Hiccup had made a rather quiet entrance to Madison Valley, which wasn't something he was used to doing. But the fact that he didn't speak the language had limited the number of people he could talk to. He was working on fixing that - learning English from anyone who could teach him - but learning a language took time and it seemed like English was particularly hard.
He'd managed to work out something on his phone where he talked into the device in his language and the phone spoke it back to them in theirs. It was painfully slow, but until he learned more English, it was the only way he had to communicate.
He felt kind of lonely here, without Astrid or any of his friends, and he hoped maybe learning the language would help. He'd thrown himself into it completely, anyway. At least it kept his mind off the things he missed.
Today he was walking down Main Street, just looking around him at the shops and the huge variety of things they sold. Most of it, he didn't even know what it was. A few things looked familiar - he passed a forge that had swords and such in the window, for instance. But most of it was completely foreign to hi, which only made him feel lonelier and more out of place.
Looking carefully at his phone to try to translate a sign on a window, he didn't see the person coming at him and slammed into them. Skinny and with only one good leg, it knocked him to the ground, even though he leapt up quickly and turned back to his phone to speak into it. It creaked out "Pardon me" in a monotone to the person he ran into, but he hoped his facial expression would fill in what it couldn't.
