So this time I decided to look up information on the holiday I knew nothing about before I came here to comment and/or ask questions.
Thanksgiving.
Ok, so I get the sentiment behind the title, which seems very nice and a good thing to celebrate. HOWEVER...
Why do we celebrate this? According to my research it isn't proven that this event actually happened, and even if it did it would have been wildly different than what is portrayed. These "pilgrims" (an odd name for people who were escaping religious prosecution but I'll get to that) were starving and freezing because they were in an environment they were entirely unprepared for so it was more likely that they approached the indigenous people with buckled hats in hand.
Continuing with the "pilgrims"...why are we even continuing to celebrate them and their possibly false narrative of gratitude when we know they became huge hypocrites by turning against the indigenous people who helped them? They turned on them when they wouldn't subscribe to the invaders' religion so that was an excuse to belittle and betray them. The "pilgrims" came here to escape the same treatment...and would be more appropriately be called "refugees"...so they decide to treat another race the same way they were treated? And we CELEBRATE this?
These holidays are problematic, and I'm almost afraid to research Christmas.
