Today was going to be a good day. It was beautiful outside, she'd just had lunch with Jeannie, she'd spent the last night at home and relaxed, and now she was headed to her first day at her paying job. Unfortunately, 'all good things must come to an end' and the saying was true about Cheyenne's luck. "Come on, come on, come one!" Cheyenne grumbled as she repeatedly pushed the button to the crossing light in front the diner. The sitter she had hired had shown up late and she was cutting it close with time. She wanted to try and make it up by walking faster, but the traffic flow seemed to be against her. She prayed that she would make it in time, despising the fact that she would show up on time and not early for her first day on the job.
Mercifully, the switch turned and she hustled across the street and into the diner with two minutes to spare. She waved a greeting and a quick apology at Elmo who grunted something unintelligible in reply. Cheyenne walked back to where she saw the aprons and sink, washed her hands and threw one on before coming back into the kitchen. She had expected a sort of trial by kittens, slowly working her way from doing little things to handling big things...that didn't happen. Elmo just handed her a ticket, turned her towards the diner's fridge and made a 'get to it' motion. Snapping into gear, Cheyenne started working on a couple salads while she slapped a burger on the grill, humming along to some random tune that was stuck in her head.
Her shift went like that for the most part, He would hand her a ticket and send her on her way. It went pretty smoothly too, once she figured out there was a method to Elmo's madness. He had only given her tickets with some of the diner's more simple items and he had cooked the stuff that needed more care or a recipe she didn't know yet. It was nice to know that she wasn't just pushed into the deep end and told to swim. Cheyenne gained confidence as she worked, and as a result her orders were pushed out a lot quicker. Eventually the dinner crowd trickled out and it was time for her to go home. She was wiping down her station, so that Elmo wouldn't have to do it later himself when the man in question came up next to her.
"You didn't do too bad kid...You're still short though." He added, Probably trying to cover for the almost compliment. She thought.
"Thanks Elmo. See ya Tomorrow." She said beaming before she threw her apron on one of the hooks and scurried out the door. So maybe the day hadn't been so bad after all...
