Who: Alec and Mary What: A wild child appears When: Feb 12 Where: Alec's apartment Rating: low (a lil bit of making out before a kid shows up)
Mary was nervous. Obviously, this wasn’t her first time, but it felt as if it carried the same weight. Since starting to date, Alec and Mary kept their physical activities to, at most, a PG-13 level. While they occasionally slept over at each other’s homes, it was nothing of the naked variety. They kissed, they cuddled, and held hands. It was cute. Alec didn’t push for more, waiting on Mary to take the lead in this situation, and the blond appreciated his patience with her.
But, as February dawned, Mary felt as if she was potentially ready for the next step. Plus, the most coveted day for lover’s was this month: Valentine’s Day. It seemed fitting that their first time together would take place around it. Obviously, it wasn’t because Mary actually was a fan of the holiday, but more so, it felt as if it had a bit more meaning now that she had someone to enjoy it with.
The two both agreed it would be best if it happened at Alec’s place since Mary was still living with the angels. After a shift at The Electric Lady, Mary went home to shower and change before making her way to Alec’s apartment. She might have invested in a few frilly undergarments for the occasion and, despite deep breath and plenty of mental pep talks, Mary still felt self-conscious in the clothes even if they were beneath her jeans and blouse.
She could slay a demon, but this was making her nervous. It was ironic. Mary shook it off and knocked on his door.
Did Alec want to sleep with Mary? Hell yes. Had he wanted to for basically ever? Also hell yes. In fact, anyone from back home might have wanted to do some tests on Alec to see if he was ill or not himself considering it was so out of character. Of course, helping people would have been out of character for him too before he had met Max so it seemed like there were people in his life that had the ability to change him. Thankfully those changes were for the better.
He had showered too and made sure his apartment was clear. He even wore a collared shirt despite the urge to just answer the door in a towel. He wasn’t nervous about doing the deed, but he was nervous about doing something to ruin the night or saying something and having her walk away in a huff - that had definitely happened to him a bunch of times.
When the knock came, he forced himself to count to three before he opened the door so he wouldn’t look entirely desperate. He smiled instantly when he saw her. “Hi.” Was he already getting excited to see her? Maybe just a little. Thankfully not embarrassingly so already. He took a step back to let her in. “How was work?”
Not meeting Mary in a towel was probably a good idea. Not that she would have left in a huff, but there is a good chance her face might have burnt off from blushing. Instead, she noted his collared shirt and was impressed. He made an effort to dress up and Mary appreciated it. Not that she wouldn’t have slept with him in just a t-shirt, but the extra step was noted. She gave him a bright smile in greeting and stepped inside.
“You clean up well,” Mary teased, reaching out to briefly touch the collar of the shirt. “Work was okay. At least there was plenty of caffeine to appease the masses so I didn’t have to call in the calvary this time around.”
And they both knew she meant Alec. “What about you? Anything exciting happen?” Besides what they were probably going to get into tonight.
He smiled at the ‘clean up’ comment and yes, yes he did look proud about it. While he might already have a very healthy ego, it was always good to hear that Mary shared the same opinion.
“Fixed a few things around town for people.” He was pretty sure at least two of them were broken on purpose so he had to fix them, but he wasn’t going to complain - those women usually tipped really well too. “Happy I don’t have to fix anything else for the night.”
His hands wrapped around the small of her waist and he pulled her in to kiss her. It wasn’t entirely demanding, but it was the kind of kiss where the heat grew the longer you kissed. Eventually Alec pulled away enough to speak, his eyes dipping briefly to her lips before looking back at her. “Maybe more than just a little excited about tonight.” He smiled just a little.
-
Mary figured most of his customers were probably women and she couldn’t blame them for intentionally breaking things just to have him come by. Alec was attractive and he was a flirt. In fact, it was one reason why Mary had kept him at arm’s length for so long. She wasn’t sure if he was capable of being with just one woman, but she had to admit, experiencing a world in which he and her were together had changed her perception. While that experience in the other Madison was a nightmare, it had probably provided the spark for the two of them to get together.
Mary wrapped her arms around his neck as he drew her closer, placing a lingering, heated kiss upon her lips. Very few things in this world could give Mary butterflies or a shiver down her spine, but that kiss was one of them. She returned the kiss until Alec pulled away. At the look, Mary’s cheeks burned and she reached down to take his hand, tugging him towards the bedroom.
“That makes two of us,” Mary returned. She was trembling as she took a seat on the edge of his bed, pulling him down beside her. She leaned in to press another kiss to his lips softly before slowly deeping it.
Alec could maybe see the merit now in waiting for sex. The intensity of his want for her made him feel like his entire skin was on fire. Maybe, just maybe, it was okay to wait sometimes. Maybe.
He reached up behind his head to tug on his shirt and pull it off over his head. He dropped the shirt on the ground before joining her at the edge of the bed and letting her pull him down. As one had held him up to keep him from crushing her as they kissed, his only hand roamed down the side of her body like he was slowly mapping her.
But when the sound of the piano in his living room started to play a classical song and he paused entirely. He pulled back from the kiss to look at her like ‘is this you?’ which was a stupid silent question and yet, that was the first question. He didn’t exactly think a robber was going to sit down and play Chopin.
Mary’s fingers trailed his bare skin, taking in every inch with curiosity and wonder. Yes, Mary was glad they had waited. It felt as if the moment was much more special. She returned the kiss hungrily; the feel of his touch sending electric shivers down her spine.
She shifted, moving to tug on the buttons of her blouse, but as her fingers grazed the first one, the sound of a piano playing broke the silence. Mary’s fingers froze as Alec pulled back from the kiss and the two just looked at each other. He seemed to be silently asking if it was her, but Mary shook her head. Whoever that was, it had nothing to do with Mary. She didn’t know any demons that would sit down and play piano instead of wrecking havoc.
“Looks like we have an uninvited guest,” Mary whispered, moving to sit up. “And from the look you just gave me, I’d say you have no clue who it could be either.”
Her heart pounded in her chest, but now it was for a completely different reason.
Alec was going to be seriously pissed at whoever was responsible for stopping something he’d been looking forward to for literal months. While he’d see Mary with her bra on, he still hadn’t even seen her naked and really, that was a crime in and of itself. Still, he wasn’t about to ignore it even if there was a particularly excited part of his body who was yelling at him to do so. They didn’t need to get murdered while in the middle of having sex.
He didn’t bother putting his shirt back on as he climbed off the bed and headed for the living room. Whoever it was knew how to play the piano. What that said about whoever was in his apartment, he wasn’t sure, but it said something.
And then suddenly he was standing there looking dumbly at a girl who was maybe a teenager playing on the piano. She looked up when she seemed to sense them. “Mom? Dad? Why are we back in the apartment?”
Alec probably shouldn’t have said it, but the word “Fuck” left his mouth.
Also he was now very aware of how ‘at attention’ he still was. He ended up grabbing the potted plant some old lady had given him in lew of payment and held it in front of him like it was a normal thing to do with a potted plant.
With her shirt still undone, Mary pushed herself off the bed and followed after Alec. Though she was inept when it came to music, even she could tell that whoever was playing was extremely talented. Who would break in just to play piano? It didn’t make any sense to Mary and she was sure it made no sense to Alec either. Wouldn’t the person just attack them?
Mary was so lost in thought that she almost didn’t notice Alec come to an abrupt stop in front of her and barely managed to avoid running into him. She stepped out from behind him and she too was struck by the young woman in front of them.
Mom? Dad?
Mary felt her stomach twist just as Alec said fuck. She barely registered that he took a potted plant and placed it in front of him, clearly to obstruct the view that his daughter shouldn’t see. Mary blushed, suddenly remembering her shirt was open and, with shaky hands, she hurriedly buttoned it up…but not well.
She glanced over at Alec before asking, rather dumbfounded. “We’re your mom and dad?”
Alec was semi-aware that Mary was now trying to re-button her shirt. He was also annoyed it was taking longer than he’d like for his situation to calm down. Really, the Dome had to have something out to get him at this point.
He cleared his throat while wetting his lips, taking a moment to glance to Mary. “...sometimes the Dome likes to send us po – kids from the future.” He decided not to say ‘possible’ out loud since that would probably such to hear for whoever was standing in front of them.
Turning back to the girl, he tried to look her over assessingly. His eyes went to the back of her neck and was happy to see there was no barcode there. “You’re going to have to help us out a little kid. What’s your name? I’m sure you can tell by how young we are, we’re a little different from the ones you know.”
The girl turned on the bench. “I’m Max.”
Alec let out a small breath. He had been scared to hear her say Rachel. Having a kid with Lorna named Rachel was enough for him. At least Max wasn’t a complete mindfuck, though he was sure Max would make fun of him forever if she ever knew he named a kid after her.
The girl didn’t seem too freaked out, probably because she grew up in the Dome and the Dome was weird. Instead, she just said, “I’m hungry.”
Mary had been lucky enough to not experience future kids. This was her first one and she could only hypothesize it was because she was finally with someone. Obviously, she was brought into the fold now being with Alec. Of course, Mary never pictured having children outside of Sam and Dean. Though being here she realized she’d already changed her fate. As long as John never showed up, there was a good chance Mary would never be a Winchester. She’d never really be Dean and Sam’s mom. It was a hell of a pill to swallow, but seeing the girl on the bench, the daughter she had with Alec, it made it so much easier. It proved she could build a new life here and Alec and her were happy. As startled as she was, she also felt relief and happiness too.
“This would be my first time with a potential child…”Mary trailed off quietly, looking over at Alec. “But as weird as this whole thing is for all of us, I’m glad it’s with you.”
Mary was also relieved that Alec had obviously taken the lead on naming Max. Mary didn’t know how she would have felt if the child would have been named after her mom or grandmother. There was still so much about losing them that she didn’t want to think about. It still stung knowing she hadn’t been able to save them.
“How about we get you something to eat?” Mary offered, holding out her hand for the young girl to take. Maybe moving Max to the kitchen would give Alec a little more time to gain control.
Alec was grateful for the comment of reprieve because he took the opportunity to get himself situated and when he returned to the kitchen he was even wearing a shirt again, though he went with a t-shirt this time that was a little more ‘him’. Mary’s words of ‘I’m glad it’s with you’ was still ringing in his ears - he never thought about having kids save the last time this happened, but he didn’t hate the way that sentence made him feel.
Dean was going to love this.
He sent a text to Lorna before finally arriving in the kitchen. He had a lot of snacks available considering he could eat just about anything and his metabolism would take care of it. Popcorn and chips were his obvious favourite, though there were fruits and vegetables in the fridge.
“So, uh -” His hand slipped into his pockets. “You play the piano, huh?”
Max nodded as she grabbed an apple from the fridge like she was used to getting food on her own. “You taught me. I like it.” She smiled. “Just like you and mom taught me how to fight.”
“Of course we did.” Alec rubbed his face with his hand before looking back at the girl. “Hey, uh, do you happen to have a sister?”
The confused look on the girl’s face at least confirmed that answer for Alec.
Mary watched as the two interacted with one another. She was curious to hear the answers to the sister-question. Why a sister? Why wouldn’t he have just said sibling? Unless…
It dawned on Mary that Alex probably had other “future” kids with different women in Madison Valley. There might have been a slight pang of jealousy at the thought, but Mary pushed it aside. Who knew how many different futures existed? It was impossible for her to control. For anyone to control. She couldn’t be upset with Alec or anyone for what Madison Valley decided to pull on them.
She was pleased the girl took an apple instead of asking for chips or popcorn, both snacks Alec had.
Max didn’t answer the question, just looked at Alec with a confused expression on her face. Obviously, there were no sisters, just Max. At least, in that future.
Mary looked over at him with a small smile playing on her lips. “Apparently, she’s an only child. Of course, I’m curious now. How did you figure she’d have a sister?”
“The last time kids showed up I had a kid with Lorna… named Rachel. It was awkward.” He pulled out his phone to glance again, but he hadn’t heard back from her yet. Maybe that was a good sign. It would definitely be more awkward now and for the very first time in his life Alec was actually worried about what Mary would think about it. He was worried he’d hurt her.
Clearing his throat, he looked over at Max. “So, uh… you close to your step-brothers Sam and Dean?” This was meant as a real question, but also to try and find out what reality she was from.
The girl shrugged which reminded Alec of himself. He suddenly hoped she took more after Mary. “They’re more like uncles because they’re so old.”
Alec couldn’t help the bark of a laugh he gave. He did manage to follow it up with a quick, “Sorry.”
It was as Mary suspected; Alec had a future kid with another person in town. While it bothered Mary a little (she was human after all), she also couldn’t blame Alec for it or Lorna. It wasn’t as if anyone had any control over what the Dome did or what future would occur. There could be a future where her and Alec weren’t together and all Mary had was Dean and Sam.
As if feeling his apprehension about what he’d just admitted, Mary reached out and touched his arm briefly. She wasn’t mad.
At the girl’s response about Mary’s sons, even Mary had to bite her lip to keep from laughing. Of course they would be much older than Max. They’d both come here as adults and no doubt had kids of their own in the reality that Max was from. Still, Mary poked him in the shoulder when he laughed.
“She’s not wrong,” Mary replied honestly. “I mean technically they are older than me too. It was probably just less awkward to refer to them as uncles.” How Madison managed to fuck with time so badly, Mary would never know.
“Do they have any children? Probably like cousins to you?” Mary asked, wondering if the Sam from her world was the same one with DJ right now in Madison Valley.
Max nodded. “John and Charlie.” She looked at both of them and Alec had a very telling ‘I want more information’ expression on his face so she supplied. “John is uncle Sammy’s and Charlie’s uncle Dean’s. We’re good friends.”
Alec blinked. “Well, that’s something.” He knew good friends with kids didn’t mean that barbecues weren’t tense or there weren’t still fights. Or maybe this was the land of Kumbaya and they all got along well.
He looked to Mary. “You want to tell them? They might have those boys show up.”
“Boy and girl.” Max looked at her dad and when Alec looked confused, she added. “Charlie’s a girl.”
“Well, sounds like everyone gets along…” Mary trailed off. Relief flooded through Mary when Max said the kids were all ‘good friends.’ Of course, much like Alec, she also knew that didn’t mean the tension between the adults just evaporated. Knowing their lives, it still existed and was just as prevalent as it was right now. Sincerely, Mary hoped not; she liked to think that eventually Dean and Alec found a way to get along. They didn’t have to be friends, but just mutual acceptance would be miles above what they had now at this point.
When Max corrected her dad that Charlie was a girl, Mary couldn’t help, but chuckle. She had that smarty pants attitude that her father possessed. It was cute to see Alec having to deal with a small piece of himself.
“I’ll text them and let them know that they might get a visit from Charlie and John.” Obviously the mention of John rattled her, but she was trying to keep any unease to herself. Of course Sam or Dean would name one of their children after their father. It was only fitting. It was just something she would have to become used to; she would never be that Mary. Not really.
He nodded and the Alec fell into silence as his mind mulled things over. "Hey, uh, you want to go in the living room and watch tv? Or play piano or whatever?"
Max looked between them. "You two want to talk."
Alec felt the need to facepalm, but instead he nodded. "That obvious, huh? But yeah."
Max didn't seem to mind, thankfully, as she exited while still eating her snack.
When. Alec turned to talk to Mary, he wondered if Max had better hearing like he did, but it was too late now. "We should, uh, probably get some stuff for her. Like clothes and blankets? And also figure out where she's going to stay -- Are you okay?"
Mary smiled to herself when Max deduced the situation herself and headed back into the living room without a fuss. Once the young woman was gone, Mary’s expression sombered and she folded her arms upon her chest as she turned to Alec. Yes, they had things to figure out.
“Getting there,” Mary replied honestly. “This is my first future child so it’s a bit of a process.” But honestly, despite all of that, she was glad to have had the child with Alec. Again, it made her feel more confident in their potential future, like she could be something other than Mary Winchester even if part of also felt a little sad about that too.
“But I’ll be fine. If you want she can stay with me. Of course, I don’t know if Cas and Balthazar might have a child too…” Mary trailed off. “Either way, we can go to the Walmart, let her pick out some things for herself at least.”
“What about you? Are you okay?” Mary reached out and gently touched his arm.
“It doesn’t get a whole lot easier, but it helps if the kid isn’t a raving psycho.” It seemed like they had dodged that bullet with Max. Alec was of the opinion that was solely Mary’s doing since Alec was pretty sure he would mess up a child on his own.
“We’ll figure it out.” He meant about where Max would stay. “If it’s too crowded there, you two could stay here if you want.” He’d even sleep on the couch if Mary and Max wanted to sleep in the bed.
“I’m okay… I mean, it’s kind of weird we have a kid considering we haven’t, you know, yet and I’m sure Dean will be thrilled, but Max seems like a good kid.” He grinned. “And I could think of worst people to have a kid with.” It helped knowing that this wouldn’t be permanent. Even if maybe he wanted a kid later, he wasn’t ready for one right now long term. “And just for the record, Lorna and I have never been like, a thing.”
“Speaking from experience?” Mary asked curiously. If Max was sane, Mary couldn’t solely take the credit for it. She came from a household of hunters and that did not exactly lend itself to providing a stable, normal environment.
At his offer that the two of them could stay with him, Mary smiled. “I appreciate it. I feel like Max would probably like it better if we could all stay together too.” Then again, maybe Max would be fine with her parents living separate lives. She seemed pretty cool, calm, and collected. Then again, growing up under the Dome, how could you not grow used to all the craziness.
“I’m sure he’ll be ecstatic, yeah,” Mary replied, shaking her head. “But I could think of worse people to have a kid with too.” Dean may not like Alec, but the Alec Mary knew wasn’t a bad guy. She knew if children ever did become part of the equation, he would be there to help and support her.
Mary waved off his words about Lorna. “I might have been jealous for a few seconds back there, but I realized you can’t control any of this and neither can I. If that is a future, then it’s a future. I mean look at me and John. You’re with me even though you know about my future with John and me being a mother to Dean and Sam. I’m not in the position to be upset about anything. You’ve been dealing with future kids since the moment you met me and my sons.”
“... I never really thought of it like that.” But when she put it that way, well, it was kind of weird. It wasn’t really any weirder as it had been before, but it was weirder to acknowledge. Alec didn’t know Mary’s older self or any of the gritty details of the future and he was fine with that. As far as he was concerned, this Mary and that Mary were different. Madison had started or changed a timeline and he was selfishly okay with that.
He moved, closing the distance between them, and pulled her in for a tight hug. Alec wasn’t good with words, but he learned to express his feelings in small gestures and this was one of those times. After a moment where he held her, he pulled back, kissing her temple, before pulling back more. “Okay, let’s, uh, go grab some stuff at Walmart or whatever and figure all this out.”
Until Max showed up, Mary hadn’t thought about it that way either, but now, there was no denying it. The Mary that was here in Madison Valley would always be a different version than the mom Sam and Dean knew. It was impossible for her to reconcile any of it. She could only hope her sons could still love her even if she never ended up being the mom they knew.
Mary hugged Alec tight in return, resting her head upon his shoulder before he pulled back. She smiled as he placed a kiss on her temple. It was probably a sweeter gesture than a normal kiss.
