Remus had just gotten back to Hogwarts from dropping Teddy off at Andromeda's when he heard the yells.

Remus drew his wand and sprinted toward the cries. There was a burst of laughter, and some very un-childlike profanity -

"What is going on here?"

Three Gryffindors, one a prefect, all old enough to know better, surrounded a sobbing Severus Prince. One of them dangled a wand out of reach while a second maintained a body bind. A third was directing a bottle of Mrs. Skowers' Heavy Duty Grease Remover for Kitchens to pour over Severus' hair.

"Finite Incantatum!" roared Remus.

Severus yanked free as the binding spell released and dashed behind Remus.

"Professor Lupin!" The one who had had Severus' wand turned a nasty green as he recognized his professor. "We were just - "

"Tormenting a younger student. No, don't try to weasel out of this!" Remus snatched Severus' wand away and handed it back to the first-year. "Fifty points from Gryffindor apiece, plus detention. You will also publicly apologize to Mr. Sna - Prince. Now back to your dorms!"

Severus did not speak until they had fled. "You defended me. Why?"

"Because I know better now," said Remus.
