The rent was due soon and there were bills to pay and her paycheck hadn't come in yet and Mary Ann was on the verge of a genuine freak out. There were few solutions left to her and finally she resolved to take one of the more painful- but quickest- fixes. She would have to pawn something. Mary Ann owned little of value and what she did had belonged to her mother. There was some jewelry she could try to sell- or pawn, since she didn't know where one might go to sell jewelry- and she gathered some of this up and left her apartment. The walk didn't take her very long, though each step filled her with a sense of loss. With a deep breath she pushed open the door to Pip'n'Pepper's Pawn Shoppe and stepped uncertainly inside. Self-conscious and a little sad, she twisted a ring on her finger and crept farther into the shop. "Hello?" she called out quietly as she approached the counter, "Is there anyone here?"
