Who: Everyone
What: GSA Groundhog's Day Retro Dance
Where: Old Market on Main
When: Saturday from 4pm-midnight
Warnings: let me know
Status: party post

The hall was decked out in a mish-mash of 70s, 80s, and 90s decor - disco balls, neon lights, flannel tablecloths, etc. Nico put together a playlist of music from those three decades, which was pulsing loudly through the room. At one end was a buffet table, full of party food, including plenty of options for those with diet restrictions. Nearby were tables and chairs for people to use while eating. Another corner was set up with bright, inflatable furniture where people could kick back and relax if they didn't feel like dancing. A nearby shelf held some games that were popular in each of the decades being celebrated.

A photo booth was set up in another corner with plenty of period appropriate props. There was something for everyone at this dance.

Thanks to Brooke's keen fashion sense, Max was decked out in one of the best looking outfits she'd ever worn in her life. Well, Max thought so anyway. She'd never owned something so nice and fashionable, especially when it came to going to a dance. That was another thing Max never did back home. Socializing was definitely not Max's strong point and a dance was a place that involved it the most. However, she'd come a long way since starting to hang around Chloe. The other young woman brought out the best in her and made her more confident...or helped her discovery her own confidence.

Along with that dress, she had the best looking date too. Chloe was beside her, the two were currently located at the buffet table. You couldn't dance on an empty stomach. Max had opted to just snap some photos with her phone and keep the camera at home so that she could share that dance with Chloe later. She was still shy about it and was certain that she would be falling all over her date in the process, but she still wanted to even if Chloe laughed at her afterwards.

"So, what do you want to do after this?" Max asked, popping another chip in her mouth as she looked over at Chloe.

Chloe wasn't really into dances, but Max convinced her to go. Not only because it was Max but because it was also the GSA dance. She wasn't in high school anymore and definitely wasn't part of the club, but she always supported them in any way she can.

So she went with Max, who was wearing an outfit that looked simply amazing. Chloe wasn't much for fashion but she couldn't help but look at Max every chance she got. Even when they were grabbing food, she still couldn't help but think of how amazing her girlfriend looked right now.

"I know what I want to do when we get home..." she said suggestively. But as much as she would love to kiss Max all night and more, they could always do that later. "But seriously, we should dance after we eat."

Max was glad she managed to convince Chloe to go. She knew the fact that it was for the GSA was a key factor in her decision. Obviously, Max knew the biggest reason had to do with herself. Neither one of them were big on dances, but Max wanted to go. Even if she ended up stepping all over Chloe's feet, at least they were get to be together and that was what mattered the most.

Chloe's suggestive comment caused Max to blush. Then again, it was Chloe and maybe she should have expected it. Chloe never seemed to be afraid of anything, especially speaking her mind. "Oh really..." Max trailed off, arching a brow playfully at her girlfriend. "You might be saying something different if I end up stepping all over your feet when we dance."

Chloe had been a bit surprise that it was Max's idea to go. Neither cared much for dances, but Max more so. She was always the least social of the two and didn't mind spending time by herself. Chloe liked being alone too, but she tended to get bored and so went out more often.

She grinned when she saw Max blush, thinking she looked so cute when she got all flustered like that. And maybe she kind of enjoyed that fact that she was the one who could do that to her. But there would be plenty of time for that later.

"Maybe. But I'm kind of used to it. And besides, I just want to dance with you, even if you do step all over me," she added teasingly. She did wanted to dance with Max but she just had to add that last bit in.

Max surprised herself with wanting to go, but part of her wanted to try as many new experiences as possible while Chloe was round. Last month had shown her own easy it was for this place to take people away and she didn't want to lose a moment she had with Chloe given how things could turn out back home. But Max didn't want to think about that if she could help it.

"And even if I am a nerd," Max added, polishing off her last chip. She knew Chloe liked to tease her about that sort of thing, but she was use to it and didn't mind it too much. Max was a nerd, mostly for photography, but a nerd nevertheless.

Nico did not mind the distraction this event was providing for her. She still had yet to fully process things that happened back home, so she put all of her energy toward making playlists and preparing for the dance. She had a lot to be thankful for, like getting to dance with her girlfriend if she wanted to.

For now, though she standing off to the side just kind of people watching. She was glad to be back, even if she was feeling a little anti-social.

Like Nico, Rose was still trying to process the events from her trip back home. While it had ended up okay, how the events unfolded leading up to it, was a lot to take in. Sydney and Adrian being parents? Rose never saw it coming. To be engaged to Dimitri? Maybe she had considered it at some point, but for it to become a reality? No, she wasn't positive that it ever would have. All of them had been through so much, especially Sydney and Adrian, that it was hard to imagine they had made it to an end where they were all okay somehow. Not perfect, but okay.

Those events had led to Rose making a career change upon her return to Madison Valley. In the midst of losing so many people, there was an opening at the Den and Rose, knowing Kenny, had inquired about a job in security. She'd landed it and now, on top of guarding Lissa, she was working at the Den in a position that was more fitting for her skill set. It was something to be grateful for even if there was a big part of Rose who wished she hadn't come back here. She could have been with Dimitri and she would always chose that, Unfortunately, she didn't have a choice. This place wanted her here.

Coming to the dance was a distraction Rose desperately needed and so she'd put together her best eighties outfit and went. She found herself standing off to the side with a young woman she recognized as someone who had also returned here around the same time as herself. She also thought the woman was the one who had set up the playlists, but she could have been mistaken. In any case, Rose being Rose, decided to just go for it.

"Hey, you put together the playlists, right?"

There were things Nico was not ready to talk about. The playlists? Those were a safe topic, and she didn't mind talking about that.

"I did. It was kind of fun," she admitted. She did enjoy creating the playlists, and not just because they were a nice distraction. "The 90s music was easiest to put together."

There were things Rose was not ready to talk about either concerning her experience back home. She'd taken to wearing Dimitri's engagement ring around her neck instead of on her finger. There was no point in wearing it on her finger when the person she was spoken for was not in Madison Valley and might not ever be. That was a topic for a different night though. She wasn't even sure how to talk to Lissa about it.

At Nico's words, Rose nodded. "Are you a fan of the 90's music the most or was it that the songs just kind of fit better together than other decades?"

Ruby had come to the party with Cole. She had agreed because he had seemed kind of into it and because she knew she needed to try and learn what it meant to be normal. She hadn't been normal in over six years. She also didn't want Cole to think she was some delicate flower because she wasn't. However all her bravado went out the window when she got to the party. There were so many people there and so many adults.

She found a place where she could have her back against the wall and stood. She didn't have a costume on since she just arrived several hours ago to Madison Valley and so she knew she stood out even more. Her eyes kept going back to the table with board games on them. She used to love board games.

Ruby sighed. Maybe she forgot what it was to be normal after all.

Being back in this town where she'd spent six years, where she'd grown and matured, and being sixteen again was the weirdest thing that ever happened to Kate and that was saying a lot given who and what she was. She still wasn't the type of person who was going to let circumstances get her down though and being in Madison Valley was definitely better than being at home and going to that stupid leadership conference.

It was also a lot better than dealing with the mean girls at school and the ever-widening gulf between her and her twin. A lot of the friends she'd had before were either much older than her now or were gone, so Kate decided she may as well stop by the dance and hopefully meet some new people.

She hadn't bothered dressing up, wearing her typical jeans and t-shirt with her long hair pulled back in a pony tail. Full plate in hand, she wandered over to the tables to find a place to sit and spotted someone who looked about as uncomfortable as she felt. "Hey," she said. "Want to play something while I eat?"

Ruby took the girl in first, her eyes moving over her the way The League taught her to assess a threat. It helped that the girl seemed to be around her age and she told herself, partially for Cole's sake, to relax and not be so paranoid. It wasn't going to help anyone if she suspected everybody in the town of wanting her dead or worse.

Her next gaze went to the food. For once in a very long time, Ruby was full. She had eaten half a pizza on her own along with wings for the first time in over six years. It was still a novelty to see so much food on a plate, though, and she stared at it for a moment before she realized that the girl had spoken.

Ruby looked back to the girl and blinked. "What?" She paused and tried to recall what the girl said. "Oh. Uh..." She caught sight of Cole for a second behind the girl and nodded. "Yeah, sure. I don't know if I remember how to play any of them, but yeah."

There was a vague predatory air around Kate that people who were sensitive to the supernatural might pick up. It was one of those werewolf things. They generally had to avoid animals because their scent would drive them crazy. Her dog, Atalanta, was one of the only ones who didn't freak out and that was because they'd raised her from a puppy.

"We'll do something easy," she said. "Scrabble? That's just making words."

Weiss never really liked the parties back home, especially the ones her father made her attend. Mostly because it wasn't for fun but to maintain appearances. The only dance she sort of enjoyed was the one at Beacon awhile ago.

Here, she did enjoy them and of course she was going to go to the GSA dance. She had picked a fashionable 90's outfit and headed there, inviting Ruby and Nora along. Hopefully both or at least just one would come. To her surprise, Ruby was the first one she bumped into.

"Hey, glad you came," she greeted her friend with a smile. "I wasn't sure you would considering..." she trailed off. Both knew she meant how worried Ruby was about her uncle. Hell, Weiss herself was a bit worried about him. She hoped things would be a bit better but she had a feeling it was just getting worse.

When Weiss initially invited Ruby to the dance, Ruby was unsure if she would attend. Dances, even the one at Beacon, were not really her "thing," but there was also the dire situation with her Uncle too. The latter was the biggest factor in Ruby's decision and she was still unsure if she had made the right choice as she made her way to the dance that night. She'd actually done her research this time and come up with something fashionable from the 80's time period. She couldn't see herself in the bell bottoms of the 70's.

Surprisingly, she ended up running into Weiss right away and she attempted a smile as her friend greeted her. "Honestly, I'm still wondering if I should have," Ruby admitted, frowning. "But I can't put my life completely on hold for Uncle Qrow either." She hoped that didn't sound selfish; she was worried about her Uncle. She knew Weiss was too. How could they not be given how much he was drinking lately? "You look great though Weiss." Not that it was surprising; Weiss always was fashionable.

Weiss was surprised but glad Ruby came, though she would've understood if she had decided not to. "It certainly wouldn't be fair to you. And I'm sure a couple hours to yourself wouldn't hurt." She did care for Qrow and she did worry about him, but Ruby deserved to have time to herself, even if it was at a dance. "Has his drinking gotten worse?" she asked, her voice low so only Ruby could hear.

"And thanks," she smiled a bit. "You don't look half bad yourself." Ruby actually looked great, which was a bit surprising since she wasn't all that into fashion.

"I know. I still feel guilty though." Knowing that she was having fun while Qrow was still reeling from the loss of Elsa didn't seem right somehow. Somehow, she felt like she should be miserable too and she was, but more so from worry. She'd like Elsa when she met her, but Ruby hadn't gotten to know the woman the way her Uncle did.

"It has..." Ruby trailed off quietly. She knew Weiss would know regardless of if she admitted it to her friend. Weiss knew Ruby better than anyone. She would know if Ruby even tried to make it seem like Qrow's drinking wasn't even close to how bad it actually was.

"I actually did my homework on it. Well, kind of," Ruby added with a small smile. "After seeing Nora at the New Year's party, I felt like I should try more for these decade things."

The retro theme of the dance pleased Elena since it meant she could dress in full late 90s grunge - wearing a pair of jeans with strategically ripped knees, a vintage band t-shirt, and a flannel shirt with a pair of Doc Martens. It wasn't really any different from the way she usually dressed.

After making sure that everything was going well, she went to find her date, and offered Brooke a smile. "Hey, sorry, looks like everything is going okay though, so I should be able to relax now."

Brooke was excited for the dance, but then again she was excited for any party/dance even more so if she could dress up. When she dressed up, she went big since for her it was a go big or go home type of thing. Never once had she gone the go home route in her life and she wasn’t about ready to start now. Max also looked good, thanks to her, which she was quite proud of how the outfit came out on the other girl. Brooke wanted to do something different and decided to go for an 80’s look, feeling it’d be slightly different than everyone else with their choice.

She had been going around socializing a bit, but when she noticed Elena heading in her direction, she turned her attention to the other woman. “Nothing to be sorry about,” she told her with a smile. “I’ve thrown enough parties in my life that the host behind it is usually kept quite busy,” and it was one of the many reasons she loved throwing them. “So if you need to rush off at all, I understand. But I will say you look good with your outfit choice.” Brooke complimented her with a smile before waving her hand slightly to the side. “Plus you did a great set up for this whole thing.”

Elena's cheeks warmed when Brooke complimented her outfit. She wasn't sure if she'd ever learn how to gracefully accept one. "Thanks," she said. "You look great too. The 80s were so weird fashion wise." It was fun to play dress up, but Elena hoped those styles never really came back because seriously what were those people thinking?

"Are you having fun so far? Everything okay?" She wasn't sure why she was so worried about it, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and there hadn't been any major catastrophes so far. Plus all of their previous events went well. "Did you eat yet?" She'd been so busy running around that she hadn't hit the buffet and knew she probably should.

Brooke smiled at the compliment since even though she was used to the compliments, it was always nice to hear it. Plus it was always nice to hear compliments around something you put together like an outfit rather than about how banging your body was, which while she was used to that one as well, she’d prefer the one about her skills. “They were, but I think it’s what makes that time a fun one to pick for dressing up in. So not something I’d wear on the daily, but once in a while? Why not?” Brooke couldn’t imagine wearing these types of clothes all the time. Yes, she’d made it work if that was the fashion, but still that wasn’t the point and they weren’t the fashion, thankfully.

“Of course, I’m having fun. You need to chill and take a deep breath in,” she told Elena with a small laugh. “You guys put together a great dance, everything looks great, and if you don’t chill, you’re going to stress yourself out. I’ve thrown my fair share of parties along with events so trust what you did and try not to overthink it or else you’ll lose your mind.” Brooke told her with a smile, but she also knew that wasn’t always easy to do. Yes, she learned how to be more laidback on her parties/events; however, she knew that wasn’t always the case on her end. “No, I haven’t. I’ve been doing the whole social thing. Want to go grab some food?” Brooke asked, nodding over towards where the food was.

Elliott had been more than happy to help Elena and get this place ready for the dance. Everything from the squishy chairs to the loud obnoxious colors (say no to day-go!) and the playlist were all fantastic. In a particularly good mood that evening, he had finally decided that it was time to find a job and had walked into the Electric Lady. Now he was a server along with a fill-in performer and surprise surprise one of his coworkers was pre-milk Shosanna. Definitely a small town.

Having found the perfect outfit, an homage to Don Johnson, simple and classic, Elliott watched everyone mingle. Having arrived with Amy, she had wandered off somewhere so he was left to his own devices... Which were to not get in the way and do the adult things like occasionally checking on the food table, throw some errant napkins away, crumb catch and make sure the photo props were readily available, simply happy to enjoy the vibe.

The Doctor was enjoying herself a lot. She liked parties in general, but she really liked parties that were there to help the community feel safe and exclusive. This sort of party made her feel warm inside and she just had to check it out. Clad in her usual attire, she was looking at the photo props with interest. She picked up a large yellow pair of glasses with no film and put them on. They were so big they barely stayed on her nose. Then she saw a bow tie - it brought back a lot of good memories. Suspenders were more her thing, though. Her eyes caught the sight of the various pride flags on little sticks and grinned, happy to see so many represented on the table.

Having given the gluten-free options at the snack table the sweep up (what was it about gluten-free that screamed "I make crumbs!!" anyways?) Elliott walked over to the photo booth area, he saw a familiar woman poking around the props, at least as far as familiar went when he only had a picture on the network to go by. Plus, who could forget someone simply named 'The Doctor'?

Stepping beside her, he looked at her new glasses and grinned. "Definitely you. I think it's a picture waiting to happen."

It took her a second to realized what he meant as she turned her head to look at him. Then she remembered - glasses! She broke out into a grin and then laughed. "I do like a good set of spectacles, even though I don't need it. And pictures. I've been really practicing my selfie game, as the kids say." Whether she was joking or not it was hard to tell, though she made a gesture to him. "Can't take a picture alone then, can I? Come on."
