LOL NO
Who: Tanith and a very confused animal
When: Midday
Where: Ad Gustum
Life at the brothel had become routine, despite Angeline’s little request, and Tanith felt settled in – as much as she ever was, anyway. She might even stay here a while. She hated her clients, but that was par for the course with her. She hated most people, undead or not. The situation was tolerable.
Even if she did have to draw up bloody lesson plans for a seventeen-year-old wannabe dominatrix. That, admittedly, still broke her brain a little.
She’d been attempting just such a thing when she decided she needed a break. Her annoyance level was rising, and it was time to blow off some steam. A ride around town might help, with a stop at the lake. She grabbed her keys and headed through the mansion, and to the front door. Once the door was open, she paused and stared at the sight awaiting her.
A full-grown cougar was lounging on the walk.
At first, Tanith did nothing. She continued to watch, waiting for something to happen. After a moment, the animal lifted its head and fixed bright green eyes upon her. “Hello,” it said, in a refined male voice. Tanith’s mood soured.
“Look,” she sighed, “I don’t know who you belong to, but you need to get the fuck out of the way. There’s an entire backyard for you to do nothing in so if you would just-“
“I belong to you, Tanith.” It cut her off. It actually cut her off and – wait, what the fuck did it just say? Tanith blinked. The cougar nodded. “That’s right. I am your familiar.”
“No, you’re not,” Tanith replied immediately. “And I don’t appreciate these little games. Get out of my way.”
Now the cougar blinked. “It’s not a game, Tanith. I am Eztli, and you are my-“
“I don’t care what your name is, cat.” This time Tanith cut him off. For fucks sake, she was arguing with a cat. “I don’t need a familiar. So, thanks but no thanks – I do just fine on my own. Go find someone else.”
The cougar named Eztli stood up and turned to face her, tail flicking indignantly. “You can’t refuse me, Tanith!” Its voice was incredulous. “That’s not how this works!” Why on earth would anyone refuse a bloody familiar?!
“I don’t care how it works,” Tanith answered, not missing a beat and looking bored as could be. “You’re not mine. Go find someone else.” The idea might be foreign to anyone else in the world, but Tanith had never had any desire for a familiar. She found the idea unsettling. A companion linked to your mind, knowing all that you knew… yeah, no thanks. Even the strengthening of one’s powers wasn’t a coveted idea to Tanith. She didn’t like the thought of relying on anybody. That was weakness. There was no room for weakness in Tanith’s world. She always was, and always would be, better off alone. With this in mind, she tried to step around the cougar. Eztli side-stepped to block her way. Tanith stepped again. Same thing. She made a sound of frustration.
“You are being ridiculous!” the cougar insisted. “Do you have any idea how long it took me to get here?”
Considering most familiars chose their people over a month and ago? A long fucking time. That or I got the retard of the animal kingdom. Tanith opened her mouth to reply, but the cougar growled.
“I heard that,” it said. “I came all the way from-“
“I. DON’T. CARE!” Tanith raised her voice. It was in her head now? Great. Just fucking great. “GO. AWAY.” Deciding that this was getting nowhere, she walked back in the mansion and slammed the door. She didn’t really need to go for that ride. Maybe just this once she’d make an exception and go smack around a slave.
“YOU COME BACK OUT HERE THIS INSTANT AND ACCEPT ME, YOUNG LADY!” Eztli shouted. The sound was followed by another growl. Tanith ignored it. She heard something akin to a human clearing their throat. “Alright. Alright, fine. If this is how it must be done, so be it. I’ll be waiting, Tanith. You have to come out of there sometime.”
Fuck. So much for life being tolerable.
