There had been a mild and exceptionally light sprinkle of rain the previous afternoon, but it was perfect. The sun had come out and warmed up the ground just enough but not dried it out enough to deter the earthworms from coming up out of the dirt and basking. Lilly knew that she shouldn't be running around, she knew that the adults in the house worried about her, but none of them really understood. Lilly herself didn't even truly understand the pull the out of doors seemed to have on her. Victoria had understood, and up to a certain point Mama had as well, but neither of them were in Madison and thus the wild child was left to her own devices.
With the help of the adults, Lilly had begun to practice speaking and comprehension. She had seen the leaps and bounds Brie had been taking in developing and Lilly had felt envious enough to want to follow her young stepsister's example. This included wearing weather appropriate clothing and today was no exception. That morning, Lilly had dressed herself: pajamas, a small hooded jacket and a pair of bright purple rubber boots with yellow dots on them. Her hair was still wild (it was the bane of many hairbrushes), but baby steps were important.
Squelching through the mud and soggy grass, Lilly reached out a hand, trailing it along the top part of a headstone, keen gaze watching the ground for signs of squishy wriggly life. Stopping in her trek, she squatted down and scooped up a large fat worm, holding it between a grubby thumb and forefinger up to her face and smiled, voice soft. "Hi..."
