The committee had really gone out of their way this year to make the annual Masquerade Ball an event to remember. Their theme this year was "Frost" (even though it was only the end of August), and they had done an absolutely brilliant job decorating the huge ballroom. The entry way was beautifully decorated with trees, as well as chairs for those who needed a rest. The rest of the ballroom was equally as beautiful, decorated in whites and soft blues, with candles hanging from a mirrored ceiling to look like starlight. The dining area held beautiful tables, as well as gorgeous ice sculptures, and makeshift chandeliers made out of frosted branches. It was beyond magical. In a corner of the dance floor, a small string ensemble gathered around a world renowned concert pianist to set the mood with soft waltzes and other such music.

There is a separate room that contains the items for the silent auction. There are several sculptures, some paintings from the local gallery, and some package trips to the spa.

Royce didn't roll in (ha) until the ball was well underway and this was, in a way, deliberately done. For one, he was one of those people who didn't mind a dramatic entrance when he could afford it. For another, it had never been in his habit to be the first in many gatherings as doing so will make him have to wait for his friends and how boring is that?

After his Rolls-Royce Phantom was taken away by valet, he strutted into the venue dressed as a hussar, a popular masquerade costume with thanks to a certain classic musical and he was not at all worried that he would find a duplicate. And if he did, he at least would be the better Raoul de Chagny than the other, the costume having been customized to highlight his good features such as his shoulders and his shape.

And though it was not in the "original costume", Royce couldn't bear to go without a mask, one that came straight from Venice at that. Boy knew how to use his money well.

After paying the coat keeper a visit to see who had availed of the ranch's 5% discount (and being surprised that as much as two people had done so), he finally immersed himself with the crowd to start to blend in. Not a minute would pass and he would already have a glass of champagne in hand, looking for a friend.

Normally, hearing that Thora dressed up for an occasion meant she left the mud-stained boots at home and did something other than her usual sloppy excuse of a bun for a hair style. The only time that was not the case was for the annual ball. She had been attending them since she was 16 because her mother's side of the family was a big benefactor. The only reason she looked forward to going was the fact that she was able to hang out with Caius, Luca and Royce while watching them get looked at by the woman. She, of course, was never one for the whole anonymous appeal with her outfits. Everyone knew who she was immediately when she started talking, so trying to be mysterious lasted until she opened her mouth. Still, the girl cleaned up exceptionally well when she needed to. Most of the people in her age group (which she was explained still included the high school kids even though she was 21) dressed like it was a high school dance. Sometimes, even the adult wore outfits that left the girl who had little clue about the current fashions scratching her head. But she was not here to judge. Entirely. She was here to mingle and find people to spend time with before getting dragged into glad-handing people or fixing something.

Of course, spotting the people she knew was never a hard task. Look for those who looked like their ensemble looked like it cost more than the entire event and it was a fair bet it was someone she knew. So, when she saw a rather stunningly-dressed man with a mask that she was sure had legitimate gold guilt paint on it, she watched him walk and turn to see what his hair color was. Lighter shade of brown and there was no dumb bimbo clinging to his arm- definitely wasn't Caius. Thora smirked to herself and walked over with a small smirk on her lips. "These balls always have constants- a few bad wardrobe choices, good food and my favorite Courtright showing up fashionably late."

With the mask over his face, it was a little harder to make out Royce's reaction but it was one of good cheer, with a smile on his face as he moved his champagne-holding hand to one side with a dramatic slight toss of his head and shoulders back. Not seen: him rolling his eyes because it just seemed to be the thing to do.

"Vous avez déjoué mon plan," said he in French before he offered his elbow to Thora, the one which did not have a jacket slung over it. "But it's always a relief to find a bright girl in the crowd. I thought my intentions would be misunderstood. You're certainly a sight for the bored, Thora."

Thora smirked when he replied and happily took his arm. "Mon apologie," she replied lightly before looking around at the room. His mask did a much better job at hiding his face- the point of a mask, to be sure. Still, she knew Royce too well, as he was more or less yet another person in the ever-growing number of extended family, to think he was actually displeased at her for knowing who he was in an instant. "Be warned, that is the extent of my party tricks until you need me to change the music and lighting scheme.," she added with a small laugh. She was all-too used to these events by now and it hardly bothered her that she was still not the perfect person at these gatherings. At least she always looked the part.

"Well I'm glad, I can't seem to figure out where Luca and the Hallorans wandered off to," she replied. "How have you been? I've seen some horses wandering around if you haven't spotted them."

"No, I haven't." And frankly, all pride for the ranch aside, Royce wasn't sure how he'd feel about seeing the horse costumes, exactly. Either he hadn't been back home long enough to figure out the trend, or, some people are just desperate to get on a horse. "How did they look like? Were they actually at least ingenious?" This last question, he sort of whispered as he leaned towards Thora in a manner that was almost conspiratorial. Royce couldn't help but put a smile on his face as if he and the girl were sharing an inside joke, too. "I must say, I'm a little disappointed you're not dressed as a unicorn."

He started to walk around the ball, making sure Thora matched up with his pace as he proceeded to survey the event. Royce does love parties, very much so.

"Some are tasteful," she answered. She figured it was more that people had been more interested in having something to dress as. She had only been to two other balls, as they were more geared for the adults of Newport, and she already had a hard time figuring out how to dress. She was sure some people really wanted to ride, but not that many. When he commented about her being a unicorn, Thora gave a small laugh. "Maybe next year, I just didn't want to steal the prizes from people," she replied with a grin. "After all, we both know I am pretty much fantastic."

Royce was a good deal taller than the girl, and she was glad to not be in heels, even with him walking slower for her little legs. Still, she was thankful. If nothing else, her feet were not sore. "No lovely date this year?" she asked as she looked around the room.

Royce simply shook his head. "I was waiting for you," he said because if you couldn't come out clean and say that your lovely date last year had since dumped you, you might as well be witty about your answer, right? "I knew you'd be dying to tell me about your latest escapade and-slash-or procurement. So here I am." Lifting his glass of champagne, he hailed a waiter who lifted a hand to him and started marching towards their direction. Thora just seemed naked without a glass on hand, Royce thought he ought to do something about that.

"So," he turned towards Thora, again. "What have you been up to this late?"

Thora smirked, pretty sure that was not the truth, but not saying anything about it. She would not have judged him for being left by someone. She was not exactly miss popular in school. She was scrawny, pimples and had a retainer. Hardly the homecoming queen. "Well of course I have to tell you all about it, who else would get such entertainment." She laughed and accepted the glass from the waiter as he approached. She was still not used to being able to drink at this function. She almost returned her ticket thinking they made a mistake- she did not have a very wild 21st year so far.

"Me? Work and school. My dad is annoyed that I can't stick to one major for my bachelor's. I want to do computer game design, but he has given me the eye about that a few times, so I think it's out of the question." She replied with a shrug, sipping the champagne. "How about yourself? Enjoying being back home again?"

"There's nothing quite like home," said Royce to her question. By then, they had wandered close enough to the long tables to see what was in store for them for dinner...or rather, in store for Royce, the late-comer. "Not even London with all her rich architecture could match to the homely delight of Newport," he turned to Thora and smiled as he said this.

"You, though," he raised his glass to his lips, "You should consider taking off for college. I know a couple of people who could help you. And the best part of it is that you won't have your dad breathing at your neck. What is it he's making you take now?" He sipped his champagne again, careful not to damage his mask.

Thora had wanted to travel. Her family had gone on plenty of trips throughout the country, but she did not find a place she liked better than Oregon. Sure, they stayed in the country, excluding some trips to Canada and Mexico. Still, she had to agree, there was nothing like that little beach town they were both born in. "Still, I'm sure there were more interesting things there than home."

When he mentioned studying elsewhere, Thora mused and sipped her champagne. She had thought about it. But the University of Oregon was such a good school. "It wouldn't matter, dad pays for my school and he'd see my declared major anyway." She shrugged and finally sipped her flute again. "Anything. He said business, but I want designing or engineering. Everyone has a degree in business and he didn't have me skip a grade just to settle on the same degree as everyone else."

"Well, sure but," Royce made an uncertain noise of sorts as he bopped his head left and right then shrugged. "After a while, those interesting things become common. All that history and culture...a two-hour trip to France isn't as exciting as it seems the second time around.

"Engineering sounds like it has a lot of promise," he went on to say while he hailed another waiter and surrendered his glass to his tray. "And I'm sure you'll do just fine with it. Would you do a friend a favour and dance with him? All this walking around is boring me and I should like to be seen spinning a beautiful lady like you." He nodded towards the dance floor as he did so.

She could see how it could get dull. A lot of people she knew over the internet commented about how lucky she was to live right by the ocean. Her house, after all, was across the road from the beach and she could walk there at any time, no parking needed. She never really thought about how it was that amazing. She had grown up there and it was just part of her life now. She didn't think about people who lived in big cities where trees were rare, either. To her, living in a decent-sized town with all the convenience of a big city but the nature of a small, backwoods town was just normal. "Fair enough," she replied with a smile. "Still, some day, I want to see it all."

She liked the idea of engineering. It was fun and she knew there were plenty of jobs for it, especially someone who had so much experience with computers already. Of course, she knew that it was also a popular degree now with all the new technology coming out. "It's better than accounting," she replied. When Royce asked her for the dance, she smiled and finished her champagne before placing it on a table. "You know I cannot turn down a friend for a spin or two." She was used to Royce and his very flattering way of speaking- she adored it because it was so different than Luca and Cai, who would have just informed her that they were about to dance. "I promise not to book you up all night, I'm sure there are a number of lovely ladies looking for your hand at a dance."

Leaning closer to Thora's height again, Royce said to her, "Wouldn't you like to be the object of their envy?" He smiled in a way that would match a wink.

In one, practiced, smooth motion, he led her from the crowd and into the dance floor where he found them a spot where they could form themselves before he took the first step. Royce was not exactly the best dancer in the world, he didn't even take the act seriously and on top of that, Thora was a bit smaller than what he was used to but he at least knew how to not step on toes and dresses. And, he knew how to make it look like he knew what he was doing.

A couple of steps later, he said to her, "So tell me something else about your life now. Something new and interesting."

Thora said nothing, but smiled at him. It was still confusing for her why he was not grabbed up by someone already. She had known him all her life, just like most of the people Luca and the rest of her mother's side associated with and he was one of the nicest guys she knew. Genuinely nice and rarely (if ever) had moments that made her roll her eyes in a not-playful manner. She adored Royce and was pretty sure women were just harsh and judgmental for no reason. hardly surprising.

She was no professional, but her father thought it prudent to at least have her learn the basics of ballroom, knowing she would be going to these events. Not that she did not enjoy dancing, but she preferred less civil things like playing in trees and tracking mud through the house. Still, she couldn't help but smile up at her partner, who was nearly a foot taller than her. He may not have been champion of West Coast Swing, but she was having fun. "Nothing is really new," she replied, keeping in step with him. "I am working in the Federal building thanks to my mom in the IT department. Tyler graduates this school year, too."

"Oh congratulations to him," Royce said as he moved in a way that half-spun both of them into switching places. "Please tell him that." By way of circles and his habit of dipping his foot in every one of them, he knew of Tyler. Once upon a time, he dropped by secretly to one of his band's gig and left right before the encore started. He didn't tell anyone about it or his feelings on the matter.

"And what sort of work are you doing exactly?" he went on with his questions.

"Yeah, I'm excited for him," she responded. Her brother, now that their awkward phase of him refusing to see her as his sister had stopped, were pretty much inseparable. She loved the boy so much and it hurt when he had his 'not my real family' phase. Still, she had given him the space he wanted and kept her being upset to herself. he grew out of it fast enough and Thora was more than happy to forget about it. His band was the best thing to happen to him and she knew it. He was so happy with them and they were so much fun to watch perform. They all had so much fun and it made her happy.

"Oh, fix the network, run updates. Monitor activity to make sure people aren't using proxy sites to hide activity. Boring stuff, mostly," she replied. That was basically it. Nothing too difficult compared to what she could do with that technology. "But it's a job with computers that pays really well."
