Who: Nick and Mia What: a proposal Where: the Titanic first class room When: the first night that it set sail Warnings: low Status: closed/g-doc
The thing about being stabbed for Nick is that it gave him time to think. Maybe too much time. But he realized after losing his child with Mia, Logan, and even Mia for a short time that he didn’t want to spend anymore time without proposing. They didn’t need to get married next weekend, or anything, but Nick wanted a family and he wanted it with Mia.
He had planned on a private proposal in his tiny house, but when he realized they could enter a portal for the Titanic, he decided why not in one of their first class rooms? Nick quadruple checked that this was the first night and they had no chance of drowning.
With the ring in his pocket, Nick breathed out a sigh and walked to her front door. He’d been staying with her since the stabbing, and while he wasn’t 100%, he was in much better shape than when it happened.
Mia wasn’t sure what you wore to a cruise ship from the early 1900s. Well, she vaguely did since she wasn’t a complete idiot, but it wasn’t like she owned a lot of Edwardian dresses in her closet. With a little bit of help she ended up with a dress she hoped would pass and not have everyone staring at her all night. She did her make up and her hair and finished by the time she heard Nick at the front door.
She opened the door and smiled at him. “Hey.” Mia even had on some jewelry which she didn’t often wear every day considering how much she needed to move around freely. “What do you think?” She took a step back and turned a little one way than the other. “I won’t scandalize the passengers too much?”
Nick looked at what Mia wore and whistled his approval. He’d opted for a tux. “You look great. Really. If they’re scandalized they can take it up with me.” Personally he thought she looked absolutely gorgeous. “I’m so lucky to have such an amazing date.” He held out his arm, so they could walk to the portal.
“So, I did get us a room for the night. I figured we could eat, dance…I could sneak more food.” And somewhere in there ask her to marry him.
The whistle drew a smile from Mia. Had it been someone other than Nick they’d have probably gotten a switch kick to the shin, but with Nick it made her happy. “You standing up to a bunch of rich people from the 1910s is something I kind of want to see. Almost makes me want to cause trouble.” Her eyes held a glint of playfulness to them. She wouldn’t actually. She knew Nick as still healing and they both had enough drama in their life.
“A room?” She looked at him as they headed toward the Bonnie Belle where the portal had shown up. “That sounds nice.” She hadn’t even thought of that as an option, but when would they have this kind of opportunity again? Never, probably. “I can always pretend I’m pregnant to sneak more food.” Which was a comment that spoke volumes of how far she’d come with Nick.
“I’ll charm them to death. They won’t know what to do.” Yes, Nick only kind of killed, but he could charm most people. “By the end they’ll forget they were scandalized by your outfit.
“Yeah, I thought it might be a nice break after everything.” Between his being stabbed and Oliver’s being sent home, Nick wanted a romantic night with Mia.
When they got on the ship, the concierge showed them to their room. Once the door was closed, Nick wrapped his arms around Mia’s waist and rested his chin lightly on her head.
“I love you.”
If anyone could charm someone to death, it was Nick, though Mia didn’t say that. Instead, she followed his lead into the portal and onto the ship. She had never been on a cruise before so this was new for her. The only ships she had ever been on were ones going to Lian Yu and none of those were cruise-worthy. It definitely felt like a dream almost as they walked through the hallways. It was weird to think that in a couple of days this would all end up underwater. Mia decided to push that depressing thought from her mind as they walked into their room.
She was looking around when Nick wrapped his arms around her. Her eyes closed and she smiled. “I love you too.” This had once been a hard thing to say to just about anyone and now it felt normal to say to Nick. She leaned into him a little. “Everything here looks so impressive.”
Nick couldn’t think of a better moment to propose. While he could kneel, the idea of lowering himself to one knee and then trying to get back up sounded like a big hassle. Plus, would Mia care? Probably not.
So, he pulled out the ring box and simply said, “Mia, would you marry me? I want to spend my life here with you.” Nick kissed her cheek and pulled out the simple diamond ring he’d purchased for her.
Mia was stunned. She had not seen that coming at all and then she realized that while she felt a twinge of panic, it was nothing compared to the panic she had felt when Nick had told her he loved her and then passed out. Then she had pretended like it never happened and she didn’t have the urge to do that now.
She looked at him with wide eyes and her hands slightly trembling. “Are you sure?” She didn’t mean for it to slip out, but it did. Like she needed to make sure he wasn’t making a mistake.
The fact Mia didn’t freak out spoke about how far she’d come with Nick in the last year. He kissed her softly.
“Yeah. After the stabbing I realized I’d be an idiot if I didn’t propose. You’re who I want in this crazy town.” He hugged her and then looked her straight in her eyes. “I am positive. I love you.” There wouldn’t be anyone else for Nick in Madison Valley, not while both he and Mia lived here.
There was the flash of thought ‘I wish you could say forever,’ but Mia realized realistically Nick couldn't promise that. Neither of them could. Damn the Dome.
Uncharacteristically Mia felt her eyes get misty and despite having the intentions to say ‘yes’ out loud, somehow all she ended up being able to do was nod several times as she tried not to have an overly cliche moment. She tried again to talk and, nope, she was going to probably make a stupid sound instead so she just nodded again.
Nick didn’t care if she said anything once she nodded her head. He wrapped her in a hug. If he could promise forever, he would, but how cruel would that be for both of them?
“I’m not positive the ring will fit, so we may need to get it resized for you.” Nick had guessed at his girlfriend’s ring size. He kissed her and started to slide the ring on her finger.
She was able to recover a little once Nick started talking more. She looked down as he slid the ring on her finger and smiled. Nick could have gotten all types of rings and she imagined that back home he might have gone for something flashier with someone else and yet the ring he chose for her was very her which made her like it all the more.
The ring was a little snug. Nick had been close which was impressive. She didn’t think she’d be able to do the same in return.
He let out a breath and finally found her words. “I don’t think I ever thought I’d be doing this… but now I can’t imagine not doing it with you.”
Nick knew Mia didn’t like flashy and so he’d never get her flashy. Nor would he go Karl’s route with ‘No Matter What’ because in this town that felt cruel. So he went for a ring that seemed like something Mia would like and not get in the way.
“We’ll get it resized for you.” He wanted it to fit a little better, but not fall off her finger. “I didn’t think I’d ever do this, but with you? It feels right and perfect.” Nick kissed Mia’s cheek and then kissed her hand.
“And I don’t want to rush to the next stage. I want to enjoy being your fiance and I’m not quite ready to move out yet.” While he spent many nights at Mia’s, he had to get used to being further from the Pack all of the time. Because no way could they survive in Nick’s tiny house.
His explanation of how he wanted to take things slow eased Mia’s mind a little more. She nodded. “I don’t want to rush this either.” She had a feeling she’d already get overwhelmed when asked details about the wedding. She had overheard enough of those conversations while bartending to know people liked to ask for every minute detail sometimes.
Mia took another look at the ring before she wrapped her arms around Nick’s neck and leaned in close, nuzzling her nose against his. “I’m happy.” She said it barely above a whisper.
Nick didn’t care if they did a backyard wedding with her friends and the Pack, as long as they got married and had enough food. Food felt important to Nick. “And we can do a small wedding or hell a backyard thing when we’re ready.” No reason to panic or stress out either of them. At the nose nuzzling, Nick returned it. “I’m happy too,” he whispered back to his beautiful fiancee.
