I'm looking for a no hassle night
Who: Kai and Seer (ZOMG FINALLY DUN DUN DUN)
When: Evening
Where: U of M
When Seer got the call that classes were back on, she'd quickly reworked her schedule to be able to go. She loved Heme and all, but having spent the past few days there and pretty much only there... yeah, the young vampire was desperate for a change of scenery. So much so that she was a half hour early to class.
This suited her fine. She sat her little vampire ass down beneath a tree, pulled out her sketchbook, and just let herself relax. She heard far-away whispers of 'that's the vampire in my class I told you about' - but she was used to these by now. Being one of the few (if not only) vampire students, and certainly the only one in any of her classes... she got that a lot. She had become quite skilled at ignoring the hell out of every one of them. It worked for her.
There wasn't much for Kai to take for evening classes, thus explaining why she took up the Javanese gamelan class. Hey, it was better than nothing and she needed to fill her requirements for "world music" or whatever her advisor told her to take. Kai didn't care, as long as she got to swing a hammer around and make music. Good times.
She walked along campus donning her typical attire, which consisted of shorts and a Jem t-shirt. For a change of pace, she was actually early, thus leaving her with nothing to do. Wandering about campus and taking the scenic route sounded pretty good. Watching the birds fly on by and chirp amongst themselves, totally check out those guys that just walked on by her, catch a glimpse of that girl that looked sort of like Saoirse from a distance, overhear a- Wait.... WHAT?! Kai stopped dead in her tracks as she looked on over to the redhead that was keeping to herself under the tree, eyes wide in sheer disbelief. Her notebook suddenly flew open, ripping out various pages and began to swirl about her, like they were dancing in the wind... except, you know, there wasn't a wind strong enough to do such a thing, thus leaving only one explanation - Kai's powers. All humanly functions just stopped working that very moment, save for her heart, which was buzzing faster than that new vibrator they got at work. And when her emotions got out of whack, so did her powers.
Seer heard the fluttering of papers and the continued buzz of whispers, and she raised her eyes to glimpse the source this time. Her gaze locked on Kai's and her eyes widened, feeling a bit like she missed a step descending a staircase. Only she was sitting down. Sadly, the first thought to fly through her head happened to be 'at least it didn't happen at the bar this time.' Hey. Progress. "...Kai?"
Ok, not only was the Seer look-a-like actually looking at her, but shortly after she uttered the psychic's name. And not even Kaileigh, like half of the campus insisted on calling her, but her actual nickname. And that voice - oh fuck everything, that voice - it belonged to no other than her old roommate and friend from CMU. As her body began to shake, Kai's lips trembled open and thus began the tirade of emotions that occurred in roughly ten seconds. "NO, it's her evil twin that- WHO THE FUCK DID YOU THINK IT WAS?! OH. MY GOD. Seer? Saoirse Shaddock?! REALLY?! Oh fuck, no. NONONONONONO! This is- You aren't- How are you even- Why-" Her face twitched with each word that slipped on out of her mouth, flailing her arms about all the while. Now her mallets that were tucked safely in her bag were also joining the mix of papers circling her in the air, not showing a single sign of slowing down. "WHAT THE EVERLIVING FUCK IS GOING ON?! Are you a ghost? A zombie? A zombie-ghost?! You're not suppose to be here! You're-" Cue in the inevitable tears that finally cascaded down her cheeks. "YOU'RE SUPPOSE TO BE DEAD!" And then her legs gave out on her as she dropped to her knees sobbing in disbelief.
Oh, Jesus. Well. There was one call her parents didn't make. Which was unfortunate, as Seer had specifically told them that Kai deserved to know that she was... well, that she was. Shit.
Frowning, Seer shoved her sketchpad back in her bag and headed over to her old psychic friend. "I am dead, honey. Technically speaking," she answered, kneeling down next to Kai. "I'm sorry. My parents were supposed to tell you. I guess they didn't." What the hell was one supposed to say? Really, now. This reaction was all kinds of new, and not at all happy. She just wanted her to stop crying. Oh. "...I got turned."
Kai lifted her head up as Seer knelt down beside her, still shaking at the sight of her friend being there. She looked... different. Oh wait, she was dead. WHAT?! It took her a second to piece things together, seeing that she was still trying to get over the initial hurdle of 'oh hey, my old friend is still alive!' And by alive, she meant not six feet under, because apparently she was dead. It took Kai a moment, though once her sobs softened a little, she stared at Seer before reaching out and poking her nose. Cold to the touch. Oh yes, this was totally happening. "You're.... you're a..." Vampire?! The words couldn't escape Kai, though there was a good enough reason why they didn't. There were WAY more important things to focus on, like the fact that Seer was right there in front of her. So fuck the fact she was a vampire, was cold, and probably freaked out as much as Kai was. Being her impulsive self, Kai immediately swung her arms around Seer and latched tightly onto the redhead while crying. "Oh my god, you're BACK!"
Did she just... boop my nose? Yes, yes she did. Most people went for her hands for vampiric confirmation. Kai went for the nose. Of course she did. Somehow, Seer couldn't force herself to be surprised. She blinked at the immediate glomping, having to wish that all the humans in her life didn't always want to hug her. Of course she was glad to see Kai - all the old conflicted feelings she'd had with Neil were there. Wanting to see her and know what was going on and be back in her life while simultaneously wanting to run straight in the other direction. But she still wasn't used to touchy humans anymore.
There was one thing in their favor. Kai reeked of a psychic, and nothing about that was even the slightest bit appealing to Seer's vampy-tastebuds. She sighed and wrapped her arms around Kai, carefully, and nodded slightly. "I told my parents in May. They were supposed to tell you. I'm sorry."
"In May? You mean..." Kai's words trailed off into nothing but sniffles while she kept clinging onto Saoirse. Did this mean that she had been around the whole time? Where had she been?! Why didn't anyone let Kai know? As her mind wandered some more, so did her mouth, which resulted in the slew of word vomit that poor Saoirse had to be subjected to. "Oh god, I like, left a year or so ago, only a couple of weeks after you had... poofed? I don't know. I was such a fucking wreck and I didn't know what to do without you and my grades were dropping and I left CMU and moved back in with my psychopath of a mother and she yelled at me and didn't care that, HELLO, you like, died or some shit and I ended up leaving and coming here and I don't know if your parents knew that I left and now that I think of it, my mom would like, never tell your mom about my current whereabouts and-" Kai finally took a moment to breathe, but only because she had an epiphany amongst her cloud of thoughts. Once she did, the papers and mallets floating around her all dropped to the ground and she pulled herself away enough to stare her friend right in the eyes, her own still welling with tears.
"Wait... YOU were murdered that night. What happened that- OH. MY. GOD. DID AMBROSE DO THIS SHIT TO YOU!?" Hopefully Kai didn't need her notes on gamelans, because they all ripped into hundreds of pieces in result of her outburst. "YOU JUST SAY THE WORD, SEER, AND I'LL FUCK HIS SHIT UP TEN WAYS 'TIL SUNDAY."
Guilt, party of one. Yeah, Saoirse was becoming a regular to that little party. She tried to keep up with Kai, figuring that yeah, that probably was exactly what had happened, and when her parents couldn't find Kai, they didn't want to bother Saoirse with another worry. "No, no, he didn't. He's completely human." Painfully, purely human. That encounter had been such a fucking disaster. "It's a really long story, Kai, and not a really fun one. I was unwillingly sired, and then I had to get the hell out of town. I was pretty unstable in the beginning, and I didn't really have a choice in the matter otherwise." Needless to say, Saoirse would have handled things very differently if she'd had a choice in the matter.
Someone did this to her against her own will?! Oh, like that was somehow better. At least he love interest didn't harm her. Rubbing her eyes in hopes to rid herself of some of her tears, Kai sniffled a bit before placing her hands firmly on her friend's shoulders. "But you're better now, right? I mean, you can't be nearly as unstable as I am!" Joking about herself always managed to get a chuckle out of people, though even her own giggle was weak. "Just... no leaving again! Dude, I don't CARE. Call me or something! Doesn't matter what's going on or when or where it is... I'm here for you, Seer." Cue in more tears. "Just like how you were always there for me, and you deserve a good friend, so I don't care what you say, I'm staying by your side!" It didn't matter what shit was going on in Saoirse's life. Crazy ex-boyfriends, vampires, demons, whatever. She was going to stick by the redhead until the bitter end.
Oh, jeez. If Kai kept this up, Seer was going to start crying, and nobody wanted that. Of all the adjustments Seer had needed to get used to, the tears of blood had been something she'd just never been able to accept. It still horrified her as much as it had that first day. "It wasn't safe, Kai..." she said, both sad and apologetic. "I was so unstable. I hated to cut that cord, it's just so complicated..." Was she better now? For the most part. "Things are good now. How are you? Are you okay?"
If things were good now, then that was all that mattered. No more sad Saoirse. She wouldn't allow it. And now that the topic suddenly shifted to the unstable psychic, Kai just let out a nervous laugh. "Oh god, my shitstorm of a life..." Rubbing her tears away with her palms, she readjusted her glasses before looking up at the redhead. "Well, I was a complete and utter fucking mess when you... you know, went poof, I guess. Which isn't your fault at all, I just didn't know how to handle any of it." With a sniffle, she pushed her hair out of her face while nibbling on her lower lip. "I dropped out of CMU. Well, hur hur, no shit, that's why I'm here! I didn't have the will to graduate in some shitty marketing... communications... whatever the hell I did. Mom wasn't happy." Kai scoffed and rolled her eyes. "Fucking bitch is never happy. So I said 'fuck you, mom,' packed my shit, aaaaaand came out to Scarlet Oak to pursue what I really love." She reached out to her mallets that were shaking slightly on the ground and held them up in front of her, giving them a bit of a wiggle as she flashed a shaky smile. "Music! Just like you told me to back on day 1 of college."
Saoirse had to flash a grin, even if she still wanted to cry or at least wibble a bit. She realized immediately that her fangs would be visible and closed her mouth, knowing that was just far too weird for some people to adjust to right off the bat. "That's great, Kai. Well. The ending is. Not the rest of the stuff." Yeah, no. The rest of the stuff just hurt. She hated to think about how people had fallen apart with grief, and the aftermath that followed.
She didn't want Saoirse to worry about what had happen in her absence. It wasn't like she went out that night and said 'Fuck all of you!' before skipping town for a good year. This was something out of her control and now she was back! And that was all that mattered to Kai. Hell, the visible fangs didn't even make Kai flinch. If that was what her friend was now, she accepted it. Saoirse was still good ol' Saoirse. "Oh, don't worry about the rest of the stuff! What matters is now, and now I'm doing music and you're back and all is well in my book, if you ask me." She gently tapped a mallet on top of Saoirse's head while letting out a "Boop!" before smiling at her. "No need to be sad, Seer. I'm just... oh my god, wow, you're back!" And there went Kai being sniffly again while she pulled Saoirse into another adoring hug. "I'm just so happy you're back! I missed you."
Dammit, now Saoirse was going to cry. She sniffled and hugged back, keeping her eyes tightly shut, forbidding any of those horrible bloody tears to come out. Why was this hitting her so much harder than seeing Neil again? Possibly because Kai was being so... so Kai about the whole thing. Neil had, at times, really made Saoirse feel about two inches tall. Which she needed! She had it coming, so long and so hard it was amazing the IRS hadn't started to track her down. Kai would have had every right to let her have it. But she was so immediately accepting. There was no way to prepare for that - especially considering Saoirse had only just started to accept what she was. "I missed you too," she said. "You have no idea how hard it's been."
"No need for it to be hard anymore," she spoke lightly while hugging Saoirse. "We got each other again!" Kai pulled away to smile at her while rubbing away her own tears again. It might not have been hard anymore, but that didn't mean Kai wasn't going to cry about it. "I mean, we can hang out again and watch movies until 4 in the morning and make fun of all the prostitots on campus and just-" She laughed lightly at the thought, but said it anyways. "-go back to normal." Whatever normal was, anyways. Vampires could still do all of that, right? If Saoirse was on campus, she could only imagine that meant the redhead was taking classes. So if a vampires could attend college with no issue, then they sure as hell could partake in other shenanigans.
It was impossible to explain that 'normal' was never going to happen again. Saoirse had tried that talk with her parents, and while they were trying to be supportive, she knew they were disappointed. Neil, of course, had been Neil. With Kai... Saoirse just didn't have the heart to insist that nothing would ever be normal again. To some extent, Kai had a point. Saoirse had come here to try and pick up where she left off, albeit with a few significant tweaks. So she laughed softly and nodded. Normal. Uh-huh. Sure. At least Kai smelled so heavily of a psychic. No desire to feed - but she wasn't willing to hope that it would never be there. "Well. I don't sleep anymore," she offered, with another soft laugh. "I guess that's more time for shenanigans."
Wait.. Saoirse didn't sleep anymore!? Her eyes widened upon hearing that and gasped. "Holy shit, YOU DON'T SLEEP!? Like, ever?! DUDE. You'd be THE best late night drinking buddy to have! Oh my god, I wish I never had to sleep! I'd never have to worry about pulling all nighters for class or waking up early or any of that." Kai even went as far as to pout at her friend before erupting into giggles. "Lucky! Most I can do is... uh..." She eyed the ripped up pieces of paper scattered all about the ground, thanks to her unstable telekinesis. "Well, I did that," she pointed to the papers then looked up the redhead with a devious grin. "And I can still do this." With a little bit of concentration, she worked her fae magic and instantly changed her hair color to pink. "Oh man! Do you remember when we used to pull pranks on people with this stuff all the time?! We need to do that again!"
What an awesome kick to the emotional nads this was turning out to be. Of course, Kai wasn't doing any of it on purpose. She was just hitting a lot of Saoirse's sore spots. She missed sleeping. Terribly. And the glamors? Fucking ouch. She smiled sadly. "I can't do glamor anymore," she said. "Any magic. Vamps are incapable of it." Not that anyone knew why. The winning theory, as far as Saoirse knew, was that only the living could bend magic to their will. Or something.
And there went Kai's smile, deflating faster than a balloon. Now it was replaced with a massive frowny face. "...no more magic?" And that was one of her fondest memories with Saoirse. The fact they were both fae-blooded and could do all sorts of goofy thingy. Now they could never do that again. It was all just a faraway memory. Wow, what could she do with Saoirse? She was determined that the vampire thing wouldn't get in the way. It couldn't! Saoirse was still herself, regardless of what happened. After a moment of some saddening silence, she flicked her eyes on up to her friend and tried to think of something else. "You have to still do something. Being a vampire can't suck all the fun out of you!" She forced a weak smile before a light bulb went off over her head. "What about music? You still play, right? And your art, too!" And if vampires were allergic to melodies or lead pencils, Kai was going to have a conniption.
Way to kill the happy reunion, Seer, Saoirse thought, kind of wanting to kick herself. She laughed softly at Kai's realization - it started weak, but it gained something. "I'm dead, not immobile," she pointed out. "None of that took magic. I still have it. And I have all the vampire perks. You know. Better senses, stronger, faster, better, all that supposed stuff." Which wasn't necessarily how she felt about it all - certainly not 'better' - but she didn't want to set Kai on a downer. "I'm me. Just a tweaked me."
Knowing that Saoirse could still do something made Kai perk back up. She even chuckled at the idea of the redhead being tweaked. "Kind of like how Optimus Prime died in the Transformers movie, but came back in the series even more awesome!" Oh yes, Kai went there. She had to compare her friend to an 80s cartoon. It wasn't a day until she referenced something somehow. "Though you're too cool to have an energon axe. Being yourself is good enough! And if you can jam better than before, than we definitely need to hook up sometime when class isn't- OH MY GOD! CLASS! What time is it?!"
Saoirse had to laugh again, though this time it was more genuine. "I'm Optimis Prime? Really?" she giggled. "I've been upgraded from a care bear, I guess." Even if she often didn't feel like it was an upgrade, she had to keep reminding herself that it was much better than it could be. She had good friends, a good job, she was back in school... albeit late for class. "It's time to get to class," she confirmed with a sad nod. "But we'll see each other again!"
"Laaaame!" Kai groaned at the thought, then suddenly perked back up. "Wait wait wait waaaaaait! We need to exchange numbers and stuff!" Shuffling through her bag, she whipped out a classic Sharpie and popped the cap off with her teeth before grabbing Saoirse's hand and scribbling down her cell number for her. "Seriously, dude, feel free to call me. We can totally chill sometime. Anytime! I don't care if it's 4am. You know I'm game." Her smile remained on her lips, even if it was a somewhat sad one. Holy crap, she just found out her old friend wasn't dead, how could she not be sad? Vampire or not, Kai was set in her way to keep this friendship around. "Quick quick! Gimme yours!" She extend out her own wrist and handed the Sharpie to Saoirse, not entirely caring if she was late for her gamelan class.
Naturally, Saoirse did as she was told, ignoring the memories of Graham that sharpies brought up. Once upon a time she'd given her whole collection to Kai, insisting she didn't want to see the damn things anymore. "I'm working at Heme," she announced, figuring it better to give someone a head's up for a change. How fucking novel. "So if I don't answer, I'm probably there."
A tiny squee escaped Kai as she gained her friend's number, knowing she'd plug it into her crappy cellphone after class. Perhaps even send her a text when class was over. Hell, she didn't sleep, so it wasn't like she would wake her up in the middle of the night. "Oh wow! You do!? I'll totally stop on by sometime!" After stowing her Sharpie back into her back and recomposing her belongings, she stared back at the redhead and gave her a sad smile. It was so odd to know her friend was still alive. Never dead to begin with. Well... ok, that was complicated, but it made sense in Kai's head. Sniffling, she held back those emotional tears and pulled Saoirse into one more tight hug before whispering to her. "I've missed you so much, Seer. I can't tell you how happy I am to have you back." Reluctantly peeling herself away, she rubbed her eyes and waved. "I'll see you around, girl! Don't be a stranger, ok?" She slowly walked away, glancing over her shoulder from time to time to glance in Saoirse's direction, not even caring if people were staring at her brightly colored, glamoured hair. Everyone else's opinion didn't matter right then. Not when she had Saoirse back.
