Characters: Dorcas Meadowes & Remus Lupin
Setting: Back dated: Friday, September 25, 4 P.M., Entrance Hall & The Lake.
Content: SFW
Summary: Dorcas and Remus take a walk.

By the time the end of the week had approached, Dorcas was looking forward to the peaceful tranquility that the lake always seemed to offer her. After being out with Narcissa at all hours the previous two nights, Dorcas found herself a little worn out and restless, and the idea of spending time with Remus was more than appealing. Whenever Dorcas found herself spending time with Narcissa it was always done at one hundred percent, with their friendship there was no such thing as simply soaking in each others' company. So, regardless of how much fun she did have during the past week it was nice to have a little break from her Slytherin friend.

After Remus had agreed to take a walk with her she had tucked away her journal and quickly made her way down to the entrance hall. She leaned against the wall next to the window, occasionally smiling at some of the students she knew before slowly letting her eyes linger on the activities outside and the students. There had been no breakthrough regarding everybody's current hair situation and Dorcas was finding it a little tiring. Sure, it had been fun the first few days but tomorrow would mark the one week anniversary of her blueberry hair and something irked her about the idea of getting used to seeing students with bright pink hair.

She moved her eyes towards the staircase awaiting Remus' arrival, hoping her blonde hair would return before the weekend's end.

Remus had slipped away from the others with a lot little nagging from the boys. The cat calls and wolf howls followed him down the stairs to the common room where it faded completely as he left the Gryffindor tower. His hair was still lavender but after cutting it he had decided to just hide it under a thin skull cap, at least that way he didn't feel extremely paranoid about it.

When he reached the top of the stairs he smiled down at Dorcas by the windows and felt himself blush a little bit. There were a few students moving in and out of the hall and he had to admit that he rather liked her blue hair.

As he approached her he smiled a bit more broadly. "Hi Dor."

It took her a few seconds before she realized Remus was making his way towards her, when she did a small smile spread her lips which quickly grew as he approached. She pushed off the wall gently as he reached her. "Hey." She greeted him cheerfully before her eyes reached his hair that was hidden under a cap and frowned slightly. She had hoped she might have been able to see Remus with lavender hair one last time, especially considering that they must be getting close with sorting the whole thing out. She quickly recovered by smiling back up at him again. "Any idea when this will be sorted out?" She asked hopefully, motioning towards her hair.

She took a few steps towards the doors, gesturing from Remus to follow her, eager to soak up the last hours of sunlight. There had been a coldness to the air during the past week but it had overall been comfortable. While Dorcas did enjoy the snow, she was a little sad to feel the slight change in temperature.

Remus blushed when he saw Dorcas looking at his hair. At least it was shorter than Benjy's botched attempt to fix it. The color he could handle but the length was too much. "No clue, I think the staff is keeping us in the dark and let the rumor do all the work." He smirked at the comment and followed her out onto the grounds, enjoying the warmth of the sun of his skin. He was still mildly sore from the last full moon but walking helped, well, at least the company was helping.

"Really, I think the blue suites you," he replied as they made their way down to the grounds. The coldness in the air wasn't something Remus wanted. Winter was always bloody awful. "Least it's better than lavender. I heard Malfoy won't even leave their dorm. Can't imagine what that's like..."

Well, he could but at least they were all theoretically in the same boat.

She pursed her lips, a little disappointed that she wouldn't know when to expect her blonde hair back. She sighed lightly and returned back to her original composure. "Of course they wouldn't let us know. Where's the fun it that?" She rolled her eyes and smirked.

She looked down at her hands as he complimented her hair as she flushed a little. Dorcas looked back up at his face and smiled as she thanked him. "Oh come on, Remus. Lavender isn't that bad. Besides I think I've seen worse the past week." She rolled her eyes at the mention of Malfoy. Of course he was taking the whole thing way out of proportion. She shook her head before replying. "Merlin, he can be ridiculous. I mean, I think he is as vain as Narcissa." She paused and raised her eyebrow as she realized that even Narcissa wasn't taking it as hard. "At least Naricssa showed herself."

"Looking forward to the Hogsemade weekend?" She asked. She was looking forward to it, especially since she had promised Kira she'd buy the first round of butterbeers in honor of her successful prank.

"Oh yes, keep us guessing and wondering about when all this is going to end," Remus rolled his eyes. The idea that some of the guys didn't have the nerve to at least show their faces made him smile. At least he left the tower everyday.

"Well, Malfoy is a bit of a wanker," he muttered, furrowing his forehead at the idea that they hadn't seen him around at all. "I mean, having lavender hair is all embarrassing and everything but it's not going to stop the world. And at least everyone else is dealing with the same thing. He's just being the vain arse that he is."

He didn't care of Malfoy much, not that the young man ever really showed him any kindness outside of class, but he forced himself to be civil.

"Definitely looking forward to it," Remus smiled at the idea of Hogsmeade. The Marauders always had a brilliant time when they were allowed out to the village and he knew this would be no different. "I'm assuming you ladies are all heading over again, per usual?"

She smiled slightly as Remus held back on his comments regarding Malfoy's ego. Dorcas never went out of her way to be rude to anyone, including Malfoy. But that didn't mean she was particularly fond of his arrogance or his ridiculous attempts to hold doors open for every female at Hogwarts. Dorcas just presumed Malfoy's absense was another one of his attempts to gain more attention. She raised her eyebrow, "A bit of a wanker?" She asked wryly.

"Of course." she smiled at him and continued, "We owe Kira a round of butterbeer for her successful start of the semester." She had promised Kira she would buy the first round in honor of her successful prank that managed to result in a bald Sirius Black. She continued, "It's always good to get out of Hogwarts for a day, it's refreshing to see something other than the castle's familiar walls."

They walked in silence for a couple of moments before the lake came in to view. She beamed at the sight of it. Ever since she had first come to Hogwarts she always had appreciated the lake and its subtle beauty. She looked back up at Remus, still beaming. "I've always loved it here." she said as she picked up her pace, passing her friend. She turned around to face Remus again, feeling a little silly as she started walking backwards on the even ground. "So, what have you gotten up to this week?" She questioned with a grin on her face.

Remus laughed as Dorcas commented on Malfoy. "Well, I guess a bit is putting it lightly, yeah?" She was one of the few people he felt he could speak freely and openly around, along with Lily and the guys. It was nice to speak his mind without being judged.

"As much as I love this place it's nice to get a day away," he agreed. Course their plans were a bit more extreme with the all the getting pissed and then getting tattoos. "Course you know the blokes are planning on wreaking havoc per usual. But it'll all be good fun. And you ladies do deserve a good toast. You know, the whole making Sirius bald. I've never seen him so shocked."

The silence as they walked across the lawns down by the lake was perfectly comfortable. The way the light reflected off her blue hair, which make him smile even bigger, and illuminated the grounds. He nodded in agreement; Hogwarts was always beautiful, especially with the pending Fall. For no real reason at all he reached up and pulled off his hat and stashed it in his pocket.

"Gotten up to?" he gave her a questioning look, feeling his pulse increase a little bit as she faced him, walking backwards. Why did she make him so bloody nervous? They were friends, right? There wasn't any reason to worry. He ran his hands nervously through his hair. "Well, you know the whole Charms corridor thing and the usually "good boy" things. Nothing out of the ordinary." He hoped she wouldn't be infuriated that he had a hand in the anti-gravity prank. I mean, it had been harmless after all.

Dorcas smiled brightly when she heard Remus' laugh. She hadn't heard it lately and she had grown to like the sound. She nodded and sighed as she agreed. Narcissa was on quite friendly terms with Malfoy and she never understood why, he was quite vile and Dorcas made no hesitation in telling Narcissa that. She said anything in hopes that Narcissa would start choosing her friends more carefully, though Narcissa being Narcissa she dismissed Dorcas and made some crack about her being a Gryffindor. Usually, that conversation ended with Dorcas shaking her head and laughing at her friend.

A small laugh escaped her lips as Remus commented on his and his mates' plans. "That doesn't surprise me." She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear before continuing. "I never got the chance to see him." She frowned slightly, "I mean Sirius Black bald? Must have been quite a sight." She said as she breathed out. Like Kira, she had been rather disappointed when she didn't catch a glimpse of his shinny head.

Dorcas played with the sleeve of her sweater as they walked in silence, her eyes lingering out by the lake before they made their way back to Remus. She smiled to herself, letting her eyes drop to her hands as she noticed Remus had removed his cap. Despite Remus' opinions, she rather liked his hair. Dorcas found it rather cute and was glad she had the chance to see it once last time.

She stopped when Remus' told her about the prank. Lily had already informed her about who was behind it all though she pretended to act a little shocked by widening her eyes. "So you're the reason I can't show my face around a particular group of Hufflepuffs." She said with a smirk on her face and a raised eyebrow. She eventually giggled in hopes of reassuring him she wasn't mad. She thought the prank was ridiculously amusing and can enjoy a joke even if it was at her own expense. "Rather impressive." She said as she nodded her head and stopped her giggling. After lingering in front of him for a moment she moved back beside him as they continued walking.

"I barely got a glimpse of him myself," Remus replied with a smile. He loved his friends dearly, but it didn't mean he didn't appreciate someone accomplishing taking them down a peg every now and then. "Kept himself pretty well hidden, but he fixed it soon enough. He can be so vain sometimes."

He blushed when he pulled his hat off. It wasn't so bad, was it? At least Dorcas didn't mind, a thought which made his pulse quicken just a touch. When she mentioned him being the reason for her now being able to face some Hufflepuff's he got nervous, about to apologize quickly, but stopped when she giggled, bringing a smile to his face.

"Sorry about that," he smirked, "I'd say I tried to make it so the ladies skirts didn't fly up but the guys clearly had other ideas. Thankfully you can take a joke. Some of the others were a little less kind."

His face blushing a bit more when she said it was impressive. Remus was too modest for his own good sometimes, but he was able to see how good their latest stunt had been. "Thanks, Flitwick and McGonagall thought it was rather impressive. I have to say that it was one of our better ones."

They kept walking, reaching closer to the edge of the lake where Remus stopped, watching the sun beginning to dip below the tree line. Grabbing a few stones at his feet he tossed one and watched it skip a few times before disappearing into the lake. He held one out to Dorcas without a word, feeling it'd be rude not to offer.

For the fifty time that afternoon, Dorcas found herself smiling. She nodded and sighed heavily through her smile in agreement. It's not that she disliked Sirius because she was actually rather fond of Remus' friend but even Dorcas had identified Sirius' vanity.

Dorcas being Dorcas, she noticed the slight change of colour in Remus' face and she even, ever so slightly flushed. Her smile faded quickly as random and fleeting thoughts sped through her mind. Once Remus spoke up again she quickly forced them to the back of her mind without giving them a second thought.

"I suppose I can forgive you," she teased before smiling again. The fact that Remus had tried to save the female students embarrassment was rather touching and she was rather impressed by his attempt of chivalry. "You're lucky Narcissa doesn't know. She lost an earring, you know? She was out for blood." She said as she rolled her eyes remembering her friend's reacting. While some people were turned off by Narcissa's dramatic behavior, Dorcas wasn't, she found it amusing.

As they reached the end of the lake she stopped when Remus did and her eyes concentrated on the horizon. She pulled them away when she heard the clunking sound of the stone. She looked at Remus before moving her eyes towards his hand. Now this was something Dorcas was terrible at. She took the stone from his hand and paused. "Before I throw this stone I want you to know I'm terrible and you can't laugh at me because I get enough snickering from my brother. My stone skipping talents are less then impressive." She grinned at him, "It's not something I'm particularly proud of but my skills at this are horrendous." With that she didn't even bother trying to skip the stone she just chucked it in the lake watching as it broke the surface.

Remus was happy, content and happy just walking, talking and behind himself. He was always himself about the guys, but it was much more relaxing around his other friend, especially Dorcas and Lily. It was easy, like breathing.

"I'll have to make sure to keep clear of her then, or find that earring," he replied with a laugh. He doubted she was the first to loose anything during their prank, but thankfully most of them didn't go after him. Narcissa was another topic entirely. "It's probably stuck somewhere along the corridor and will be freed and returned to her...eventually."

He grinned at the last comment. Narcissa, as well as the majority of the Slytherin lot weren't exactly his favorite people in the world. Sometimes he wondered if it was because he was around Sirius so much, but then again they didn't normally treat him incredibly well.

After Dorcas's disclaimer on how awful she was at skipping stones, he tried his hardest not to laugh openly when she chucked the rock into the lake with an impressive splash. A slightly chuckle escaped his lips as he smiled at her. "Sorry, here, watch me. My Dad always told me if was all in the wrist."

He grabbed a flat stone and held it level between his thumb and his forefinger, pulled his arm back and flicked his wrist as he threw it. It only skipped twice before hitting and sinking below the surface. Remus wasn't anything close to athletic, but he did have a small amount of coordination and grace because of his mum.

"And don't worry, they're probably just jealous of how much fun you are to be around," he said. It sounded weird coming out, considering he wasn't extremely familiar with Dorcas's family. But he blushed as he realized what he had just said and what it could mean.

Dorcas laughed slightly at Remus' comment on Narcissa. As far as she knew, Narcissa had no idea who was behind the prank though it wasn't like it would be hard to put two and two together. All things considered and despite how easy it would be to figure out, Dorcas' lips were sealed. "Don't worry your secret's save with me. I can handle her. Besides, I kind of like you in one piece." She replied teasingly. She wasn't sure why she had said that but it just slipped out. She found clarity in her conversations with Remus and she didn't really need to think about what she was going to say, this, was bound to cause some slip ups. Dorcas bit her lip and fiddled with her cardigan sleeve before returning her eyes out to the lake.

When Dorcas heard Remus chuckle at her attempt she blushed slightly and slugged him softly in the arm as a 'hey' escaped her lips. She watched the movement of his wrists carefully before picking up another stone to try again. She tried flicking her wrist as the stone escaped her grip. She felt her cheeks grow pink as it made a splash. She glanced up at Remus, expecting him to laugh at her. Dorcas quickly bent down to grab another stone off the shore and tried concentrating a little harder, replaying her friend's movement in her mind again. This time the stone skipped once. Well, she had made some improvement. She beamed about at him, quite proud of her effort and felt the need to give him a victory hug but she refrained, instead doing a silly victory dance.

When Remus had made a comment about how it was to be around her she flushed again and grinned. "Clearly they're just jealous of my stone skipping skills. I mean, I'm a professional now." She said sarcastically with a grin on her face.

"I'll consider you my personal protector then?" he replied with a laugh. There was some seriousness behind it, however. Narcissa, in his opinion, was scary the way only women could be scary. He blushed deeply when she mentioned liking him in one piece. He rather liked her in one piece as well, but he held the words back. Stupid nerves were getting the better of him again.

He watched Dorcas as she tried to skip the stones, not even chuckling when she missed the first time, but he smiled and even clapped when she got the stone to skip just once. For a second Remus though she was going to hug him, something he would have welcomed completely. But Dorcas's victory dance made him laugh.

"Now you can show them up the next time they tease you about skipping stones," Remus reached over and gave a rather awkward shake of her shoulder. "And once you get that down, it's just a matter of practice. You'll be showing them up in no time." He wasn't just being nice, he meant it.

She nodded her head and smirked. "I'll be your knight in shining armor." She replied playfully, giggling slightly at the thought.

After she finished up her rather ridiculous victory dance, she curtsied and laughed again as she noticed Remus' applause. She began to wonder what caused the change in her mood. Only a few hours earlier, she had been tired, restless and worn out. Dorcas found it strange. She found it strange that she had suddenly become silly and a little out there, something that rarely happened around people other than her family. Dorcas felt her face change, letting her thoughts change her expression entirely. Her eyebrows creased together and she felt her lips curl up as she let her thoughts run away with her. She settled on the lake being the reason of her changing mood. The lake always had an affect on her, it wasn't Remus' looming presence, right? She looked up at him, considering the thought, but as quickly as she had looked up at him her eyes flickered elsewhere.

"You just wait. My brother will be gobsmacked. His older sister skipping a stone? Something he feared the world would never have the pleasure of witnessing." She felt a strand of her interfere with her face and quickly tucked it behind her ear as she looked out onto the lake. The sun was definitely fading and her thoughts started to wander back to the castle and more importantly dinner. She smiled back up at Remus before continuing. "Practice does make perfect. You'll have to watch over my practices though, I mean until I get it perfect." She said cheekily. Dorcas couldn't lie to herself, it couldn't just have been the lake that caused her changes in moods, Remus must have had something to do with it, no matter what her mind had decided moments earlier. The thought of spending more time with him was promising.

Remus rolled his eyes at the idea of Dorcas being his knight in shining armor. "Oh because that won't be immasculating at all." He finished with a bit of a laugh. "Let's just keep that between the two of us, though. My mates would tear the mickey out of me if they knew. Course if they knew it was from Narcissa I think they would understand."

It had been a wonderful time wandering around the ground, and Remus didn't feel overwhelmed by prefect duties, or homework or even his mates like he often did. The grounds were perfect and cool and calm and being about Dorcas, well, he swallowed hard at the thought, it was probably the most comfortable he had felt around a bird in a while. And that thought made him incredibly nervous.

"I'll have to be there when you should him up, then," he smiled, looking around the grounds. "And I'll help you as much as you like until the lake freezes over at least. You should be a quick study so I doubt it'll take too long." Remus gave her a soft shove on her shoulder as he teased her.

Without thinking he checked his watch, not really noticing how long they had been out there. He suddenly found her was starving and in desparate need of food. "Reckon we should head up to for some dinner?"

Dorcas laughed a little at Remus. No matter how many times she had heard people say it, she still couldn't consider Narcissa intimidating. Dorcas often wondered that was only because Narcissa seemed to be on her best behavior when around her. Maybe that was why Dorcas tended to be around her so much, Dorcas had thought up the theory that if she was around her Slytherin friend enough, she could make her a kinder soul. "Oh come on, she's not that scary. She's rainbows and butterflies most of the time." She replied with a hint of playfulness in her voice.

"Of course. I'm sure Arcas would love to meet the bloke who delivered this miracle." She smiled slightly before frowning at the mention of the approaching winter. The season was bittersweet for Dorcas. On one hand, she rather liked the snow. It had a beauty about it that other people often overlooked. And on the other hand, winter meant her precious lake was frozen and it also meant that she had to wear those god awful sweaters her mum knits. At least the latter didn't affect Dorcas until she went home for the holidays.

Dorcas let out a light sigh before shrugging. She knew that they better start heading back but she had rather enjoyed their walk. Though, even she knew it was for the best, since the sun was slowly disappearing, the air was rather cold without the warmth the sun had earlier supplied. "Probably would be best, yeah?" She said before they started to head back.

"Oh yes, all rainbows and pretty things," he smirked. Dorcas was brave, that was for certain, or maybe just had known Narcissa long enough to know better than that. "Most of the time, course her ugly sign is nearly as scary as...well...it's a woman's fury, I don't think there's anything worse than that."

Winter was always Remus's least favorite time of the year. Everything about the cold made things more lonely and depressing than ever. His nights spent in the shack were the worst yet; the nearly frozen wooden floors, the rattling of the panels of glass in the shack. It made him shiver.

"I know, I know, back to reality," Remus sighed, wishing they could stand down on the banks of the lake for the rest of the day. Especially with Dorcas around. But his stomach growled and he knew they needed to head back in. Without thinking about it too much he held out his arm to her and smile.

"Shall we, m'lady?" He was just being silly, or really meant it, or both. He wasn't sure.

Dorcas shrugged and matched Remus' smirk with one of her own. Maybe he was right. Dorcas never really saw any other side of Narcissa apart from the one she knew. But she had heard some talk and whenever Narcissa's name was said around some of the younger students the look on their faces were priceless. They also didn't suggest that Dorcas' Narcissa was the same Narcissa everybody knew. "Suppose I can see how she could be a little scary.."

Dorcas bit her lip lightly, smiling at Remus' silliness. She hesitated for a moment before a huge grin spread across her face. She raised an eyebrow before playing along. She did a small curtsy, laughing again realizing how silly she was being. "Kind sir," she said playfully, her head slightly tilting to one side before linking her arm with his. Her head dropped slightly as she chuckled to herself. She could only imagine how ridiculous they looked, her with blue hair and his lavender but she didn't mind seeming ridiculous to any onlookers. She also didn't mind because it was Remus, she was starting to realise how completely comfortable she was around him. Her smile grew as she started to realise this, not wanting to read anything into it in fear of what it could mean.

Remus figured he could stop trying to help Dorcas see the rather scary side of her friend. After all, what happened between girls was a completely foreign topic to Remus. In fact he almost preferred Dorcas never saw that side of her friend; it would be like Remus seeing any of his mates from an outsider perspective, something he liked to turn a blind eye to.

Her curtsy followed by linking her arm in his made Remus grin broadly, his stomach doing a tiny flip. Her blue next to his lavender made him chuckle, but for a few moments he didn't care. Right now, Remus's arm was linked with Dorcas as they made their way up to the castle. If he thought about it too much, well, he was terrified of what all of this could and would mean. But each time he looked at her it got a little easier. They were baby steps, but they were steps in the right direction.
