Layla had wanted to explore through the portal, since Australia was definitely not anywhere she'd ever get to visit in her lifetime, but she was definitely nervous about traveling to the past. She'd chosen not to wear her hijab this time, not wanting to draw any additional attention to her since the color of her skin would do that just fine. There was no telling what Melbourne would be like in 1928 and maybe she was being uncharitable or too negative in assuming it would be a risk to be even more 'other', Layla decided to just go with what she was comfortable with.
It took a good hour of walking around before she started to really relax. She'd put on a modest dress, which fit in rather well with the time period, and her hair was down, though she felt naked without her hijab. Layla thought that was kind of amazing, that her point of view had shifted so much in such a relatively short period of time. Where she'd been so against wearing it at home, here she didn't like not wearing it. Her father would boast about it, but she tried not to think too much about it. Amaar was much better at getting her to really think about things, and she felt a lot freer without her dad breathing down her neck. Their parenting styles were much different and although Amaar wasn't ever going to be her father, he was in that role as her guardian.
She'd stopped in front of one of the storefronts, filled with all sorts of odds and ends. It was a pawn shop, she thought, so buying things wasn't quite on her agenda, but she could look. Someone came up next to her and she turned to offer an apologetic smile. "Sorry, am I in your way?"
