbils."

The Coin Lady finally finished and the next customer moved up. This one seemed to be going well, at least, and the person in front of Geralt loaded their items onto the conveyor belt.

Then...

"Oh my god I forgot something!" The person in front of Geralt forced their way back through the line. "I'll only be a minute." He took off at a run before Geralt could say anything.

"Or they're just evil. I haven't figured that out yet."

As patient and as kind as Liam was, he couldn't help his expression when the person in front of Geralt had to go find something else. Why were people so clueless?? He felt a bit annoyed at all of it, but really, he wasn't in any hurry.

"Hopefully they will only be a minute?" And not fifteen or twenty and come back with an entirely new cart full of stuff?

Geralt scowled. It wasn't a pleasant look, and if it were anywhere but a Walmart, it might even be intimidating.

The clerk finished with the last customer then began ringing up the items on the belt that belonged to Missing Person. Geralt's hand clenched as if it were itching for a sword.

"If they aren't back soon I will pay for all their stuff and keep it."

Liam was quickly realizing that he was a far more relaxed sort of person than this guy. That was okay, though. It took all kinds.

"Hopefully he will be back soon. If not, I guess you could do that."

If the cashier would let him.

Oh, the cashier would let him. Geralt would see to that.

As the stuff was rung up, he started putting his own items on the belt. Except for the fish. That would be weird. Just as the cashier rang up the last of Missing Guy's items, he showed back up, out of breath and dripping apologies.

Geralt stood in his way and glared down at the guy. "You made us wait. Now you'll wait." No, he wasn't going to move. "The world does not revolve around you and what you think you need. Manners are not optional in public settings. Exercise them as if your life depends on it."

The guy went pale as he looked up into Geralt's scarred face then nodded. The Witcher let him pass, but stared while the dude paid for his stuff. As he was leaving, and the cashier began ringing up Geralt's stuff, the Witcher had one last thing to say.

"And use your turn signals."

Liam was glad when Missing Guy returned, and checked out. He didn't think the guy in front of him would physically attack him, but to be honest he wasn't really sure. And it was good to just have the situation over. Liam had faced violence in his life, but he really didn't like it. Like, at all.

He had to smother a laugh at the 'turn signals' comment, which was such a non sequitur, but was still somehow absolutely appropriate.

"Well, glad that's over," he said, smiling weakly at the guy. This trip to the store had certainly been more interesting than he'd expected.

Geralt just grumbled as the cashier finished ringing up his stuff. "Gonna start an aquarium? Gonna need some fish."

The Witcher looked the employee dead in the eyes as he held up the plastic bag with the goldfish in it. The cashier went a little pale.

"Oh." He gulped. "That'll be $52.36."

Geralt handed over three twenties which the cashier took as if Geralt might bite his hand. Quickly made change then handed it back. "Thankyouhaveaniceday."

Geralt grunted again, took his bags then glanced to the guy behind him. "See you."

Yeah, Liam was glad that was over. He was pretty sure it was the most nerve-wracking Walmart check-out he'd ever had. At least it didn't end in violence, which he wasn't sure about the whole time.

"See you," he waved, moving up and getting ready to pay for his own stuff.
