It was rare for Veronica to leave her father's place these days. Keith was being patient with her, something she was grateful for, because even getting out of bed was a chore. It had been a month since the day her world came crashing down, a month since she lost the husband she barely got used to having, a month since she decided to hide away from the world. Time was mostly a blur that passed in a haze of alcohol and trashy reality television. She didn't have the will for much beyond that. Sure, she ate when her dad put food in front of her, but she rarely engaged in any sort of conversation and she ignored the text messages and voicemail messages that came through daily from her friends.
Veronica knew that everyone in her life was going to lose patience with her sooner rather than later. Part of her was tempted to run away, just go off the grid and start fresh. If she could find a way to erase her memories, she'd do it in a heartbeat. For more than a decade, she believed that losing Lilly was the worst thing that could ever happen. When her father was near death, she amended that. Neither of those things compared with the pain of losing Logan though. Especially when she blamed herself for his death. After all, that bomb was meant for her.
One of the only things that got her out the door was Pony and he was nudging her with his nose. She groaned, grabbed the bottle of water next to her bed and took a swig in an effort to clear the vodka induced cotton from her mouth, and shoved her feet into a pair of ratty sneakers. "Yeah, yeah, fine, we'll go out," she said, clipping on his leash before donning a hat and sunglasses against the bright California sunshine.
She stepped out the door and everything went dim. At first, she thought she was about to pass out. Then she realized that there was no sunshine, no sound of crashing waves, no scent of salt in the air. In fact, there was a building in front of her that wasn't usually there. Seeing it unleashed a flood of memories and she gasped out loud as she realized where she was.
Madison Valley. How long had she been gone? Likely not the years that she'd just lived through in Neptune, but the chilly grey weather didn't really give her a clue as to what time of year it was. She stood, staring at the building, ignoring Pony's low growl, wondering how the hell she was supposed to go back to her happily married life and raise her son after everything that she'd been through.
