Allison was glad that Katniss had agreed to come over while she made the arrowheads, because while she could do it herself and had before, it was a little easier with an extra set of hands, especially when pouring the molten metal that was used. When the knock at the door came, she opened up and gave gave her friend a smile before beckoning her in.
“I’m glad you made it,” she told her while shutting the door. “Do you want anything to drink, or should we skip straight to the arrow-making?”
***
“I’m fine right now,” Katniss said. She was curious about Allison’s process and how it differed from her own. The other girl had much more advanced technology available to her than Katniss had back in District Twelve and, since coming here, she hadn’t really needed to make her own weapons.
It still wasn’t easy for her to make friends and doing something like this made it a lot easier.

“Okay, cool.” Pausing to pull a scrunchie out of her pocket, Allison tugged her long dark hair back into a ponytail, then turned to lead the way to the work room where the equipment was set up.
“These molds were made specifically for arrowheads,” she explained as they walked and picked them up to show Katniss once they were inside. “I actually made them a few years ago, when my dad first started teaching me archery. He was an arms dealer, but I wasn’t really interested in guns, just bows.”
***
All the equipment was fascinating to Katniss and she spent a few minutes looking over it and trying to figure out what everything did even as she listened to Allison.
“You said you’re making these for your boyfriend?” she asked. “Was he into archery before or is it something you introduced him to?”
***
Allison set the molds into the machine, then looked back at Katniss. “Yeah, Chris. And nope - I actually introduced him to it not long after he first got here. I guess you could say that it’s sort of what brought us together originally? Anyway, I gave him a bow for his birthday, and I figured some handmade arrows would be a good Christmas present, you know?”
***
That sounded reasonable to Katniss though she was hardly an expert when it came to relationships. “Makes sense to me,” she said. “I never was very good at that sort of thing though.” Luckily, her relationships here had been understanding of that.
“You should bring him to play Archery Tag sometime,” she said.
***
“I might. That just seems like our group thing - I wasn’t ready to include him before but maybe I will now,” she said thoughtfully. She hadn’t been sure that things with Chris would ever last this long or go this far but she was truly happy, and she loved him.
“Anyway, come over here and I’ll show you the process.”
***
Their group would probably intimidate a newbie archer. It would be a good test for him though. Make sure he really was good enough for Allison.
Katniss walked over to watch as she made the arrowheads. The whole having girlfriends to talk about boys with was still pretty new to her. Not that she had any boys to talk about at the moment.
***
Allison walked her friend through the entire process, and even let her pour for one of the molds. An hour later, they were setting - which would take a while - and so she finally stepped back and stretched, then pushed a few dark strands of hair back from her face.
“Let’s head upstairs while we wait. These need a while to harden.”
***
“Thank you so much,” Katniss said, having found the entire process fascinating to watch and participate in. “And I know how well they work having seen you use them before.” The arrowheads Allison created were far more technologically advanced than anything Katniss had ever made or even used aside from when she’d been in the Capitol.
She followed Allison upstairs and went to wash her hands before doing anything else.
***
“There’s a tradition in my family, where whenever a hunter sort of ‘graduates’, they make their own silver bullet. I made a silver arrowhead,” she told Katniss as she followed her to the sink to do the same. “Doing that actually saved my friends’ lives,” Allison added after a moment as her smile faded. She hadn’t thought about that day in a long time, since it had been her own final one.
***
Katniss knew that Allison was getting a second chance here, much the same way that Prim was, and by the fading smile, suspected that in saving her friends’ lives, she’d lost her own. Given the choice, Katniss would have done the same. “I’m sure they appreciate that,” she said. “The things we all went through before coming here are so terrible.”
***
“They do. And it’s been...wow, almost two years now - for me, anyway.” Longer for the otheres. It was still strange, but she tried not to think about it too often. Shaking her head to banish the thoughts, Allison grabbed a couple bottles of water out of the fridge and held one out to Katniss.
“What do you want to do while we wait?”
***
“Watch a movie?” Katniss suggested. It was a good activity to do that didn’t require much conversation and there were still plenty she hadn’t seen.
***
“Sure, that works,” she replied, before smiling and leading her friend into the living room. All in all, it was a quiet day - but a good one.
