It'd started out as such a good day. His ribs had finally stopped hurting every time he exerted himself, for one thing. For another, the bruise on his face was largely gone and what was still there was a sickly shade of yellow-green -- and that was okay because that meant it was almost healed, thank God. He was finally getting back to the Josh he'd been before the attack.
And then one of the scheduled sit-alongs -- which were a pain in the ass half the time to begin with -- had turned out to be Greg.
Cemetery Greg, he of the failed date and humiliating assault. Because of course that was how things were going to play out.
Everything had been both a blur and crystal clear at the same time. He'd done what he could in the situation -- they all had -- and he was trying to hold out hope that they'd be saved. But a concussion and a head wound that was tacky with drying blood had started killing that hope pretty quickly. He was a realist, and the reality was that people might not be coming out of this alive.
And then there was a commotion, Linda falling out of her chair, and oh damn it an allergic reaction was just the freakin' cherry on top of things --
-- and then, suddenly, he was no longer sitting on the floor of the dispatch center. Confusion quickly overrode the fear, which meant an adrenaline crash was going to be incoming, and all he could do was step off to clear the sidewalk so he didn't get in the way. Leaning against a wall, he looked around and tried to figure out what was going on.
