Art: Expecto Patronum! (Birthday Challenge)
Title: Expecto Patronum! (or: The Things that Make Lupin Happy)
Artist: Omni (aka rip_von_christ on lj)
Rating: G
Challenge: Remus' Birthday Challenge (though nothing really about birthdays in the art...but the BONUS FICLET has a birthday party reference); prompt: "patronus"
Characters/Pairing: Lupin, Harry, Ron, Hermione; (implied Lupin/Snape)
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters, just the scribbles (and writing).
Note: We are never given Lupin's patronus, to my knowledge. Here are several takes on what that patronus just might be...
Hermione's a bright one, she is. Remus, why would you have a raven patronus, eh? EH???

Hermione watched the silver raven flutter about the room, elegantly weaving in and out of the floating balloons and streamers. It was quite a surprise to see a raven of all things erupt from Lupin's wand. Harry and Ron didn't seem to think much of it, instantly losing interest and wandering off to get more cake.
There was just something about it that seemed familiar...as if it reminded her of someone. Someone graceful and dark and brooding. The patronus came to a stop on the table beside Professor Snape, who had been rudely sitting there the entire party, glaring at anyone who tried to sit near him. With a hitch in her breath, Hermione stared at the raven and Snape, the two looking at each other with mirrored movements. Finally Snape sneered and stood to walk away, the raven dissolving into nothing as he turned from it.
Darting a glance over at Lupin, Hermione saw him watching Snape through the fall of his grey-brown bangs. Things clicked perfectly into place in her mind, and she felt her heart twist in sympathy for Lupin. Thinking fast, she scurried over to Professor Snape and tacked an eager smile on her face.
"Professor, you haven't shown us your patronus. Everyone else has shown theirs, it's only fair..."
Snape looked suddenly paler, though she never knew such a thing were possible. He glanced sharply at Lupin, who was blushing just slightly and trying to look interested in a greeting card. Oddly enough, he also glanced back to his table, to where the raven had been, and his black eyes looked almost sad. That little ounce of emotion was shuttered away when he looked back at Hermione, meeting her gaze squarely.
"Regrettably, I've no time for party games. There are many duties to which I must now attend, for I've dallied too long already." He then looked back to Lupin, waiting for the werewolf to turn and face him before continuing. "Happy Birthday, Lupin."
Lupin smiled, and Hermione looked around, wondering how no one else could see, how no one else even seemed to notice...that he...
"Thank you, Severus. And thank you for coming. I know you're quite busy, and it was terribly selfish of me to keep you."
Snape's black eyes looked away, unable to meet Lupin's any longer. "Not at all."
Oh, God. Hermione could scream, she felt so frustrated. It wasn't as one-sided as Lupin and she had originally thought. Unfortunately, she was alone in this observation, as well. Perhaps Snape was trying to run because his patronus would also give him away... Yes, that must be it! But wait...he seemed to understand the significance of Lupin's patronus, so... Wait. Oh, no...no no no... Perhaps his patronus would reveal that there was someone else entirely.
Heart breaking along with Lupin's, Hermione watched Snape exit in a flutter of black cloak like raven's wings.
