just what i wanted
Who: Zeke and Melody
When: Afternoon
Where: Phoneland
Melody had been holding on to the number of Brodie's elemental friend for a few days, sadly not finding a free minute to actually call the dude that was probably wondering what the hell a random girl wanted his number for. With her sister in the news (and more importantly, the hospital) and the drama that followed, Melody's brain had just been a little dominated. Finally today she found the time between sessions, and she reclined in her chair at the soundboard as she dialed the number. Hopefully, this would go well. She trusted Brodie's judgment. People who could quote The Room back and forth with you for an hour were generally excellent judges of character.
Zeke was just packing up his stuff to leave the newsroom at the Scarlet Oak Sun when his cell phone went off. He'd spent most of the last few days just hanging out, still waiting to hear back from the organizers for Berry Days to see when their concert might be rescheduled. At this rate, he'd have to find them another venue, and if he didn't make himself a ton of reminders now it was never going to get done, ever. Truth be told he'd all but forgotten the fact that Brodie had asked him about passing his number along to a friend of his who was looking to talk to an elemental. So, when his phone rang, he looked at it for a second, shrugged at the unknown number, and answered it anyway. "Hello?"
If Melody was anyone else in the world, she may have found this situation slightly awkward. As it was, she wasn't, so it wasn't. "Hi!" she greeted, enthusiastic as could be. "Is this Zeke, the elemental?" Not a bad title. Why did titles fall out of style? Melody the Amplifier. It had a nice ring to it. "Brodie's friend?" she added, realizing that probably didn't make sense in brains that were not her own. Good start.
Even though he'd been an elemental since birth, it was still somewhat disorienting to be addressed as one. But, Zeke being Zeke, all he did was blink a few times. "Yeah, this is Zeke, the elemental." Since when he did let anything like that bother him. "And yep, I know Brodie, he's one of my bandmates." Grabbing his bag, he slung it over his shoulder as he made his way out the door. "Who's this?" Did Brodie ever tell him what his friend's name was? Hell if Zeke could remember now.
"This is Melody Hathaway," Melody replied. "Nice to phone-meet you. I asked Brodie a couple days ago if he knew any elementals that would talk to me and he suggested you." She was pretty sure Brodie asked permission for this, but who could remember little details when your little sister legitimately got herself in trouble for a change? "Is now a good time to pick your brain?" At least she asked first.
The Hathaway name clicked, if only because it had been in the news so recently, but he was pretty sure the Hathaway in the news was not named Melody. "Oh, yeah! He did ask me about that. Sorry, I just hadn't thought about it in a few days." It was Zeke-speak for saying he'd forgotten, which wasn't a bad thing, just a fact of life. Hopefully Brodie had also mentioned that he was an air elemental and therefore, it happened all the time. "I'm just out of work, so now is good. What's up?"
Brodie had indeed mentioned that Zeke was an air elemental. Unfortunately, that meant nothing to Melody. Fortunately, it was Melody! So forgetfulness would not be held against anyone. "I would have called days ago, but my little sister was in the hospital," she said by way of apology. "Thanks for taking the time to talk to me though. I don't know how much Brodie told you, but basically? I have a friend who thinks she may be an elemental. There was a kind of scary, well, very watery thing that happened, but discretion is important. So I'm just trying to find someone who can maybe help her figure things out."
In which case, awesome, because if Zeke and Melody spent any time together, she'd learn that Zeke was the type to lose his head if it weren't attached to his shoulders. "No worries, is your sister doing okay now?" Not having siblings himself, he could only imagine how that would feel, but he never liked hearing about people getting hurt. It also reminded him that, yes, these were the same Hathaways he'd read about in the paper earlier in the week. "It's not a problem," he said, climbing into the Jeep. "And you don't need to worry about anything. I can try to help, but I'll be honest, I'm not that high of a level, and I didn't know for sure what I was until I got my familiar."
"I think she'll be okay," Melody answered. It was Kendal. She was just... bitchy. But alive-bitchy, and that was all that mattered. And hey, at least he was honest. "Honestly, anything's a start. I know jack about elementals, and I think she does, too. Maybe you guys could help each other, or something." Not the best of arrangements, but any elemental was better than no elemental. And Melody found it extremely unlikely to imagine Gwyn was anything but.
"That's good," he said, nodding to himself. If anything happened to anyone he cared about, he'd be worried as hell, too, but Melody sounded okay. "I can definitely fill her in on what I know, and maybe my familiar knows something I don't." He paused, "If she's not scared of dogs, that is. I promise he's well behaved, he's just... big." And loud, and not all that bright. But Scooby had a good soul, so that had to count for something, right?
Melody thought about it, realized she had no idea if Gwyn had any thoughts about dogs one way or the other, and shrugged. Not that Zeke could see that. Odds were good Gwyn wouldn't care as long as it didn't hump her leg. That seemed... Gwyn. "I don't think that's a problem. Really, discretion is the only concern I know of. Her family... would not want this kind of stuff getting out. They're a little weird about it."
Humping anyone's leg was usually not something Zeke ever worried about with Scooby. Getting scared and hiding somewhere? Happened all the time. "I'll tell him to behave himself," he said, just to be sure. "And you have my word, I won't mention anything about her being an elemental to anyone. I can understand why someone might not be open about it." Even if he was - anyone who knew him merely shrugged at the news and decided that it made sense, given his personality. If only his mom would get with the program and be happy about it, too. "I suppose you could give her my number, if you wanted?"
Melody smiled brightly. "That's exactly what I want," she admitted. Gwyneth could call him on her own terms, and if she was comfortable, set something else up. Sure, Zeke wasn't the right element, and he was admittedly low level - but it was a step in the right direction, and even if she didn't know Zeke very well, she knew and trusted Brodie. And they were bandmates. That was practically like brothers. "Her name is Gwyneth. She's my sister."
"Sounds good to me, then." And it did - he didn't know any other elementals. So even if Melody's friend - sister - was of a different element, it didn't matter so much to him. Maybe she'd at least understand some of the questions he had, and they could find some answers together. Or at least discuss how much it sucked to not know what you were doing. "Gwyneth Hathaway, got it. I'll put the name in my phone so I don't forget it."
"I really appreciate this," Melody replied. "So thank you. Even if nothing comes of it. Maybe I can throw you guys some studio time if you're interested." Although that was something she'd wanted to do anyway. One of her best friends couldn't be in a band without her helping out somehow.
"It's not a problem, so you're welcome. I just hope I can help her out somehow." Zeke might not see himself as a mentor, seeing as he didn't know what he was doing half the time himself, but at least it would be someone for her sister to talk to. Though she couldn't see it over the phone, Zeke was full-blown grinning from ear to ear. "That would be awesome, if you do. And I'm speaking for the whole band when I say that." Studio time? Oh hell yes! It was a step in the right direction for Revolution 9 and Zeke was all for getting the band's name out there.
