Do you have ANY idea how long I've been trying to get your attention? Huh, punk?
Who: Gabby and Urist (NPC)
When: late afternoon, after Gabby runs into Kate
Where: near a random park in SO
Having been cooped up in the high school and her house for far too long, Gabby needed to get the fuck out've the house. She didn't have any idea where she was going, nor did she care. She just knew she was in no mood to remain indoors. Despite the continued demon activity. And if anything nasty came her way, she had her Zippo.
She was passing one of the parks in Scarlet Oak when a flash of gray and red streaked across the road from the trees. Right in front of her car. She yelped and stomped the brakes. The rain that still soaked the road made her skid a few feet before she came to a stop. "Dear God, please tell me I didn't kill the poor thing." She squeezed her eyes shut, despite the fact that that was a bad idea, praying she didn't feel her car collide with whatever it was that had entered the road.
Gabby didn't feel anything. Opening her eyes, she looked around, and didn't see a damn thing. She drove around and pulled into the parking area for the park, getting out of her car in order to look around. "What the fuck was that thing?" She turned about in a circle, surveying the area. Nothing. The rain had let up a bit, but Gabby did not mind that her clothes were getting progressively damper.
Gabby was facing fully away from her car when she heard it. A soft "thwump" sound sounded behind her, followed by a snarling masculine voice. "Do you have ANY idea how long I've been trying to get your attention? Huh, punk? And then you try to run me the over with your car? I outta tear your face off!" Gabby didn't hear any actual sounds as she turned around with a jump. It was like the animal was speaking in her head. A very angry, very ruffled looking fox. Standing on the hood of her car. Gabby's mouth dropped open in shock. "The fuck?"
"Is that all you're good at? Spouting off at the mouth with your filthy words?"
Gabby stuttered for a moment, trying to think of something, anything, that would make sense at the moment. She grasped around for something to explain why an animal was talking in her head. Suddenly, the figurative light-bulb went on above her head, and Gabby was a little ashamed it had taken her this long to figure it out. After all, her dad and her mother had their own familiars.
"Ah, good. So I don't have to explain it to you."
Gabby stuttered again, completely incapable of dealing with the fact that the thing had read her mind.
"Hey! Let's get one thing straight here, I am not a thing! I am a fox. A gray fox, to be more precise. And for better or worse, I'm your familiar. Any questions?" Gabby shook her head dumbly. "Good. Now take me home. This rain isn't looking like its letting up soon. And we may as well get to know each other if we're going to be partners."
"Wha-- What do I call you?"
"Urist." Gabby raised her brows and shrugged. "Alright then." She opened the driver's side and paused, letting the fox climb in to sit in the passenger's side. Climbing in and closing the door, Gabby drove home, her head swirling with questions. Like, why Urist had chosen this moment to appear.
"I've been trying to find you for a solid month now. And, I'm here because of the demon activity. You being holed up in the high school prevented me from getting to you. Trust me, you would not want me waltzing into a place like that. Never know what people might do."
Gabby focused on driving, but glanced over at the fox several times. "So how am I supposed to explain you to people who don't know? You're a strange pet? At least my dad has a dove. And my mom has a collie. A little bit easier to explain than a fuc--" Urist glared and stood up on his paws in the seat, growling. Gabby corrected herself. "Than a fox."
Urist nodded, looking very un-foxlike with the motion. "Well, its not like I'll be parading around with you everywhere you go. But, if you aren't "out" with all your friends, you may as well do it now. That's the whole point of the Light of May, right?"
"How do you know about that?" Gabby was a little confused.
"Let's put it this way: I know your thoughts. I know your mind. Anything you think about, I know. And I mean, anything. So let's keep your thoughts about last night to yourself, yes?"
Gabby blushed and tried to change the subject. "So, uhm, what are you supposed to do now that you've found me?"
"Keep you out of trouble as much as possible. And if I can't manage that, at least be around you so that you're more powerful. I'm like an amp for your elementalism. When I'm around, your gifts are easier to manipulate. Didn't your dad ever tell you that? Or were you too busy boy-chasing to give it much thought?"
Gabby colored further, her temper flaring. "Hey, what I do in my free time is my business. If you don't like it, then you can just leave." Couldn't he?
"Not so fast, Sparky. Now that I've found you, I need to stick by you." Urist sighed in her head, shaking some of the rain off his coat.
"Hey!"
"Sorry. Look, we've started off badly. I really am here to help you. I hope you can at least trust that. And even if you don't like the things I have to say, I mean them with love. I'm just trying to look out for you, Gabby." So saying, Urist moved over in order to sit in Gabby's lap, curling into a little ball and covering his nose with his fluffy brush. Gabby startled at first, and swerved a bit. "Careful with the wheel, Sparky, I'm not going to bite you." Gabby chuckled at that.
"Sure. Well, I've never really had a pet before, so this is pretty new. Something about fire usually turns most cats and dogs off to the idea of being close to me." Gabby frowned, having never given it much thought.
"Well, all I know is that you're much warmer than I'm used to being. Kind of like my own personal sauna." Urist wriggled in her lap some more, a contented sigh flickering in Gabby's mind.
"Well, I guess that's good." Gabby had a thought. "What do you eat?"
"If you try to feed me dog food like you were just considering, I will make you hurt. I'm an omnivore. So, pretty much anything you want to give me. But, I can definitely take care of myself, so don't feel like you have to provide me food. Especially kibble." Urist made a disgusted sound, and shook his head from side to side before settling more comfortably in Gabby's lap.
Gabby chuckled, feeling like she was warming up to the little fella. "Well, that's good. So, do you have a family?" She was greeted with a silence in the car and in her head. She glanced down and noted the gentle rise and fall of the fox's gray and tawny flanks. "Aww. Little guy's all tuckered out." Gabby smiled and used one hand to stroke Urist's fur while he slept. "Welcome to the family, Urist." Somewhere in his dreams, Urist was killing demons and saving the day. After a whole month of searching, he'd finally found his Gabby, and a true, deep sleep finally claimed him.
