In the morning, particularly in the summer, there was no one in the school building. Why should there be? The staff enjoyed the few weeks' break as much as the students, and no one cared to be in their place of work unless they had to be. At least, most didn't. Collette enjoyed the solitude of the workplace, her heels clacking authoritatively throughout the halls with no one to hear them. When no one was there, she really was in charge of everything, controlling all moving parts.
It was rare for anyone to surprise her. But as she passed through a hallway lined with teachers' offices, she noticed movement in one, and a shadow in the sunlight pouring from beneath the door. She had passed the door before it registered to her as odd, and she stopped in her tracks, pausing to consider it before stepping backward until she had reached the door in question. The door still read J. Crowley, but she knew that the woman was not in there right now. An eyebrow raised, and her paperwork shifted from one arm to the other as Collette raised a hand to knock, thought better of it, and reached for the doorknob to twist and push her way through. She peeked her head in, the scene before her causing the other brow to raise in surprise. She was not a woman who surprised easily, no, but right now she had to admit she had been. "Monsieur Barclay," she said, taking a half step further past the threshold. "What are you doing?"
