Might be the only thing that wakes you by surprise
Who: Kiara & Kerri
Where: Cherryblossom Place
When: Stupid o'clock in the morning
After a short visit with her mother that consisted mostly of shopping for winter clothing on Fifth Avenue, Kerri was done with spending an extremely extended period of time with her great-grand. She still loved Bridget but there were only so many times she could listen to her whine about her house before she was ready to jump into the Potomac. Or whatever the river in New York was. Nevertheless, she had gotten the address from Eileen and after lots of pretend tears (oh, and real ones, too), she kissed two of the most important women in her life goodbye and set out to find the third one. Kerri had managed to convince her mother that it would be best Bridget stay with her and Kerri go to Michigan. Somehow, that had worked out in her mother’s brain as well. Really, Kerri just didn’t want to stay in New York. It held strange memories. And while the chances of her vampire friend still being there was slim, she didn’t want to chance it. Besides, she and her grandmother had lots of things to bond over about. Like blood magic. And unwanted sons. Not that she intended on telling her grandmother about the sons. Or anyone. Ever. About the sons. Ever.
”GET ME OUT OF HERE,” Flurry whined as they finally stepped out of the cab. He had had to be placed in a pet carrier for the flight and the taxicab driver wouldn’t let her take him out. Bending down to unlatch the door, Kerri had barely even cracked the door when the stoat rushed onto her hand, up her arm and wound itself around her neck in his version of a hug. ”It was cold. I was scared. Don’t ever do that again. In fact, get rid of that thing this instant.” Kerri rolled her eyes as she stroked the stoat’s forehead. “Really, now, you’re overreacting. You were barely in there three hours,” Kerri said soothingly. “We’ll get rid of it, though. It’s unsightly,” Kerri made a face at the pet carrier as she walked over to a nearby dumpster and threw it in. “There, feel better?” ”Good riddance.” Walking back to her suitcases, Kerri pulled the handle up on her roller and shrugged her shoulders so Flurry would move down to perch on top of the suitcase.
“Now, remember, Gran doesn’t take any sort of nonsense. So be polite or she’ll cut your tail off. And she’ll have a familiar, so be nice to it, too.” Flurry ran up and down the side of the suitcase, digging his claws so he wouldn’t fall off. ”I promise. Look at me, I’m warm and fuzzy. Who wouldn’t love me?” he grinned up at Kerri in a strange almost-traumatizing stoat tooth-baring. “Never do that again. I may have to throw you in the dumpster, too.” ”You wouldn’t! the stoat looked up at Kerri with big, wide eyes that totally believed it. Kerri ignored the stoat’s attempts for attention and stopped as they got to the right apartment number. Pushing the doorbell, she stepped back and smoothed her coat out and prepared her best grin for her grandmother. ”Wait, Kerri...if your Gran doesn’t like nonsense, shouldn’t you have maybe called her first?”
