Characters: Remus and Lily (if anyone else wants to join, sure why not! Give us someone to get in trouble!)
Setting: Halls of Hogwarts starting in the common room before beginning patrolling, September 16th starting around 10 pm
Content: SFW
Summary: Doing their prefect duty and perhaps talking about some recent events

Typical, typical. Remus had gotten completely wrapped up in pouring over his notes from his Charms class today. Well, not sure from class, there were other notes that he was rereading...just to make sure he didn't miss anything. He's managed to escape long enough to wolf down some dinner and catch all of James's very impressive display of apology to Lily. No one had really noticed that he had his nose in his notes, a reason why he had retreated to the dorm. In actuality he was trying to get over his pre-prank jitters, the charm wasn't exactly easy to do but he hoped if he just focused he could get it to work.

He'd been lying on his bed, when he looked at the clock and noticed how late it was getting. He and Lily had prefect duty tonight, which meant wandering the corridors until around midnight. Granted it could be a bit dull from time to time, but with Lily as company it wasn't all bad. In fact, Remus rather enjoyed their walks and talks.

Grabbing his prefect badge out of the drawer of his bedside table, he pinned it to the front of his worn sweater and made his way down the stairs to the common room. He glanced around, seeing really only younger students hanging around, at which he raised an eyebrown. For a second he wondered if the others were already off causing havoc or celebrating after James's display in the Great Hall. Frankly, he couldn't blame them.

Remus was extremely pleased to see that Lily looked very happy when she entered the common room. If nothing else, he was glad for James that he had put Lily in a good mood, not sent her into a hex throwing rage like earlier.

"Nope, just on time," he smirked as they headed toward the portrait and out into the castle. "Actually I believe trouble does sleep, at least Sirius does sometime between 1 am and 6 am. Not actually sure though."

She was almost bouncing beside him as they walked and he couldn't help but laugh. "I'm glad to see you're in such a good mood. Good to know James's little stunt went over well."

Lily laughed and shook her head at the suggestion that Black was trouble personified. "I'm not sure how you lot have time to sleep, what with causing trouble and all this coursework. I barely have time without the former concern." Of course, Lily had no idea how significant her remark was, considering that they were planning on putting a prank into motion that very evening.

When Remus pointed out her apparent good mood, Lily laughed, a bit sheepishly. She wouldn't have expected that James Potter could ever do something to make her happy, but surprises were a good thing, she supposed. "Yeah, I suppose it did," said Lily, fiddling with the key she was wearing around her neck. "He can do some pretty excellent things when he stops talking long enough to listen," she added, in her usual backhanded way of complimenting James. "Did he make you lot help him?"

Remus gave a bit of a guilty grin when she mentioned them being busy with their mischief making. It was true that tonight would be a bit less on sleep with their current plans, but it wasn't something he intended telling her, though he wouldn't be surprised if she managed to force it out of him. It was the same way she had found out he was a werewolf, pressure and pure concern.

Remus had watched most of James' display from a bit far off, laughing along with the rest of the school. It had been James' moment and hadn't exactly wanted to interfere. He felt a bit of a twinge as she fiddled with the key around her neck, James had showed him a part of the plan but hadn't gone into great detail. "Actually he had Sirius to help him mostly with that one, just asked for opinion or two. I think they kind of consider me their barometer for if a plan would go over well with a 'normal' person." He had wanted to say her specifically, but, well, he decided better of it. "Maybe now you can understand a bit why we're mates."

Perhaps fortunately for the Marauders' plans, Lily didn't notice anything amiss about Remus' grin at her comment. It was acknowledged that the Marauders would cause trouble for everyone in the school, but Lily had no way of knowing that there was trouble-causing happening tonight.

The suggestion that Remus was a good example of a 'normal' person, at least in comparison to his mates, made Lily laugh. On the other hand, when he asked if she understood now why they were friends, she had to look up at him and raise an eyebrow. "Oh, I don't know. You still don't seem the sort to be mates with people who make scenes just for the fun of it," she said, but the remark sounded like an almost affectionate teasing, rather than a disdainful one, as she would have used to talk about the Marauders before.

When she laughed being a 'normal' person, Remus gave her a teasing, quizzical look. "Well, normal compared to what we're looking at, right? Not really the best pool of tests subjects."

She did have a point, even if she was teasing, about him not exactly loving big scenes. It was true he normally sat in the background during their little stunts, but he rarely was front and center.

"Dear Lily are you trying to encourage me to not be such a wallflower?" Remus smirked back at her, nudging her shoulder playfully. He may have taken the comment and the tone completely wrong, but opposites attracted, right? Their group had a nice mix, at least that's what he thought.

The moonlit corridors were particularly empty tonight except for a few other Prefects and some Professors wandering to and from their offices. There was nothing odd about tonight, not in the slightest. They reached the base of Gryffindor tower and Remus checked his watch; he had to meet the boys in the Charms corridor in a few minutes.

"Look, it's dead quiet out here tonight, why don't you turn in and I'll take the last round myself. Sure I won't come across anything I can't handle," he looked at her honestly, hoping she'd just thank him for being nice and be off. The less questions, the better.

Lily laughed at Remus' nudge, and shoved him right back. "Remus, I would never. You know I love you just the way you are," she responded, in a jestingly patronizing tone. It was true, too. Lily had always been grateful for Remus, an island of normalcy, intelligence, and calm amidst the sea of craziness that was the rest of Gryffindor's male population.

She had noticed that the corridors were fairly quiet too. She thought nothing of Remus' offer. Lily assumed only that he was being far too nice, as usual. She paused for a minute outside the tower, considering it. "Remus, you don't have to do that," said Lily, frowning slightly at the idea of ditching her responsibilities. Still, it would be nice to have an early evening for a change...

Remus himself blush as Lily shoved him back, smirking just a bit. He deeply admired Lily for many reasons, more than he could probably list. Never in a million years would he admit it to the Marauders, but he liked seeing her challenge them. "Well thank you, Lil. You're rather lovely yourself." And he meant it.

He watched her pause for a minute at his offer; he could tell she was seriously considering. "It's not skiving off, I'll do it, won't be hardly anyone around. If it does I'll handle it, don't worry," he gave her a reassuring smile and put his arm around her shoulder. "Go one, take it easy for the rest of the night."

The corridors were too dark for Lily to see Remus' blush, but she smiled at his compliment all the same. "Cheers," she responded with a modest smile.

When Remus wrapped his arm around her shoulders, Lily made up her mind. Just this once she would take off the night early, and she would do something good with her extra few minutes of free time, like proofread someone's essay, or throw away some trash in the common room so the House-Elves didn't have to do it. She was promising that to herself, but out loud, she just said "Well...okay, I suppose. Thank you, Remus! I promise I'll get you back sometime, all right?" Lily turned and wrapped her arms around his torso, giving him a friendly hug and a bright grin, before stepping away. "Goodnight, Remus. Here's hoping it's quiet out there," she continued, offering a little wave as she headed towards the portrait hole.

Remus almost sighed with relief when she agreed to turn in early tonight. When she hugged him he took a brief second to appreciate it. The Marauders weren't exactly the hugging types, so he greatly appreciated having someone like Lily around for them. He felt the tiniest twinge of guilt at her smile and telling her the smallest of white lies, but he ignored it. Their prank was all in good fun.

"Sure, no worries," he smiled and watched her retreat to the portrait. "Night Lil, see you."

Remus watched her disappear through the portrait hole and then turned heel, trying not to race down to the Charms corridor. He didn't run into anyone, not even a ghost floating about. It was perfectly empty and quiet when he arrived and contented himself to pacing up and down just in case someone did come by. He had an excuse ready, but he'd really rather not use it as he waited for one of his friends to show up.
