Passed through several different sets of hands; securely warded, blood-sealed and written in Magyar, in a runic cipher known only to Hungarian Old Blood:

6 augusztus 1942

Ilóna,

I heard you and Naszvadi made it to Londinium sometime last year. I hope you’re all right there. Things are bad and they’re going to get worse. Vikram Patil wasn’t a fool, and the people who meant us to think so wanted to keep the information for themselves. Someone named Piccard killed him and took the information, but he didn’t turn all of it in, or he didn’t get it all; but he got enough.

Sharolt was in his files, and that’s why they took her to Rome. It wasn’t just because of her intelligence, or because she was good at Transfiguration and the Bihor is not such a very good place for that now. Naszvadi was in his files, so be careful. Stepa too, so if you see him, or Vilém, or Zsuzsi (one story says Zsuzsi was murdered at Cséjthe, but others say they know she’s in Londinium)—make sure they know.

This is all I can say for now. I can’t say Sharolt’s all right; she’s not. But she’s alive, and that’s all that matters until we can break this thing down.

Sándor
