Ok. So the Lucifer here wasn’t REALLY her father, but he was still the King of Hell...on vacation...and she was still Sabrina Spellman, daughter of Satan. They’d talked. He said she could call him Dad. And sure, when your dad was the Devil himself you kinda expect certain...things...to come from him. But hosting orgies? Orgies that cute boys and her guardian attend? EW! What was next?!
She knew she was indulging in self-pity. She didn’t really care. Sabrina told herself that she was allowed to pout for a little while, but then she had to get over it. Disappointment was ok. Whiny self-importance was not. She met herself halfway and agreed to meet Sam at the chocolate place he recommended. But if he tells her that he went to the orgy…
She walked into the chocolate place wearing the mini-skirt and sweater combo she preferred. Normally she would have changed when she’d gotten home, but she hadn’t been home for long. Not after learning that Bjorn had gone to Dad’s party, too. Nope! She wasn’t going to think about it! Tightening her lips she glanced around for Sam.
***
Sam had come today just to try to cheer up a girl named Sabrina. He didn't know her at all but he could sympathize with not being happy and he was hoping he could just make her smile. He knew this would be the only time they would meet so he went dressed in jeans and a t-shirt that proudly proclaimed chocolate was a healing food, and walked into the shop. It was only a little bit behind Sabrina when he saw her looking around for him and he chuckled.
"Sabrina?", He asked it quietly as the door closed. Sam was a not really tall but very short. Four foot two, really short, boy.
He who was muscled nonetheless and looked almost as lean as a runner might. This was what happened when you got thrown into the middle of an alien war and had to learn how to run for your life. Sam, surprisingly, had found he was good at that part. So there he was wearing his nice jeans and his T-shirt and grinning just a little, his long duffle bag slung behind him hanging off his shoulders as usual.
He didn't go anywhere without it ever. When you got used to being ambushed by aliens, you started carrying around something that could take on the aliens, no matter where you went. No matter how long he had been in Madison he always carried the gun. So there he was grinning as he waited for Sabrina to turn around. She did look really nice in that mini skirt.
***
Sabrina turned around in a way that made the pleats of her skirt flare a little then smiled. Wow. Yeah he was short. She wasn’t tall by any stretch of the imagination, but she was a good head taller than him. Not that it was a big deal. It was just surprising. But it also meant it was just a blip before she lifted her smile honestly. “Yeah. Sam, right? Hi.” Her shoulders hunched up. “Sorry for the melodrama online. I’m having a day.”
A day that wasn’t his fault. Sabrina reminded herself of that. She needed to not be a bitch. “So what’s good here?”
***
“Hey, it’s cool. Nothing wrong with losing it now and then around here. This place could make anyone lose their cool.”
He grinned at her openly. She made no comments about the shortness, which was a benefit in her favor right off the bat. He gestured toward the counter and menu as he stepped up next to her.
“Are we going for obscene amounts of chocolate? Or obscene amounts of chocolate pleasure? If the former, I recommend The Death By Chocolate lava cake. If the latter, I recommend the Chocolate Ecstacy Shake, invented by a previous one of us visitors.”
***
Sabrina hummed in thought. That was a difficult choice. She wanted to feel better about the situation she found herself in. And the fact that her dad was hosting orgies. Ew. So maybe the pleasure part was out.
“Death by Chocolate cake,” she said decisively. “With a hot mocha.” That ought to give her the fix she needed.
***
“Sounds like a plan. Come on. I’ll buy.”
And he led the way to the counter, grinning at her, not at all bothered by buying chocolate for a new person. She was cute, and interesting, and he hoped he could make her smile.
At the counter, it was a simple matter to order two of the cakes, a mocha for her, and a soda for himself. Turning back to her, he nodded.
“It’s not too busy, so we can sit anywhere, I guess? And I hope this helps.”
***
“What?” she said in open surprise. “But…” That was unexpected. Nice. Dare she say, sweet even? She watched him place the order with her arms crossed over her chest and a wry smirk pulling her lips to one side. Was this guy for real?
She reached out to help carry stuff. “Thanks,” she said then looked into the seating area for a place that struck her fancy. Since they had their pick a table in the middle of everything would work for her.
Once they were seated she took a big bite of cake before saying anything. First there was the hum of absolute appreciation then an actual smile. “So do you do this for everyone that’s having a hard time?”
***
Sitting opposite her, Sam grinned. He inhaled some of his drink as he watched her, chuckling. But he was right after her in sampling the cake. And he mmmmmed as he tasted it. Damn, he did love this stuff.
“Nah. I try to help people, but life gets in the way a lot. When I can, I do help, yeah.” He nodded. He liked to help people. He knew what it felt like to be alone, and lost, and hurt, or even just not happy. His early life had been like that a lot. And he hated seeing anyone else live that.
“Besides, I happened to know the best chocolate place in town. How could I resist answering and getting some chocolate to boot?”
He barely resisted adding that it did not hurt that she was cute.
Barely.
***
Sabrina chuckled after stuffing more chocolate lava yumminess into her mouth. “Opportunistic. I can respect that.” She pointed her spoon at the cake. “This is definitely worth a bit of volunteering. Good call.” Her smile became a little more serious. “This is exactly what I need.”
She poked at the cake with her spoon. “Do you have anyone here? Friends or family?”
***
He chuckled and ate some more himself, nodding with her assessment, then sobering as spoke again, nodding softly. At her words, he began to get an idea of what was going on, or so he thought.
“A couple of people I know a little. One person that I care about as a friend, but even them I am not super close with. You?”
***
Sabrina shook her head as she began making little designs in the pooled chocolate on her plate with her spoon. “Not really. I mean, a version of my dad is here, but he isn’t my dad.” Then she quickly explained. “Lucifer. My version is a whole lot worse. I met the one here. He seems ok.” She frowned. “I guess. If by ok you mean he holds orgies that your guardian and,” cute, “guys you meet go to and you’ll never go to even when you are of age because it’s your freaking dad.”
She shoved chocolate into her mouth to keep from rambling anymore.
***
Sam blinked, then nodded. Okay, wow. And he listened as she talked, smiling sadly. She sounded sad.
He stared at that last part, then winced. “Damn. I am sorry. That sucks. Sounds like you have not had an easy time here.” He had heard and seen worse, sure, but it still sucked when you got disappointed in someone. Even if you had not known them long. Still.
He lifted his spoon and waggled it at her.
“This calls for extra chocolate.”
***
Sabrina shrugged a shoulder. “In the grand scheme of things it’s not that bad. I’ve definitely gone through worse back home.” Like learning that her dad actually is the Dark Lord. “And I’m pretty sure that other people have it worse now.” Klaus. He definitely had it worse. That thought put her crap into perspective...but she wasn’t going to say no to more chocolate.
When Sam came back she was able to have something resembling a real smile on her face. “You didn’t freak out. Pretty sure most people would freak out to learn my dad is Lucifer.”
***
He nodded. “Good. I mean, that it is not that bad. Not that you went through bad things at home.” He shut up to stop his babbling and listened.
Sam set down a second, larger plate with chocolate brownie and ice cream and two spoons.
“Oh, well, I am used to this place. It throws weird stuff at us all the time. I’ve been to other planets, gender swapped, aged up and down, and met gods.” He grinned at her.
“It makes it easier to deal with Kings of Hel and all that.”
***
She ate more of her lava cake while Sam was gone. It really was good, and she should do justice by it instead of poking at it, and letting it go to waste. The brownie and ice cream amused her. “My hips are going to be angry at me by the time this is over.”
She took a chunk of brownie then continued. “I was deaf through this last thing and worried about aliens so I get the weirdness.” Her eyes lit up with amusement. “But swapping genders?”
***
“Not if you work it off! Go running, or work out.” He nods. Grinning at her, he dug into his lava cake as well. He did love it.
He winces. “That sucks, But yes. Gender swaps and body swaps happen now and then here. Sometimes, it's just one person, sometimes, its whole swaths of people.”
He chuckles.
“It was weird, but once I got used to it, it was okay.”
***
“At least none of it seems deadly or permanent.” She made a play for a chunk of chocolate that Sam was going for just to be cheeky. “Just...inconvenient.”
She could deal with inconvenient. Now that she was getting an idea of what to expect she might be a bit more prepared. Her father’s excess and decadence might be something that would take more getting used to.
“So, oh wise one, how long have you been here?”
***
He laughed and pinged the chocolate to her fork, just because. Sam smiled as he nodded. “Most last 3 to 7 days.” He grinned again as he sat back, stealing another brownie piece.
“This time? Just a few weeks? Last time, about six months or so.”
He grinned. “It's a good place despite how things are.”
***
“Last time?” Her brows shot up in surprise. “You’ve been here more than once? How does that happen? Isn’t that annoying? Or scary? I heard when you go back it’s right to the point when you left, but still.” She made a face. “You’re here. Get used to it. Go back. Live your life then suddenly you’re back and all ‘Well son of a bitch. Not THIS place again.’”
This time she went for a spoonful of ice cream.
***
“Yep.” And he was about to say then nodded as she got it right.”That is about it , but… for me it was, oh thank god, this place again.” He chuckled as he shook his head.
“I like this place. I used to have more friends here, sure, but… no one is shooting at me here. Which is a win, in my book.” He grinned at her as he stole some ice cream as well.
“What do you do back home?”
***
“Shooting at you?” Sabrina was surprised but not as much as other people might. Not after everything she’d been through. “Who would shoot at you and why? You’re like the nicest of nice guys.” Hey, she called them like she saw them.
Ah, the inevitable question. She got a sneaky smile on her face as she answered without hesitation. “I’m a half witch whose father is the Dark Lord just trying to be a high school student.” Then she snorted. “Well. A witch high school.”
***
He chuckled. “I was caught in the middle of an alien war. Aliens invaded trying to kill other aliens who turned out to be nice and so I took some offence to it, helped stop them, which involved me shooting an alien space gun and getting shot at a lot And then well, the actual war was going on for a while.”
He sighs. “Probably still is.”
He grinned at her, not at all nonplussed.
“Family can be rough, I know. I hope it gets better for you, easier.” He nodded.
***
“Aliens! Wow!” Sabrina wasn’t faking how impressed she was. All she had to deal with were scheming bitches, ex-boyfriends, a father who wanted her on his throne and the other princes of Hell who didn’t. Typical day in the life of a witch where she came from. Really. But not.
She lowered her eyes with a smile on her face that was faded around the edges. “They aren’t all bad. My aunts. They pretty much raised me. My cousin Ambrose.” As her mind pulled up their faces her smile lifted. “I miss them.”
***
“I’m sorry. Maybe they will come here, or you’ll get to go home.” He nodded to her, smiling softly. He hoped one of those would happen. She seemed nice and like she deserved good things.
He speared a piece of brownie and lifted it toward her. “More chocolate, this time to remember them with.” His grin was silly, but concern was there behind it.
***
She shrugged. “I’ll be alright. If I weren’t it would be an insult to how they raised me.” The smile that came through held a bit of surprise. It was true. Her aunts had done their best by her and that was saying a lot. If she didn’t give it her all, live strong and independent it would be her not living up to everything they’d taught her.
Her own grin appeared to match Sam’s. “To my aunts,” she said before she leaned forward to nip the brownie as offered. After she swallowed she smiled at him once more. “Thanks, Sam. This was a big help.”
***
Sam smiled warmly. “There you go. You’ll kick ass here with that attitude.” Sam nodded, firmly. He had confidence, with the spirit she was showing, she could make it. He knew she was strong, already. That much was clear.
“You’re welcome, Sabrina. Anytime. We all need friends at some point, yeah?” He snagged another piece of brownie and popped it into his mouth, grinning. This was nice. And it distracted him from everything, which was also nice.
“We should hang out again.”
***
The brownies were swiftly disappearing so she skewered herself another bite before they were gone all together. “Well, I’m glad that you’re one of the first friends I made.” She reached out to tap her spoon against Sam’s. “That’d be great.”
He was nice. Cute. Great smile. Yeah, Sabrina could definitely hang out with him again.
