Don't play with fire unless you're us.
Who: Neil and Bren
Where: abandoned parking lot
When: 6:30pm
The parking lot was just as desolate as before, jammed on the edge of town where a thick patch of trees met the hard verge of broken asphalt. Abri was sitting atop the roof of Neil’s car watching him unload firewood, candles and other flammable objects from the back of his Pontiac. He’d ditched the rental at long last, drove back to the old Self Storage garage back in his hometown just East of Detroit and reclaimed the old 1970 GTO from where he’d regretfully left it before leaving the country. He’d stolen and had that car repainted when he was eighteen. His first real crime and his first car. (Fond memories.) Like a lot of things, it felt exactly as it had when he was in his twenties, welcomed him back like it had been waiting for his hands on the wheel again.
Abri was lees impressed. It smells like old food receptacles and dust. She paused. And other things.
Neil banged his head against the top of the trunk.
So you’re mentoring errant fire-starters now? continued Abri while her charge clutched his head. As if fleeing a crime ring, reuniting with an old love, and a slightly feral vampire were not enough trouble you would insist on this as well? It’s small wonder you are such an accomplished thief, your time management skills are astounding in that you jam every minute of every day with your ambitions. Her tone while talking about his personal character was the same as when she was talking about the weird odors of his car.
Neil slammed the truck closed and pointed at the little gold and black monkey. “First of all,” he snapped, “Seer is not ‘feral.’ Second of all, be nice to Bren and Bogart. She’s a good kid and no elemental deserves to struggle if they don’t have to. You should know.” He checked his watch and took a seat on the tailgate. “She should be here soon.” Abri hopped on his shoulder, smacking his inconsiderately with her tail. “Be nice.”
