House calls were things that Julian did rarely but when the animal was larger than the children it played with, he'd make an exception. Pidgey was not small like the Pokemon. In fact, Pidgey wasn't even a bird. Pidgey was the Morrises' St. Bernard, who was almost Julian's size when he was a wolf. The poor thing had sprained an ankle when chasing the kids around and was practically impossible to move into the car and to the hospital when he weighed more than both the twins combined. And maybe even if Oliver's weight was added to the equation. Nothing to worry about, though, it was a standard sprain and while Julian recommended rest for about a week as the ankle healed, Pidgey would be fine and running around in no time. The twins were actually human this time and strapped into their baby seats, singing along to the A-B-C song Julian was playing on his radio. That was the extent of his CD collection in the car. Barney and children's songs.
As he drove along the road, however, he spotted a limping animal to the side. A marten, in fact. Now, Julian was not at all well-versed on wild animals but he couldn't very well just let a poor animal continue around on a hurt leg. Even if he was somewhat altering the ecosystem. A week in his office and then he'd set it free all good as new. Stopping the car, he ignored the girls' annoyed whining as he stepped out of the vehicle to take the marten with him. The moment he picked it up, however, he noticed something really strange. The marten smelled of human. Faintly. As he stroked the top of the marten's head gently, he spoke to it. "Did humans do this to you, sweetheart? I'm so sorry," he cooed as he gently carried the animal into the car. He'd have to drive back to the clinic instead of home as he'd imagined because he had run out of bone setting material when he received the call from the Morrises.
He took the marten with him to the driver's seat because he wasn't about to risk a crazy animal in the car. Not to mention if it ran to the backseat, his sisters would most likely harass or devour it. So he placed the animal in his lap and tucked it carefully against him as he placed his seatbelt on and started driving back to his clinic. He had his thick jeans and layers on, so he wasn't worried about getting bitten. Plus, he sometimes smelled like an animal so it usually didn't freak other animals out either. Plus Julian smelled of big, caring dog right now.
