People like her were looked down upon. Gypsies. Tinkers. Whatever word they chose, the Romani people didn't belong anywhere. Add to that her gift for telling fortunes and precognition and Pamela was doubly cursed. The only thing that spared her from the cleansing fires, bought her pity from her fellow man was her blindness. And she used it to her advantage.
On any given day, she would set herself up on a small three legged stool. A ragtag satchel held almost everything she owned. A deck of playing cards, the obligatory crystal ball, a pendulum carved from local limestone, and candles. Madam Pamela would be open for business in the town market. Her senses alerted her to the approach of anyone who might fiercely disapprove of her trade. Everything would be popped back into the bag and she would become the blind beggar woman complete with walking staff. Pamela was proud of her tricks.
Today promised nice weather, so she set up her wares in the corner of market that populated by merchants just as amused by her scheme as she was. Once she was ready, she opened her senses to the people in the square. When she found a good mark, a smile spread across her face and she waited for them to walk by. When they did...
