Characters: Andromeda Black, Hestia Jones
Setting: Sunday early afternoon, October 10 | Greenhouse #2
Content: SFW
Summary: At Ted's request, Hestia reaches out to Andromeda. They agree to meet in the greenhouse to go over Herbology homework and have lunch.

As soon as she agreed on a time and place with Andromeda, Hestia swiftly packed up her knapsack, making a mental checklist of what to bring. Papers? Check. Quill? Check. Notebook? Check. Textbook? Check. Food? Whoops. She walked over to the kitchens, as she had to quickly pick up some food before scurrying over to the greenhouses. She didn't want to be late, and furthermore, she wanted to make a good impression.

As she opened the door to the kitchens, she was greeted by one of her favourite house elves, Hattie. She waved happily at the elf. "Hattie, dear, would you perchance happen to have two spare sandwiches available?" she asked the elf.

"Sure thing, Miss Hestia! Two sandwiches coming up!" the elf chirped before dashing off to bring the food.

As Hattie went to fetch the sandwiches, Hestia's mind wandered off to Andromeda. She didn't know much about her, other than the fact that she was a Slytherin and she was in Book Club and a few other classes with her. On second thought, she was a Black, and admittedly, most of the rumours that Hestia had heard didn't exactly paint the family in a positive light. But try as she might have, Hestia hadn't heard anything suspicious about Andromeda herself. And come to think of it, Dorcas was great friends with Andromeda's younger sister, Narcissa. Not only that, Ted was a nice bloke, and she trusted his taste in company. If Ted could attest to Andromeda's good qualities, then maybe all those rumours about Andromeda's family were just that -- insubstantial rumours. It wouldn't be fair to write her or her siblings off just because of gossip. And hadn't Andromeda seemed rather cordial and pleasant when they had interacted?

"Hattie has brought two sandwiches just for you, Miss Hestia!" Hestia found her train of thought interrupted by the house elf, who presented a generous helping of sandwiches wrapped in a bag.

"Wonderful, Hattie! You're the best!" exclaimed Hestia, as she took the bag and hastily placed it in the front pocket of her backpack. "I have to run, but thank you so much!" She blew a kiss before making her way to the second greenhouse, food and homework in tow. Sure enough, Andromeda was waiting for her at the spare table. Phew.

"Hi, Andromeda!" Hestia greeted, as she waved at her. "My apologies for being a bit late." She caught her breath before quickly unpacking her backpack. She opened the bag of sandwiches and laid the food out on the table. "Care for a sandwich?" she kindly asked Andromeda with a broad grin. "I managed to knick a few from the kitchens."

She grabbed her quill case and placed it gently in her bag. After the last great quill explosion she couldn’t be to careful and Regulus had given this to her. She had learned to cherish things her family gave her after Sirius was blasted off the wall and she could no longer talk to him. Inside her bag was parchment, an ink pot and textbooks. She was happy that Hestia asked her for help since she had nothing better to do and she needed to get away form her closed minded house mates all this talk of pure blood elitism was really starting to get on her nerves. She was very close to hexing Rookwood’s hair bubblegum pink when Hestia asked for her help.

She pulled on her gray wool cloak and left through the portrait hole. On her back was her bag and in her left hand was a cloth bag that contained different types of cookies that she baked last night. If these tasted good she would send the rest to Severus since he was helping her with her robes. The walk to the greenhouse was nice. The weather was still holding up well for October and the leaves were covering the ground, making a pretty carpet. Once she got to the greenhouse she realised that she forgot her knitted quilt. She rolled her eyes in frustration, pulled out her wand and whispered accio quilt. Somewhere from in the castle her quilt came flying at her. She put it one the ground and then spread all her things out on it.

She was looking over her notes from herbology when she heard Hestia come over. Andy did have the horrible habit of being really early, it was something that Druella had drilled into her head from a young age. She smiled at Hestia’s cheerfulness. “Hello Hestia! I love sandwiches.” The cloth bag of cookies was already out on the quilt and there was enough room for the two of them. “Did the house elves mind you being in the kitchens? They seem to like it when we come by to visit.” They were very nice to her last night when she was baking.

"Wonderful!" explained Hestia. Whew, Andromeda wasn't even cross that she was a few minutes late. "The house elves didn't seem to mind! I'm usually such a regular visitor in the kitchen that they don't even seem to be bothered with my constant trespassing! They're such sweethearts, aren't they?" She thought of all the times she and Dorcas baked in the kitchens or how often she grabbed a bite to eat whenever she was too busy for dinner. Those kitchens were a Merlinsend, honestly! Hestia glanced at the bag of biscuits that Andromeda had laid out on the quilt. Andromeda had brought desserts! Hestia hadn't even realized exactly how hungry she was until she saw the arrangement of food laid out in front of her. "Wow, those look mighty delicious!" she remarked in amazement, motioning her hand towards the cloth bag of biscuits. "Did you bake these yourself?"

She offered a sandwich to Andromeda, before grabbing another one for herself. She rummaged around her bag for her Herbology notes. Homework, sandwich, and dessert? Check, check and check. She promptly sat down and carefully unwrapped her sandwich. "So how has your weekend been? Anything interesting?" she asked the other girl, in hopes of breaking the ice.

She doesn’t care when people are late. Cissa is late for everything, even dinner and she never bats an eye at it since she’s always incredibly early. She liked how cheerful Hestia was, there was no fear coming off her even thought she was approaching one of the dreaded Black sisters. At least she didn’t shudder the way that most non-Slytherin’s did when having to go anywhere near Bella. “Yes, I did them last night with a little help from the elves. I’ve never baked before then really.” She grinned and then scowled when her stomach growled, very unlady like. She took the sandwich it was turkey and very good and took a bite out of it. Merlin it was good.

She waited a moment before answering her since her weekend was complicated. “Oh it probably could have gone a lot better. My sister loves to meddle.” Which was as far as it was going to go since she wasn’t sure that she could trust Hestia yet. “I did however get to bake last night so it wasn’t all lost.” She smiled. “How was your weekend? Filled with talk about the ball?” That seemed to be a safe subject since the whole school was a twitter about it.

Hestia took a bite from one of the biscuits she had taken to taste. "Mm, this is really good!" she remarked. "I can't believe you've never baked before!" She gaped at Andromeda in mock disbelief for a quick moment before reverting back to a smile. "Goodness, I always forget how hungry I am until I'm surrounded by so much food!" Hestia added before scarfing down her turkey sandwich. Delicious. She let out a sigh of contentment.

Hestia gave Andromeda a sympathetic look. While she didn't have siblings of her own, she knew what it felt like to be doted on constantly. While people did mean well, sometimes it was unnecessary and a bit grating when people didn't respect her privacy. "Maybe she's just trying to look out for you?" she wondered aloud. "But I know that feeling of somebody meddling in your business," she added. "It's a bit frustrating."

"My weekend's been rather quiet," Hestia answered. "I mostly caught up on the assigned Book Club reading and put together my costume for the ball. Not terribly exciting, to be honest."

As soon as Andromeda mentioned the ball, Hestia laughed a bit. "Ah, the infamous ball!" Not that she was a snoop by any means, but ever since the date of the dance was announced, everybody and their mother -- including Hestia herself, admittedly -- could not stop talking about their costume or their date. "You could say that again! Every time somebody updates their journal, it's probably related to the ball in some form! It's all anybody can talk about, really," she added, a tone of jest to her voice. "Are you looking forward to the dance?"

“Thank you.” She smiled, it was true that she just started to bake. It seemed unfair that the only boy in this school who wouldn’t get baked goods would be Severus Snape. He was a very nice boy once you got to know him. “I made some as a thank you for Severus. He helped me get a horrible ink stain out of my robes that wouldn’t have come out with out him.” She was still working on her sandwich. She never really paid attention to her stomach if she didn’t need to and lately it had been in a lot of knots over the ball and Ted.

She opened her herbology text to the spot that professor Sprout had been teaching. It was something about the Devil’s Snare plant and how it could be useful around the house. She thought the assignment was pretty straight forward and wondered if this was more of a social call then a real homework emergency. She didn’t mind if it was a social call, she could use more friends around Hogwarts. “Yes, I’m sure she’s trying to look out for me.” She didn’t sound happy about that. “But she’s a little pushy which I guess sums up Narcissa perfectly.” She mused. “If she had to take a job after Hogwarts I guess she would be wonderful at match making, it seems to be something she likes to do.” That provoked a laugh rom her since Cissa loved to hook people up even if they didn’t want it.

“Quiet weekends are the best.” She smiled. “I was in all weekend doing homework and having quills explode on me.” She grinned. “It was actually quiet for once in the Slytherin common room, normally we have first years running around freaking out about Slughorn’s assignments.” She shook her head. “If their worried about them now they’ll need the peace drought come OWL time.” Which was true. In her OWL year half of her house needed the peace drought since courses got really rought.

“Not everyone was as happy to hear about it as others. I think Belby is getting board of seeing us all prattle on about it. It’s funny since he is going and all. Maybe he’s not used to people being excited about things that don’t revolve around school?” Which was a good idea, Regulus had told her as long as you talk about school work with him he’ll talk for hours. “I’m looking forward to going and dreading it at the same time. Belby has been set up as my escort which of course should be interesting since he doesn’t seem to want to be there.” She looked a bit unhappy. “It’s like I’m wasting my best jewels on him when there has to be someone more dissevering for them.” Which there was but she couldn’t talk about him or be seen with him. “Do you have a date?” She wondered if Hestia was able to date freely, without parents yelling at her for a ‘bad match’.

"That's so nice of him," said Hestia, in between bites of her sandwich. She had only ever known of Severus Snape through her Lily, and nobody really painted him in a positive light. Truth be told, Hestia hardly knew anything substantial about him to be able to make a fair judgement of the boy. "I'm sure he'll like the biscuits!"

As she noticed Andromeda open her Herbology text, Hestia took it as a cue and gingerly opened her book, flipping through the earmarked pages for the Devil's Snare chapter. Admittedly, she didn't actually have trouble with the assignment, but the class was one of the few things that she had in common with Andromeda. As Andromeda mentioned how her sister had a knack for matchmaking, Hestia burst out laughing with her. A rather odd mental image of Narcissa Black offering her personalized matchmaking service? Now that was something! "Who knows, it could be a profitable venture!" she exclaimed cheekily.

"Minus the quill, sounds like a pretty good weekend," remarked Hestia. As Andromeda explained the situation with the Slytherin students, Hestia could sympathize. Since receiving the Prefect badge, she had seen more than a bundle of underclassmen struggling under the weight of their classes. "It's a lot like that with the Hufflepuffs too! It'll be the first week of classes, and next thing you know, everybody's losing sleep over the first Potions essay. It only gets worse from there," she explained, nodding in agreement with Andromeda. "Eugh, OWLs." She did a mock shudder and let out a laugh. She could certainly relate to the poor kids; after all, she herself had spent many an all-nighter reviewing her ingredients by name. If she rummaged hard enough in her trunk, she could probably find a neatly-bound stack of flashcards that she had made for all of her subjects last year. "I think I've erased that entire testing week from my memory. I think one poor girl had a nervous breakdown, even. I shudder to think of how this year's fifth years will manage come springtime."

"Heh, I saw his entry. I suppose I can see where he's coming from, though he's really going to have to avoid everybody's journals for the next few weeks." She grinned at that last remark, but her smile faltered as she noticed that Andromeda's expression was slightly downcast. "I'm sorry to hear that," she said softly. "Are you required to spend the entire dance by his side?" she asked with an open curiosity. She wondered if that was the mode de rigueur -- was Andromeda forced to be courted by Damocles? Was that how traditional pureblood customs worked? She wondered how the semantics of pureblood arrangements worked; was this part of a grander scheme for betrothal? She could hardly fathom putting herself in a situation where she was forced to find a suitable partner. Her grandmother -- her only guardian -- probably wouldn't have minded at all; after all, she had let her son marry a Muggle woman. She had always associated the pureblood elite with privilege, but the more she mused on the topic of dating and marriage, the more restricting it seemed.

"Nah, I actually don't have a date," she answered, shrugging her shoulders. "I haven't really gotten around to that yet, though I might go with a group of friends. The dance should be fun regardless."
