"My condolences on your loss, Lupin."

The staff meeting had finished and the other teachers had left. Only Lupin, who had quietly refused all offers of assistance, remained at the scarred oak table.

"Thank you, Severus." The werewolf shrank his books and notes and reached for his cane. "Dora always spoke highly of you."

Snape had seen the late Mrs. Lupin mocking his nose to Potter and his little friends. "If you say so. How is your son?"

"Well enough," said Lupin. He shuffled to the window. "Our first spring without war. May it be the first of many."

"Indeed."
