The beef stew was warming in the crock pot, and her apartment smelled cozy and inviting. Beth breathed it in deeply, closing her eyes and savoring it. She didn't want to seem too happy when Arthur got there, because he was having a rough time. It was one of the worst feelings in the world, having unrequited affections for someone, and Beth wished she could do anything to help it. But she didn't want to meddle in his affairs, and what could she do, exactly? The very thought of talking to the headmistress was terrifying, and the thought of trying to talk to her about her love life was... Beth couldn't even imagine that scenario.
Come on over, the stew is just about done. Beth sent out the text inviting Arthur over, then set about making the place tidy. There were a few bread bowls waiting on the counter, warmed from the oven and ready to be filled with stew. The pillows on the couch were plumped up for comfortable sitting, the lights were dim but not romantically so, just enough to feel warm and comfortable. She wanted Arthur to feel comfortable, to feel safe here, and maybe it would make him feel better.
