Characters: Everyone!
Setting: Great Hall, evening of Saturday, 30 October
Content: SFW
Summary: Everybody parties at the Halloween Ball!

This is your ball post, everyone! Here's how this will go.

Different locations in the Great Hall will be posted as separate comments, which will include a little description of each. These will be the Entrance Hall, the Dance Floor, and the Tables. You should reply to any/all of these comments with your character, and if other characters reply to that subthread, they are interacting with your character. Please indicate in the subject whether your character's subthread is open or whether it has participants in mind already (EG, maybe John is at the ball and taking a break from dancing at the tables, waiting to see if someone comes up to him, so the title for his comment would be "Jack/Open", but maybe Jill is meeting Adam at the ball, so she would reply to the Entrance Hall thread with "Jill/Adam" in the subject).

Please wait to reply the ball until all the comment locations are up. Backdating of threads/journals related to the ball is allowed until Tuesday, and posting placeholders is not allowed. If you have any questions, feel free to PM the mod account!

Welcome to the dance! The Entrance Hall is decorated as it was earlier in the day, with bats flying around the rafters and floating jack-o-lanterns as the chief source of light. Filch is waiting by the doors to the Great Hall to make sure that those in "inappropriate" costumes are not allowed admittance to the ball. In other places around the hall, students are meeting their dates and their friends, marvelling at each other's costumes, and generally getting pumped. Are you ready to rumble?

Septima/Open

Approaching the entrance way from the corridor to Ravenclaw tower, Septima was beginning to regret her decision to attend the ball. She just hadn't been in the mood for parties and celebrations lately, and it did not help that the others to which she had been invited were the high society pureblood type events which made her really nervous these days. She could only hope that Benjy, when she eventually saw him, would be understanding that she wasn't exactly jumping for joy at the moment.

Dressed as Rowena Ravenclaw in a dark blue gown, gently embroidered lace shawl and delicate tiara - a costume thrown together at the last minute following a few frantically exchanged owls with her sister, Nyx - Septima finally reached the entrance hallway, lifting her skirt a few inches as she carefully made her way down the steps. The last thing she wanted to do was to make a prat of herself on top of it all.

After getting ready, and feeling quite comfortable in his medieval costume (dressing a full-out knight would have been too cumbersome, he decided), Benjy went to check if Septima was ready to go down to the ball. After all, he figured that she would still be quite reluctant to take part in the festivities of the evening. Benjy had made it his mission to make sure that his friend had a good time and - dare he think - enjoy herself.

Since they had their conversation in Hogsmeade, he knew that Septima had been having a difficult time in dealing with her family and especially her sister's upcoming marriage. He felt bad for her, having to deal with so much pressure that really did not have a solid resolution, so instead of focusing on dealing with it, he figured ignoring it - if only for a night - would do her loads of good.

A few fourth year girls were in the Ravenclaw common doing one last check to make sure their costumes were just so. Benjy stopped and asked if they had seen Septima. They responded back with a few giggles and informed him that she had already left. Offering a quick "thanks", Benjy turned and hustled down from the tower to try and catch Septima.

When Benjy reached the top of the stair case, he paused to survey the crowd gathering, and noticed Septima at the bottom of the stairs in quite a stunning outfit. He rushed down the stairs and met her at the bottom. "Oh, Septima," he paused and took a couple of breaths. "I'm glad I caught you before I lost you in the crowd. Your costume... You look amazing."

If Septima had seen or heard of the girls giggling at the mention of her name, she would have been even more nervous. She was paranoid as it was about the act of dressing up, and she would somehow have to relax or the evening could be disastrous. She didn't want to ruin things for Benjy again.

Catching a glimpse of Benjy as he arrived into the Entrance Hall, she pulled the shawl a little tighter over her shoulders and shivered slightly. She should really have chosen a warmer costume or enchanted the wrap, but it was a little late for that now. She blushed at his compliment and tried to laugh it off with a girlish giggle. "Oh, don't be daft, Benjy" she said. "It's not even much of a costume, really."

As Septima pulled her wrap around her shoulders tighter, Benjy noticed the small shiver. Whether it was from being cold or just in general unhappiness with the evening, he couldn't tell.

"Well, I believe that you would give Rowena a run for her galleons. And, costumes are only a small part of the evening. Really, it's just about hanging out and not having to worry about classes or anything else for a little bit."

After a moment, remembering her pulling the wrap tighter, he added, "Are you cold?" Benjy hoped that this was really just a reaction to the temperature and nothing else.

Fabian, like probably some others amongst the notoriously stubborn Gryffindors, had chosen his costume on the basis that there would be very few inhabitants of the castle - if any, in fact - who would be able to recognise him (that was also the case when he was out of costume, but never mind that). He secretly got a kick out of the fact that not only would his costume confuse the majority of the students if they asked who it was, but that his costume was undeniably, well... scruffy. Argus Filch had nothing on him.

Though initially she wasn't going to attend the ball, Ursula thought the better of it after striking a nerve with the Head Boy a few days back. He had docked her house points, which frankly didn't really phase her in the slightest, but the fact he brought Felicity into the equation was even more amusing. Ursula reluctantly conceded to cutting the Head Boy some slack, but that didn't mean she wouldn't pester others behind his back.

Since it was such short notice, Ursula decided to swindle a fellow Slytherin fourth year out of her costume. It was one thing to outsmart someone, a completely different can of worms to outsmart a Slytherin someone. Luckily Ursula knew precisely what angle to work, and she managed to convince the younger student her Morgan le Fay costume wasn't near as flattering as her Medusa costume. Ursula offered to transfigure her hair into serpents, but the frazzled girl declined the gesture and handed her Morgan costume over to a pseudo gracious recipient. Once she drank down a draft of Blundus, she had the appropriate hair colour and was ready to go. Well, after a few drinks of course!

Ursula showed up in time to see her peers gawking at each others costumes. "Joy," she mumbled to herself, striking the ground with the staff she'd transfigured from her roommate's vintage flying broom. It wasn't until she glanced beside her that Ursula caught the sight of a rather strange looking costume. She'd hoped it was a costume anyway because otherwise it would mean some creeper managed to bust into the castle. "Let me guess. You're going as a homeless person, yeah?" she asked the ratty individual.

Gideon had struggled somewhat with a costume for the ball before finally making a decision. The Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz had been his first attempt, but his allergies did not agree with having straw stuffed in his clothes and on top of his head. As awesome as it would have looked, Gideon didn't want to spend the whole night sneezing or with itchy eyes. Ultimately, he'd ended up going with his brother's plan and dressed as the other half to his costume. It was fitting for them, and comfortable to boot, so all in all it had been the best choice for him.

He propped an arm on Fabian's shoulder as he walked up behind his twin when he overheard Ursula Flint make a bit of a jab at his brother's attire. They looked pretty smashing in all their scruffiness, if he did say so himself. He lifted an eyebrow at her. "Outlaws, actually."

It had been an entire day of feeling on edge and jumpy for Remus. Pacing the dormitory over and over, he checked his costume at least 100 times, making sure everything was perfect and wasted away the majority of the afternoon just sitting on his bed, pretending to read. So much for Gryffindor courage.

Remus got ready early, taking his costume down to the Prefect bathroom so he wouldn't risk running into Dorcas before he got to the Entrance Hall. The other students had just started to file into the Great Hall when Remus showed up, standing off to the side. He was dressed as the Phantom of the Opera and was carrying a single red rose, per his request with Dorcas.

Checking himself one last time as he stood a slight distance away from the rest of the students, Remus's heart began to pound in his chest. What if she didn't recognize him at first? Then what would he say.

Relax, you toss pot. Everything is going to be fine.

After the previous night's events Dorcas hadn't really had time to think about the ball, and more importantly her date. It wasn't until Dorcas noticed the other girls in her dorm bustling around that thoughts on the ball entered her mind. Lily had done her best to help her forget everything that occurred at Narcissa's party as they got ready together, occasionally giggling as they did their hair. Lily had helped Dorcas charm her blonde locks into soft curls as Dorcas concentrated on doing her make-up. As much as Dorcas had smiled along with her friend, her worries over the previous week returned.

When the time had arrived, she dawdled down to the Entrance Hall, stopping before the stairs as Lily left her to meet James in the Great Hall. She lingered there for a few moments thinking about the consequences of tonight. Dorcas made a mental note to never agree on an anonymous invitation again, it just proved to be too much stress. Dorcas was pulled out of her thoughts as a few students bumped into the back of her, realising she was blocking some of the path. "Sorry," she breathed, moving out of their way as she offered them a smile. She scanned the room, finding herself smiling as her eyes settled on a group of laughing students. Dorcas didn't actually understand why but shortly after her eyes lingered on the students, she began to walk down the stairs, hoping it wouldn't take too long to spot her date.

Dorcas found the nauseous feeling in her stomach slowly fade as she made her way down the stairs. Dorcas got on relatively well with everybody, and whoever her date was she knew she would have a good time. Reaching the bottom of the stairs, Dorcas straighten out her champagne coloured dress, the corners of her lips tugging up as she spotted her date. She paused, almost recognizing his figure but the tinge of uncertainty was telling her to stop trying to determine who it was until she was closer. As she approached, a giggle escaped her lips as she recognized Remus. Dorcas didn't particularly like feeling like a 'giddy girl' but if she was being honest with herself, she had hoped that her date would have been Remus, and as she recognized him she couldn't help but feel a little giddy. "Thank Merlin," she whispered to herself as she approached him. She smiled brightly up at him, letting her eyes drop to the rose in his hand. Her smile turned into quite a sheepish one as she took the rose gently from his hand. She wrapped her arms around him, whispering a "thank you" in his ear before giving him a light kiss on the cheek that wasn't covered by his mask. She let go of the hug after a few moments and offered him her hand. "Ready?" she asked, smiling at him again.

Remus was fidgeting with the rose in his hand. He was trying not to keep looking nervously around the room, but it was hard; with everyone in costume all the faces were blurring together and he couldn't make heads of tails of what was going on.

Just when Remus was starting to worry that he was going to be left out in the Entrance Hall waiting, he turned one last time to see Dorcas walking toward him, looking positively gorgeous if he did say so himself. Holding up the rose for her and feeling amazingly relieved. When Dorcas wrapped her arms around him, he hugged her back, goose bumps rising on his back as she whispered her thanks in his ear and then kissed his cheek. The exposed portion of his face blushed, but it didn't matter.

"Uh, you're welcome," he replied a little awkwardly. "And thank you, for tolerating all the secrecy."

He took her hand and turned with her toward the Great Hall, walking past Filch, not really sure if they should find the others first or dance or what.

"You reckon we should find the others first?" Remus asked, still grinning like a bit of an idiot.

Dorcas smile hadn't faded once since she had approached Remus. She couldn't exactly explain how she felt in that particular moment. She was relieved that Remus ended up being her mystery man but she also felt a sense of panic. Dorcas wasn't one for any type of relationship, she'd seen the disaster of Kira's and Rabastan's and that scared the crap out of her. Dorcas had a irrational fear of letting anyone get her the way Rabastan previously had Kira, though, what Dorcas was feeling was suggesting that maybe Remus already had her, maybe she actually did fancy him. She pushed all thoughts of that nonsense to the back of her mind, relying on the idea that they were friends and this date would be specifically be a platonic one.

Her eyes wandered on all the students and their costumes. Some had proved to be more creative than others but everyone looked pretty fantastic. She looked back up at Remus as he took her hand and spoke to her. "You're lucky I even made it here, I reckon if I had to wait any longer Lily would have had to send me to the nut house." She teased, with a grin on her face, hoping he'd catch her jest. "Secrets drive me up the wall." she paused. "But I suppose this was a rather good one." She added, the grin still spread across her lips.

"Oh," Dorcas wasn't completely sure. She definitely wanted to eventually catch up with all of her friends. Especially, Doc and Molly. She didn't want the ball to overshadow Molly's birthday even if they had celebrated the night before. They lingered in the hallway as her eyes took their surroundings in. She lead Remus into the hall by the hand before raising an eyebrow. "Have you got moves?" she asked suggestively at Remus as she motioned towards the dance floor. Dorcas wasn't one for dancing. Her mother had forced her into ballet classes and Dorcas rather enjoyed it but she always felt a little out of place. But Dorcas decided to put that all way tonight, deciding to have fun. She probably wouldn't dance seriously, though, hopefully she and Remus would have a few laughs.

Thankfully enough Operation HIO (Hug It Out) was a success. Amelia and Ed were back on friendly grounds, and the trio were ready to take the Halloween ball by force. Sure, it was likely unnerving for Mia to have not heard from Tiberius since his fleeing the castle, but she was handling it rather well all the same as far as Trish was concerned. With Mia and Ed back in line for attending the ball, all that was left was getting her final piece for her costume.

Trish and Ed had collectively decided on costumes for each other that would stir the purist bigots a bit more than usual. Considering the recent protests from pureblooded elitists as reported in The Daily Prophet, Trish figured it was about time to pay them back another slap in the face. She was sick of the anonymous insults and being victimized when no one else was around to help her ward off groups of the purist gits. If they pulled of their costumes well enough tonight, that would hopefully provoke some of Trish's pursuers to confront her face-to-face. Should that not work out, at least her and her best mate could have a proper laugh to their faces while enjoying the dance, right?

It took Trish roughly an hour to complete the concoction that would make her skin appear green, but once that was applied all over her exposed skin, she was ready to slip into her Wicked Witch costume. It fit the muggle stereotype of magical folk, and frankly she found it rather hilarious. Ed seemed to be in agreement, and that's all she required. Trish owled home to get a muggle broom to further humiliate the purists and thus complete her costume. Pretending it was her flying broom would be the cherry on top the sundae!

Considering Trish was one of the prefects assisting with monitoring the students who arrived early, she showed up an hour early to keep an eye on the Entrance Hall. Time seemed to fly regardless, and before she knew it, Ed had arrived himself. "Dressing as muggles dressing as a witch and wizard. We have officially arrived, Boner!" she teased, giving Ed a huge hug. "You look brilliant."

Thankfully, things had been worked out with Amelia. Ed was still a little concerned about her, but luckily she had decided to show up at the ball after all. Before hand, Ed had managed to down a few with Bertie so he was probably a little more tipsy than the Head Boy ought to be. It wasn't too noticeable, seeing as Ed was usually quite the happy guy, and he hoped that no one would call him up on it.

Ed had agreed with Trish that their costumes would be ones that pissed the purist gits off. This, however, was more easily said than done. Ed had left it to the last minute and like always, Trish had helped him get his act together. Now, Ed wasn't particularly one for costumes but seeing as it was his last year he had decided to get in the spirit. It also proved to be unavoidable since Trish had demanded he'd get a costume. He'd picked something out of a muggle costume catalogue and hoped it would piss as many people off as he hoped. The whole idea of a wizard and witch going as Muggles dress up as a wizard and a witch' was confusing enough, and he'd hoped that the Slytherin gits would get the whole idea. Ed had picked out a typical wizard costume and wore it proudly as he came down the stairs. The costume came with a wig, which Ed decided not to wear, but he rather enjoyed the gray beard he was sporting.

Ed spotted a rather green Trish and chuckled to himself. He approached her, still with a ridiculous grin on his face, feeling rather nostalgic as he realised this was his and Trish's last Halloween ball. Ed nodded along with Trish, returning her hug rather tightly, lifting her up a little above ground level, swinging her back and forth. He released his hold and gently touched her nose with his index finger before he yanked the beard off of his face, letting it rest around his neck so he could talk. "I do, don't I?" He grinned down at her. "And so do you." he said as he nudged her softly. "I don't think green has ever looked quite so good."

The last thing Amelia Bones wanted to do tonight was go to the ball where she'd be reminded of everything that had happened. Yet after talking to her friends, along with operation HIO the night before, she felt better about the whole thing. It was silly to sulk in her room all night, and Trish had definitely pushed her guilt buttons by mentioning wanting to share every experience with her before graduation. Not to mention Molly practically begging her not to bail like she had originally planned. So after the night of talking and making up, Mia felt like she couldn't stay in her room and waste the gorgeous dress her mother had helped her pick out. It was a bit bittersweet, since she was reminded of discussing the costume idea with Tiberius, but she wasn't going to let that drag her down all night. There was a lot of fun to be had.

Getting ready was a bit of a challenge. She didn't want to overdo it now that she wasn't trying to impress anyone, but she also wanted to do justice to the dress she was wearing. So after discussing things with her roommates, she finally settled on somewhere in between. One of the girls found a flower crown for her head, and she pulled on the gown and cloak carefully once she had her soft brown hair curled lightly. A very modest touch of makeup to accentuate bright blue eyes, some beautiful heels, and she was done. Mia charmed her cloak pockets to hold various items she might need during the night, and then set off for the Great Hall so she could hopefully have some spiked punch and get this night going the right way.

In the entrance hall, she was smiling and waving at friends, doing fun little twirls to show off her Queen Titana costume properly. The dress and cloak being the most exquisite part, of course, though the gorgeous wings she'd managed to find at Hogsmede was a close second. Spotting her brother and Trish talking not far away, she couldn't resist bounding over excitedly. Their costumes were brilliant! Stopping beside them, she grinned at Trish in the muggle idea of a witch costume. The green skin was just too perfect, and she couldn't help but look amazed. "I love your costume! The green is a nice touch." Turning to study Ed, she shook her head in amusement as she surveyed his costume too. "Let me guess...you're Dumbledore?" she teased, knowing he was matching in another muggle-invented costume.

Trish laughed in an animated manner as he lifted her off the ground, only calming down again once her feet were flat on the ground once more. As Ed touched a finger to her nose, she scrunched it up playfully before running her fingers through his beard. Sure, it didn't match the color of his hair, but it was incredible all the same. The two had really outdone themselves this year, if you were to ask her anyway! When Ed dished the compliment back at her, Trish smiled proudly. She released his beard long enough to curtsy, but his nudge threw her off balance slightly. Grabbing either side of his robe with her hands, she tugged him closer as if to reprimand him. Her smile suggested otherwise, though. "I don't think an old muggle fella has ever been so... tempting," she teased, giving him a wink before reaching to his beard and replacing it over his mouth to prevent him from responding. Trish gave her best mate a kiss on the cheek, directly above the beard, prior to them being approached by another.

Draping one arm over Ed's shoulder, she turned to face the familiar voice. "Why thank you, my pretty," Trish retorted in a nasaly voice before cackling. She wasn't sure if Mia, or even Ed for that matter, would pick up on the stereotype, but it was well worth it despite that. "Ed here is an escapee from a muggle retirement center." Trish gestured with a head motion toward her mate, her hand that was resting over his shoulder giving him a squeeze before releasing him altogether to hug Mia. Of course Trish was careful not to cause any portion of the girl's rather extravagant costume to be shoved out of place. She knew better than anyone a look like Mia's getup had to have taken a lot of time to piece together, and it was simply the worst when someone came along and kissed you, thus ruining your makeup, or hugged you, messing up your hair and so forth. Granted Trish was the type who opted for first impressions alone, and once those were sorted, she didn't care how she looked the rest of the night. That aside, she wanted Mia to have the best experience possible, so keeping her appearance maintained was part of the process. Brushing a strand of hair behind Mia's ear, Trish smiled a bit more gently this time. "You're the prettiest lady here, I dare say," she added, giving her surrogate sister's arm a gentle squeeze before stepping backward to Ed's side. "Ed has his work cut out for him tonight."

Aurelia was definitely planning on enjoying herself at the dance. She had kept true to her word to Felicity and was unescorted for the night. After the party for Narcissa, she was even more excited about having some fun with her peers. Admittedly, the entire affair could have gone better the night before, so she was hoping to get her two best friends for at least a little bit of time tonight so they could think of some sort of payback. Unless Cissa wanted to wait. Aurelia had gotten ready with Felicity, though she'd forgotten a necklace of her mother's that she wanted to wear. It was the only thing her father had ever given her, and she was rather attached to the trinket. This being the week of Samson's birthday, she was even looking forward to spiked punch to curb some of the feelings being around her peers inspired.

Promising to meet Felicity at the dance, she hurried from the Slytherin dorms back to her own so she could retrieve the necklace. Once it was around her neck, she did one more once over in the mirror, smiling with satisfaction before heading down to the Great Hall. The other students she passed wore an array of costumes, but Aura was proud of her own interpretation of the Greek Goddess Hera. The dress was imported, of course, and hugged her steadily developing curves like a loving skin. She'd managed to find a pair of heels that added to her meager 5'2" height, and looked like they were woven from beautifully light straw. It was perfect with the addition of the crown on her head, though she wasn't sure Hera had even worn one. Aurelia liked it, so she didn't care. Her jewelry was impeccably matched, and she'd added smoky eyeshadow to bring out her dark eyes and add to the overall effect.

As she sashayed into the entrance hall, she glanced around for familiar faces, trying not to laugh or openly scowl at some of the costumes around her. Hopefully she'd spot Felicity soon.

Truth be told, Felicity hadn't exactly planned to dress up, let alone deck herself out in a Halloween costume. Muggle traditions such as this one were a bit too lowbrow for her liking. She couldn't even begin to fathom the different ways people would bend the dress code. The midriff-baring, fake gore, and kitsch she had long associated with Halloween costumes made her wonder if any of the Hogwarts students had any semblance of shame left. Since hearing about the dance, she had long decided to take the traditional pureblood gala route and select a tasteful gown. In keeping with the typically sinister mood of the holiday, however, she had selected a darker gown that harked back to the Grecian era, and then it hit her. Hecate. The ultimate witch goddess herself -- why hadn't she thought of it?

A lightbulb flashed in her head. She added black feathers to embellish the dress and allude to the raven that Hecate had once kept. Tall heels, dark eye makeup, and a simple spell to darken her fingers (again, to reference the necromancy that Hecate had dabbled in), and she was set. She and Aurelia had met up before the dance to get ready; Aura was charmingly dressed as Hera, the Greek Goddess, which come to think of it, complemented her costume quite well. However, the younger girl had to dash back to the Hufflepuff dorm, but the two agreed to meet at the dance entrance.

As Felicity made her way through the massive throngs of students, she couldn't help but slip in to Head Girl mode and throw small looks of disgust at the more tawdry costumes. Was that a boy in a dress?! She made sure to stop at a Ravenclaw girl whose skirt barely covered her bum and dock off points for a dress code infraction. Rolling her eyes as she walked away, Felicity marched down the Great Hall, scanning the hall for Aurelia. A-ha! Aura happened to be standing near the entrance hall.

"Aurelia!" exclaimed Felicity as she jauntily waved her arm. Hoping that the girl heard her, she walked in her direction and proceeded to hug her. "Looking gorgeous. Shall we?" she asked the younger girl, motioning towards the center of the hall.

Duncan hadn't actually been looking forward to the ball - it meant actually dressing up and participating. That was a muggle thing. But he knew that if he didn't show it would probably get back to his parents. So, he'd gone with the costume requiring the least effort - a king. He'd simply put on the crown and the cape, wearing all black beneath it. He didn't really need much else to appear royal.

When he entered the great hall, he made a beeline for his sister, spotting her easily with Aurelia - who looked amazing, he noted. But he kept that thought to himself. "Felicity, Aurelia," he said, smiling softly at both of them.

After the performance at Narcissa's birthday party the previous night, Inigo was rather glad to see that the ball had finally arrived. Sure, she hadn't originally planned on attending but after a few pleas from her friends and an opportunity too good to pass up she'd dragged herself there. After being not certain for so long it was inevitable that Inigo was left without a costume. Though, Inigo was okay with it, she wasn't out to make herself look like a fool. She had chosen out one of her black dresses and if anybody was going to question why she wasn't in a costume, she had retorts ready to fire.

Inigo had made her way down to the Great Hall rather early, quite eager to see her plan unfold. Gladys in an owl costume? Gladys believing Gilderoy would be in an owl costume? Gladys believing Gilderoy was her date? Inigo's excitement was already flourishing as she gawked at her students and their costume selections. She was positioned in the corner, the stairs in full view hoping Gladys would make her entrance shortly. After waiting impatiently Inigo considered just heading into the Great Hall. She was one for her plans but she had a rather short attention span and her gawking was getting rather old very fast.

If Inigo was being honest with herself, she would have to admit she was rather upset. Her parents were sending the usual howlers, that didn't bother herself so much because she was so accustomed to them. She found herself in a slump and she knew there was no way out. Inigo was one for disliking herself, and tonight proved to be no different. Sure, she knew that her plan would cause her ridiculous self sanctification but she was beginning to doubt herself. It would cause Gladys to feel absolutely terrible about herself and honestly Inigo was rather jealous of the Hufflepuff. She didn't have her parents constantly reminding her that she was a disappointment, she didn't have pressures about eventually finding a nice Pure Blooded boy to marry, Gladys had everything that Inigo craved. Gladys had acceptance, Inigo didn't.

After making pleasantries with his sister, Duncan was making his way from the entrance hall when he noticed Inigo. While there was no doubting she was attractive, Duncan didn't like being forced into anything. And that's exactly what his parents were trying to do. He knew his mom all too well - she slowly began asking after her. And the fact that his dad even knew Inigo's name was proof they were trying to arrange something. Maybe he could strike a balance by being nice and giving his parents something to awe over.

"Inigo," he said softly as he approached. "You look lovely."

As Duncan interrupted her thoughts, her head jerked up as she heard the boy speak. She smiled genuinely at him, which was a rare instance when Inigo was concerned before she nodded her head, greeting him. Inigo had considered Duncan a friend ever since first year, and he was one of the few she was comfortable around, well, until her parents had started putting some thoughts into her head. They had begun hinting at matching her up with him, hell, she was even sure her parents had spoken to the Yaxleys. Before these thoughts could throw her off, she pushed them immediately to the back of her mind as her smile grew a little wider.

"Evening, Duncan." She said rather cheerfully, despite her mood. "Thank you," she said softly, hoping she didn't blush. "And you look quite dashing." She motioned to the huge doors, slightly tilting her head towards them. "You meeting anybody?" She asked Duncan before her eyes flickered towards the stairs again. Shortly, she was just going to give up and head back to the common room.

Gladys flew into the Entrance Hall, her wings flapping gracefully, as she searched for the Gilderoy Lockhart, who had sent her an invitation by owl to come to the ball with him! Gladys couldn't believe it. They had one flying lesson together and despite the fact that she thought she had embarrassed herself, Gilderoy not only expressed an interest for another lesson, but he had also owled her an invitation to the ball - and even asked her to dress like an owl! She took this with a great pride since he wanted them to match. So with Aurelia's help, she was able to create a great owl costume, quite similar to the owl that delivered the letter. One that even made hooting noises here in there. She wanted to impress Gilderoy after all. And what better way than to create the best owl costume there was! It looked very realistic that Filch was giving her apprehensive looks, telling her that animals weren't allowed into the ball. It took for Gladys to take off her head dress for Filch to reluctantly leave her be with a "No owl droppings" comment. Gladys only took it for the fact that her costume looked perfect.

And so she waited, as she hooted at everyone who came by. She was no earlier, no later, and just in time, grinning with pride, watching for another owl that would signify Gilderoy's arrival.

Gilderoy was very proud of his costume. After a lot of thinking, he decided to dress as a sultan, with the most beautiful silks great-auntie Fifi could find for him. He considered asking some house-elves to accompany him as his devoted slaves, but eventually decided that it would look too silly and ruin the overall effect. And besides, putting the elves in costume would mean giving them clothes, and even he knew it would result in absolute disaster.

Looking absolutely dashing (if he had been into blokes, he would have tried to snog himself, he thought with a grin), he arrived in the Entrance Hall, looking forward to seeing the reactions of the girls who might be there. Immediately the sight of a very large and incredibly realistic-looking owl caught his eye. My word, that was impressive. He wondered who might be underneath it all as he moved over to congratulate them.

Gladys eye brows immediately furrowed as a familiar face dressed in a sultan costume walked towards her. She could feel her pulse already beating fast, her heart sinking as though a sense of things not being right filled her.

That couldn't be Gilderoy. He said they would match.

But it was. Gladys would have known his face in any costume. And now she was meeting him looking ridiculously like an owl. And she was sure, sultans didn't have owls. She removed her head dress, her confused expression still on her face, as she revealed her face to Gilderoy.

"I thought you were going to be dressed like an owl?" Gladys found herself saying, before she could stop herself, a disappointed feeling already spreading through her. She shouldn't feel disappointed. If anything, Gilderoy's asked her to the ball and that should be enough. Surely, he had a reason why he was dressed in a sultan costume?
