Characters: Severus Snape and Remus Lupin
Setting: Starting in the library then moving into the corridor
Summary: Severus is studying in the library when he and Remus begin a heated discussion and are asked to leave.
Rating: PG-13 for possible language

With the excitement of the ball winding down Severus steals away to the library to catch up on the homework that was neglected. A small mountain of books surrounded Severus as his quill scratched across the parchment. He loved studying Defense Against the Dark Arts because he found the Dark Arts so fascinating, but today thoughts of that night at the Whomping Willow were distracting him. The ball had been a good distraction but every once in awhile when he had some time to himself, Severus' mind would resurface the events of that night along with the conversation he had with James in the Hospital Wing. Severus had put a few pieces of key information together and now had a pretty good piece of dirt on the Marauders, particularly Remus.

Just then the door to the library opened and who should walk in but the very subject of Severus' most recent thought. This could be fun, and after a few verbal jabs I'll be in a better mood to finish up this essay.

"Remus, do you happen to know the features that distinguish a werewolf from a normal one?" Severus whispered as the Gryffindor passed his table.

	Severus snickered at Remus's comment. "That the best you could come up with, Moony?" Severus dropped his voice at the end of the sentence so no one else could heard the name he used. He knew he had hit a nerve with the Gryffindor and this would only push farther. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Remus tried calming himself down, knowing his reaction was probably just egging the Slytherin boy on. Course at the moment, Remus wasn't much for actually keeping himself in check. He turned toward the boy, leaning toward him with both hands planted firmly on the desk between them.

"No, Snivellus, just the best you deserve," Remus retorted, his voice a little louder than was probably wise. If he had been in a normal state of mind, he would have just walked away, but rising to a challenge was too enticing at the moment.

	Severus chuckled and looked at the anger on the boy's face. For some reason he was really getting under Remus' skin today, and Severus was enjoying it thoroughly. He rolled his eyes at the usual nickname the Marauders had defaulted into using and slowly stood. "What's got your knickers in a twist, your tail?" (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Remus stood himself upright as Snape stood, feeling himself internally itching to grab his wand and just hex the irritating boy. The young Gryffindor didn't do well when prodded and Severus had him dangerously close to his snapping point.

"Your attitude, Severus," Remus snapped back, hearing his voice echo and the low rumblings around him suddenly stopped. He felt a small twinge of fear as to how loud the situation was getting, but he was a little blinded by his anger. "Why don't you piss off to your dungeon where you belong."

Severus moved a step closer to Remus, reveling in the fact that Remus' irritation with him was extremely evident. It has been quite some time since Severus had this kind of edge on any of the Marauders and he wasn't about to let it go to waste.

"My attitude, Remus, is a lot calmer than yours." Severus had noticed that the low rustlings of students doing work had halted and glanced around to see most of the eyes in the library on Remus an himself. Madame Pince was giving them a warning look to quiet down. "At least where I belong has me surrounded by civilized people, not those of less than human habits."

"Well that certainly is a matter of opinion," Remus snarled back. He was completely oblivious he was playing into Severus's hand and making himself look like an ass in front of the entire library. At the moment he was resisting the urge to shove Severus as hard as possible. "And I'd rather be with those 'less human' than what you consider civilized people."

His last words almost echoed through the library and before he knew what was happening, he felt a firm grip around his arm. It was almost painful. Snapping back to his senses, Remus saw Madame Pince, looking quite lividly at him and then at Snape.

"Well, that's quite enough out of you two. This is a library, not the Great Hall," she was frowning at them both, her other hand on Severus's arm. Her voice was low so that he knew no one else could possibly hear her. "I suggest you head to your dormitories, unless you'd like me to get your Head of Houses involved."

Remus pried himself from her grasp, glared at Severus and briskly made his way through the rows of desks, now fully aware of his fellow students watching him. Once through the doors and back into the school he didn't stop, pretty sure that Snape was close behind him. He tried to calm himself down, regain control so he wouldn't end up doing something worse.

Severus was about to lash out another comment but noticed Madame Pince leave her desk and make her way towards the two. He smirked at Remus and grimaced slightly when Madame Pince's fingernails dug into his own arm. Severus put on his most innocent face, making Remus look to be the blame with his lashing out. As Remus stormed off Severus shoved his belongings into his bag and threw it over his shoulder, apologizing to Madame Pince for the noise.

"Really, I have no idea what made him start arguing like that. I was just minding my own business trying to study." Madame Pince gave him a questioning look before returning to her work and Severus darted out of the library after Remus.

"Oi! Running off to the dog house, are you?" Severus chuckled and slowed his pace when he was had closed the distance between him and Remus.

They were a good way away from the Library by the time Severus caught up with Remus. The last comment set Remus off, and he spun around, finding the Slytherin near enough to him that he was able to give him a good shove.

"What the bloody hell is your problem? I don't give a damn what you know or think you know! You think anyone would believe you if you said anything anyway?" Remus was spitting mad now; all of his stress and irritation with the past few days being directed at Severus now. Normally he wasn't entirely mean to him, but right now he wanted to inflict as much pain and humanly possible, physical or otherwise, on Snape.

"Everyone knows you're jealous of James because he's got Lily. You bullocked up, Snivellus. She hates you greasy, slimy guts right now. So like I said before; piss off!"

Remus gave Severus another shove to emphasize him point. He wasn't going to draw his wand first but he wasn't above fighting without using magic. But he would give Snape a chance to walk away, there could be less blame on him that way.

Severus' grin slowly faded when Remus shoved him, only to have a small smirk creep up when Remus was getting defensive about what Severus knew. Severus knew he was crossing over into dangerous territory with how Remus was acting but the thrill of it egged him on. Is this how Black and Potter feel when they round on me? I can almost understand why they do it so often, or maybe it just feels this good because I'm always on the other end of it.

"I know more than you think. It doesn't matter if people believe me at first or not, if the idea is put out there people will start to wonder." Red hot anger started to boil in Severus at Remus' ramble about Lily. He still hadn't fully come to terms with the fact that Lily will most likely never talk to him again. After the second shove Severus lashed out and shoved back.

"Don't you think I know she hates me? I'm not jealous of that manky git, I saw what he did to her and how upset she was. I only loathe him for controller her like he does." Severus bit back other remarks, not wanting to talk about Lily. Instead he shoved Remus back and clenched his hands into fists.

"If you say anything, the staff would have you out of here before you can blink," Remus didn't know if that was entirely true, but Sirius had told him Dumbledore had given Snape specific instructions not to say anything, much like he had when Lily was informed when they both became Prefects.

Remus was glad to see he had hit a nerve when mentioning Lily. True, Remus had sort of understood why the pair had been friends, but he also fully understood why Lily wanted nothing to do with him ever again.

"He's not controlling her, you prat," Remus retorted after Snape pushed him in return. "James is actually good for her. Merlin only knows what you would have done to her. Acting like you like her and then calling her a Mudblood behind her back. Real nice." Remus looked down for a second and saw the boy's clenched fists. "Temper, Sev. You wouldn't want to go hitting a Prefect."

He had been around James and Sirius for too long. Rarely, hardly ever did Remus act like his best mates on a bad day, but Severus had touched a nerve and in Remus's mind he deserved the taunting and terrorizing he was getting.

"Funny how the staff would expel me for telling the truth and yet leave you lot in here to wreak havoc with nothing more than a slap on the wrist." Severus was beginning to lose control of his emotions. He had never really had a problem with Remus until now. Remus seemed to be channeling the putrescence that embodied Black and Potter.

"Not controlling her? He breaks her heart one day and she is a sodding mess never wanting to speak to him again, but without reason she agrees to take him back and forgive him. That seems a lot like control to me." Severus' fists shook at his sides, the rage threatening to boil over. "I would never hurt her like that again. I didn't fully understand the slur until I used it that day and saw the hurt in her eyes. She's my best friend and after one mistake she refuses to speak to me yet Potter steers her wrong left and right but she overlooks that and forgives him." With Remus's last comment Severus snapped. Before Severus knew what was happening, his fist was colliding with the side of Remus' face.

Remus had never breathed a word of his real feelings toward Lily, but the idea of her with Severus, even as friends made his bloody boil. When Severus insulted his friends, Remus's forehead furrowed and a grimace marred his face.

"Oh right, sure you didn't understand that calling your supposed "friend" a Mudblood would hurt her feelings. Sometimes you only get once chance, Snape and you..."

But what Snape 'did' according to Remus never came out as the Slytherin's fist collided with Remus's cheek. The Gryffindor stumbled back a few paces, more out of shock than anything, his anger fully peaked and raging. Recovering quickly, Remus threw his own punch and hitting Severus's face as well.

"Bugger off, you slimy git!" Remus yelled, his face flushed with anger. His hands were still clenched into fists, fully ready for the Slytherin to try and strike again.

Severus was in shock that he had resorted to physical violence considering he was not particularly muscular at all. This shock didn't last long as Remus' fist made contact Severus' face, splitting his bottom lip on the side. Severus tasted the blood and glared at Remus.

"Piss off, flea bag!" Severus retorted as he lunged at Remus with his fist drawn back for another blow.

Remus would have all the time in the world another day and another time to actually dwell on how out of character this whole situation was but for now he was blinded by his anger. Like Severus, he didn't have much muscle other than what he got from the moons, meaning he had a slight upper hand.

When Snape lunged at him Remus caught his hands and pushed him backwards. He swung, aiming for his chest and sneering as he did.

"You started this, Snape! You're getting what you deserve. For hurting Lily, bugging my friends, being a slimy git."

The punch Remus threw landed square in Severus' stomach, knocking the wind out of him and sending him staggering back clutching his abdomen. Severus doubled over with a coughing fit trying to catch his breath. This was beyond out of hand but logic was failing Severus right now with the adrenaline coursing through him.

"No, Potter and his followers started this! I wouldn't have hurt Lily had Potter not humiliated me that day. Apparently you hadn't noticed that Potter and Black attack me, not the other way around! This school has been a prison, save for my own house, since the day I got on that train but it's marginally better than home so I stay." Severus paused to catch his breath. "You know nothing of what I deserve. You're just a puppet in Potter's little game, shame is you don't realize it."

Severus had closed the gap between him and Remus with another lunging punch, hoping to inflict a bit more damage before Potter and Black rounded the corner which would just be his luck.

The logical part of Remus's brain that had been nagging at him since Severus spoke to him in the library was getting a bit louder. What was this going to achieve? Both of them getting black eyes and bloody faces? Remus felt the urge to walk away when Snape lapsed into a cough fit but his words flared up Remus's anger. The only words that stuck were about him being a puppet.

Before Remus had a chance to react, Severus's fist collided with his chin and sent Remus staggering backwards. As he stumbled backward, the Gryffindor drew his wand, his face suddenly gravely serious. Severus had crossed the line.

"I don't deny that my mates pick on you in sometimes excess, Snape. But maybe if you weren't snooping around us constantly they would have laid off." He spat in anger. "And I am not a puppet. Don't insult my intelligence."

His hand shook as he kept his wand poised on the Slytherin. There was a part of his that didn't want to actually curse his classmate, but he knew he could take Snape in a duel easier than fighting.

Severus grinned in partial triumph as the Gryffindor staggered back but the smile instantly turned into a scowl when Remus drew his wand. At this point Severus knew if he tried to get to his wand that Remus would hex him before his wand was drawn so instead he took a cautious step back.

"Now Remus, you don't want to stoop to Potter and Black's level by casting a curse on an unarmed student."

Severus eyed Remus' shaking hand and decided not to push him any farther for fear of the damage that could be done. Remus was a fair dueler and Severus didn't even have his wand drawn.

"Oh really? You think it's stooping to their level when you provoked me?" Remus sneered, knowing he had Snape pretty much cornered. However, Snape's last punch had rattled him pretty well meaning Remus would have a hard time fighting back if he wanted to.

"And I'm not that stupid, Snape. Why don't you just draw your wand and we'll see what happens?" He didn't think Snape was that stupid, but then again, they were both in a rage.
