To watch you, to shield you or kill on demand
Who: Kristen, Missy and Abyzou demon (NPC)
Where: Peloe home
When: Around 2:00 p.m.
When most kids woke up on their birthday they were excited. Especially for something so important as turning ten! But when Kristen's eyes fluttered open they were damp, her cheeks streaked with tears that had come while she slept for the second night in a row. Even now, hours later, she could still remember the fear that had haunted her dreams. Worse than just something happening to Missy it was almost like something was happening to the world. Again. Like... Kristen bit her lip, tucking into a roll across the grassy lawn. Like back at the end of June when all the demons had come. "But that's not happening again," Kristen assured Mitzi as she came up from her roll, offering a smile for the puppy and letting her crawl into her lap. "What's wrong, Mitzi?" Normally the golden retriever pup was a wriggling little ball of energy, but right then she was shaking and whimpering.
There it was again, that sick twist to her stomach and Kristen felt herself gagging as she forced herself to stand, still holding Mitzi in her arms. She completely forgot about the fact that she was upset about Missy going to work on her birthday. About the whole thing with her not listening because right then all that mattered was something wasn't right. "Anna?" Kristen called for her baby-sitter as she backed towards the house, eyes on the gate leading out of the yard. The latch was shifting, wriggling and opening and Mitzi whimpered again as the gate swung in.
It wasn't human. Kristen hadn't watched the news or listened to anything anyone was saying about what was happening today but the sight of that thing standing there, staring at her, shined a light on why her stomach was heaving. She'd seen pictures from the last wave and heard stories, like from Silvia whose parents had been killed last time. She hadn't seen one herself and Missy claimed she hadn't either, but Kristen knew what was staring at her. Oh sure it looked like a human... sort of. If not for the scales that were coating its body and the sharp fangs that glittered as it smiled at her, a black forked tongue slipping out to lick at lips that were some strange shade of blue. "Hello little girl." The voice was strange and Kristen didn't like it yet she knew it was female. Demons could be female? At least that explained the scaley breasts, not that Kristen actually cared. Her mouth had gone dry and even though she tried she couldn't make herself scream, legs frozen as the thing came closer to her. Mitzi was barking like crazy though, struggling to get loose from Kristen's locked arms. "You look absolutely delicious."
Kristen just stared as it neared, only halfway across the yard... now one-quarter. Her pale blue eyes were huge as she finally managed to take a slow step back, fearful tears clouding her vision. "Missy," it was a whimper that slipped out somehow, the plead for her big sister. Who wasn't even home. Her arms loosened and Mitzi slipped free, barking as she ran into the house. Some dog. "Go... go away." Kristen took another step back, stopping again when the demon chuckled at her. Someone swore behind her and she heard the sound of something shattering and quick footsteps, but no one came out for her. A shadow of fear fell on her, arms wrapping around her small torso.
"I'll go," the demon said in that strange voice, taking another few steps so that there wasn't even five feet left between them. Kristen could jump that distance easy. "Soon as I see just how delicious the children of this part of the world tastes." Taste? The word seemed to coil around Kristen's heart and she found her full voice and screamed at the top of her lungs.
Missy was just ready to go home, change and go out patrolling. Only not for vampires this time, not even the one whose head she was supposed to be bringing back to Trigger for a pretty little paycheck. No, there were demons on the loose - she had just covered a grisly story about a man drowned in his own toilet by own - and she wanted to take care of a few. But only after she changed and made sure, most importantly, that Kristen was alright. It pained her that this had to happen on her kid sister's birthday or all days and every time she placed a call to cancel the party she had felt a little tiny jab. Poor girl getting the shaft because of some maniacs out in Ireland. Shaking her head, Missy glanced down at her cell as it went off. Home number. "Yeah?" she asked after hitting the speaker button. "I'm almost home, just turned onto-" Her voice cut off as she listened to the baby-sitter, a reliable girl by the name of Anna, rattling off like someone gone mad about a scaled woman in the backyard talking to Kristen. "Get her in the house!" Hitting the end button, Missy tore the rest of the way down the street, ignoring the posted speed limits and whipped into the driveway.
Gun, she reminded herself, reaching into the glovebox to pull out a personal favorite, not even bothering to try hiding it. There were demons on the loose, who was going to notice that sort of thing? Reaching the door she was, sadly, not surprised to see Anna tearing right off past her. Where was Kristen? "Kristen!" Missy shouted as she ran into the house, right at the same moment that an ear-rending scream came. From the backyard. Heart dropping, Missy ran to the sliding glass door and stopped. Female demon covered in scales with snake fangs and a snake tongue... her mind whirled but gave her nothing, her knowledge of demons nowhere near as extensive as her vampire lore. "Kristen," she said it quietly, eyes on the demon who was mere feet from her little sister. Kristen, the last member of her family, just turned ten. "Kris, I'm here. Come on towards me, little shiela..." As she spoke, Missy stepped forward. It was almost like the demon did not even see her it was so focused on Kristen. Her gun came up, hands steady as she pointed at the thing's head. Was one bullet enough to kill a demon? Have to destroy the whole brain, tear it apart. Maybe five bullets since her shotgun was upstairs and she could not just leave Kristen there, just like she could not take a shot yet. Not with Kristen so close to it.
The demon did notice the arrival of an adult, but she didn't care. Just an adult and it had yet to harm her so there was nothing to be concerned about. Her path to the child was still clear, the grin still on her face as she stepped again and reached out, one scaled hand closing over the girl's shoulder. "Now don't worry," she assured as her other arm came up to touch Kristen's smooth cheek. "This is going to hurt terribly but I'll love every minute of it."
Missy was there! Kristen wanted to turn and look at her but her eyes were caught on the demon that was touching her, keeping her rooted to that spot so that she couldn't run either. Kristen tried to pull away but there wasn't a chance she was going to be able to get away from her. She was just a little girl and didn't have the strength for that sort of thing. "Missy," Kristen managed to say, the tears starting to fall now. Her shoulder was starting to hurt as the demon gave a squeeze and she felt her t-shirt tearing underneath of its claws. "Missy I don't want it to hurt me." She didn't want it to hurt her either, was this what I dreamed about?, but seriously she was just a kid. What else was she going to say?
"I'm just going to say it once," Missy said, flicking the safety off. She could see the bright red spots of blood on Kristen's shoulder. Her little sister was being hurt and what was she doing about it? Trying to negotiate witha demon? That was insane! Beyond insane, it was something that simply should not be done. Had to be worse than negotiating with a vampire because at that moment Missy knew she would have befriended one of the bloodsuckers if they could get Kristen away. Strength-wise she had nothing on a demon. It would tear her apart and Kristen would be left just as vulnerable as she was now. "Let go of my sister or I'm going to blow your brains out."
The demon laughed, the sound grating on Missy's nerves and making her teeth grit. "No I don't think so. I'm hungry and she's just about the right age for me. You're far too old so why don't you just go away so I don't have to kill you too?" Like the demon was afraid of the gun in teh hands of this skinny blonde. What sort of threat was she?
"Missy," Kristen whimpered again, her shoulder burning. She was struggling against the hold on her shoulder, trying to break free because something told her that if she could just get behind Missy then everything would be fine. She'd be safe and Missy would take care of this thing that was trying to eat her. Eat me, the thought repeated over in Kristen's head even though she didn't want it to. Her legs were starting to buckle, a sick feeling washing through her and then it was too much, Kristen just slumped right to the ground, feeling her shoulder burn worse as it slipped free and she crumbled into a little heap on the ground. Everything sounded blurred and distant, her heart beating loudly in her ears as she tried to just breathe, knowing that she was mere steps away from being that thing's meal. "...mom..."
No more thoughts went through Missy's head when she saw Kristen crumble down out of the demon's grasp. Good girl, she thought as she squeezed off the first shot. Never had blood looked so beautiful to her as when it sprayed out the back of that demon's head and then there was another gout as she fired again. Regular bullets, nothing holy or any of that - though maybe I need to think about looking into those now - and she had exactly eight of them. The demon was making a terrible noise and coming towards her but Missy did not care because that meant at least it was not focusing on Kristen anymore. Then a hand was on her neck and Missy choked, feeling as it squeezed harder than anything had. But she had a closer range and her gun came up, barrel pressing into the things chin before she pulled the trigger again. And she felt the grip weaken and then falter, the thing sliding onto the ground with Missy right after it, gagging as she tried to breathe again. Little specks were swimming in her vision from the lack of it for those moments.
There was gunfire. Someone was shooting and Kristen curled in on herself as she heard noises that seemed to come right out of her nightmares. Her hands came up to clamp over her ears as she tried to close everything out. Then something fell right in front of her and she scooted back when she felt the scales and... was that blood? Her fingers shook as she touched the blood that had dripped into her hair and she let out another little scream when she saw that Missy was on the ground too. "Missy?!" the little blonde crawled over and started to shake her sister. There was blood on her too and angry marks all over her neck. "Missy!!"
"Just a sec, Kris," Missy rasped when she felt her sister shaking her. Now that the demon was dead and she knew that Kristen was alright she could afford to lay there for a second and get her breath back, rearrange her spinning thoughts. It was absolutely terrifying to know that something like that had just come into her yard and tried to kill her sister. To know that if she had not come home when she did then Kristen would have been... now her throat was clogged as her tears burned and Missy sat up, turning to pull Kristen into a tight hug. "Don't worry, I'm okay. Come on, let's get that shoulder washed." Nothing she could do for her neck except swab at where the things claws had nicked. No cure for a bruised neck.
Kristen clung to her sister like the koala her father had nicknamed her for, refusing to let go. The fear had not fled even though the thing that'd hurt her was dead. "It wanted to eat me," Kristen whispered as they went inside, turning to offer her arm as Missy got the first-aid kit. "Missy I didn't know the demons were back. I wouldn't have gone outside if I knew, I swear!"
"Anna should have been watching you," Missy said, eyes narrowed as she dabbed at the punctures. No need for stitches but definitely the peroxide, which she applied liberally before wrapping her little sister's shoulder up tight. There was not a whole lot left for her to say and her mind was going through all of the places where she could take Kristen. One of the churches would be good, demons never went in those and plenty of people were there. Or the high school... but the last thing Missy wanted to do was leave her sister alone with a bunch of people. Maybe someone she knew would be there, maybe someone would not. Who knew? And what sort of person left a kid on their own when they had just been subjected to a demon attack? Hell, Missy would have gone straight into trauma if she was Kristen's age and left alone after that. "Alright, here's what we're going to do. It's your birthday and so you can have a little sleepover with someone... someone safe." There were very few people she would trust Kristen with in this sort of situation and she imagined that all of them would be seeking some sort of shelter. Thank god for cell phones. "Do you maybe want to go with Linnea and her kids?"
Kristen tried not to cry when Missy used the peroxide but tears still slipped out. She sniffled when Missy started talking about what they were going to do. "I want to be with you," Kristen told her. What sort of birthday was this? Demons and attacks and her sister was just going to leave her? "Not Linnea! Satu doesn't like me, I don't want to go there. Why can't we stay together?" That sick feeling was still in her stomach which meant that Missy was still going to do something dangerous. She didn't like that at all. "I don't want you to go."
"I have to." Both for her job and because there was no way Missy could let demons like that have free reign of Scarlet Oak. The thought had come to her when she was busy shooting and she realized that it was true - even vampires were not so bad. Vampires. Vampires are just as strong, aren't they? Something about Heme... hell no, not taking her there. But there it was, an idea clear as day and Missy very nearly groaned at herself for thinking of it. "You can't come with me, Kris, I've got things to do... but how about if I take you to see Nikita?" Worth a shot if Kristen would go along with it and the vampire was at home. Vampire definitely had enough weapons to keep safe during a demon attack and she would never hurt a child. If anything she seemed to adore Kristen and Missy could use that if it meant she would be safe. She still thought Linnea would work perfectly fine, but the last thing she needed was for Kristen to pitch a fit and try running away. Not with all of this going on.
"You were - Nikita?" Kristen's thoughts went away from the demon for a minute and the fact that Missy had a gun. She'd just put that together, that shooting and a dead demon meant Missy had been shooting which meant she had a gun, but it flitted off because Missy'd suggested her going to see Nikita. Kristen adored the short-haired woman and if she couldn't be with Missy that'd be a close second. "Can't you stay with me?" She bit her lip, eyes huge and teary when she looked at Missy. "I don't want you to get hurt."
God she was not making this easy. "I'll come back for you don't worry," Missy promised with her brightest smile, even ruffling Kristen's hair. "But hey, you go and get some things in a bag for you and then some food for Mitzi." I'll be damned if a vampire has food for a dog at her house. "Then come back down and we'll... go see Nikita." God damnit mom and dad would roll over in their graves if they knew that I was about to hand Kristen over to a vampire for safe keeping! When Kristen ran off to do that, Missy allowed her nerves to take over and leaned into the sink, emptying out the little that she had eaten that day before washing the mess off her face and hair. A little more focused now, she turned to put together a few things for Kristen to eat. Maybe Nikita would not be home and she could still make Linnea work.
Maybe one thing would go right today.
